Vessel-based observations of water column structure and flow near a shallow-crested seamount are used to quantify the physical disturbance induced by that seamount. The implications of this disturbance on the ‘feeding hole’ hypothesis are then examined based on data from moored thermistors and acoustic current profilers, as well as vessel-based acoustic sounding-derived biomass estimates, currents, and conductivity-temperature-depth profiles from a 55 km square grid of stations around the crest. Mean currents in the region of 0.2 m s?1 are comparable to observations from surface drifters whereas the semidiurnal tidal flow amplitude was one third of this. Thorpe Scale-based estimates of energy dissipation rate were in the range 10?9 to 2.10?8 W kg?1 and vertical diffusivities Kz were in the range 10?4 to 10?3 m2 s?1. Turbulence levels were higher upstream of the seamount–likely due to the influence of nearby seamounts Rumble IV and V. There was no evidence of a Taylor Cap in the Rumble III velocity field. The sounder data provide some evidence of a feeding hole and analysis based on diffusivities suggests that this might persist downstream of the seamount for as much as 7 days.  相似文献

Neutron stars may experience differential rotation on short, dynamical timescales following extreme astrophysical events like binary neutron star mergers. In this work, the masses and radii of differentially rotating neutron star models are computed. We employ a set of equations of states for dense hypernuclear and Δ $$ \Delta $$ -admixed-hypernuclear matter obtained within the framework of CDF theory in the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approximation. Results are shown for varying meson- Δ $$ \Delta $$ couplings, or equivalently the Δ $$ \Delta $$ -potential in nuclear matter. A comparison of our results with those obtained for nonrotating stars shows that the maximum mass difference between differentially rotating and static stars is independent of the underlying particle composition of the star. We further find that the decrease in the radii and increase in the maximum masses of stellar models when Δ $$ \Delta $$ -isobars are added to hyperonuclear matter (as initially observed for static and uniformly rotating stars) persist also in the case of differentially rotating neutron stars.  相似文献

The Ulysses Unified Radio and Plasma (URAP) experiment has detected a new component of Jupiter's radio spectrum in the frequency range from about 10 to 30 kHz. This component is emitted in the magnetoionic ordinary mode from a localized corotating source in the northern polar region. The source is centered at system III longitude 208°, near the meridian containing the North magnetic dipole axis, at a distance of nearly 4RJ from the planet and near the last closed field line. The emission frequency is somewhat above the electron plasma frequency in the source region, but well below the electron gyrofrequency. Accompanying this O-mode emission at lower frequencies is intense Z-mode emission, which is likely to play a significant role in the generation of the O-mode.  相似文献

 Synchrotron radiation S K-edge XANES spectra and unit-cell parameters are used to investigate the local electronic structure of non-stoichiometric binary and ternary Fe-Co-Ni monosulfide solid solution (mss; M0.923S, M = Fe, Co, Ni) quenched from 800 °C and low pressure. The prominent absorption edge feature of the XANES spectra represents transition of S 1s core level electrons to unoccupied S 3p σ* antibonding orbitals hybridized with empty metal 3d(eg) orbitals. There is a progressive increase in area of the edge peak from Fe0.923S to Ni0.923S and Co0.923S, which correlates with progressive decrease in c and a parameters for the NiAs-type subcell and increase in metallic character, and reflects increase in the number and availability of empty eg β orbitals and covalence of metal-S bonds. More generally, the area of the edge peak exhibits an inverse linear correlation with a, c and unit-cell volume of binary and ternary mss. This inverse linear correlation is attributed to progressive increase in covalence and M-S-M bonding interaction in the c-axis direction, through metal-S [M 3d(eg) - S 3p (or 3d)] π bonding. However, the area of the edge peak does not correlate very well with the average number of 3d electrons per metal atom in these solid solutions, showing that the absorption of synchrotron radiation reflects the local electronic structure of individual absorber atoms (i.e. the SM6 cluster), and is not a group (crystal energy band) effect. A feasibility study of an earthquake early warning (EEW) system was conducted for the Eastern Caribbean region using scenario earthquakes, corresponding to the maximum credible earthquakes and to the earthquakes associated with a return period of 475 years. Broadband synthetic seismograms were produced at selected critical facilities, where there is potential interest in the installation of an EEW system. The expected damage was derived from the synthetic seismograms and compared with the lead-time determined for both a regional and on-site EEW configuration. Next, the Virtual Seismologist EEW algorithm, as included in SeisComP3, was tested. Additional broadband synthetic seismograms were produced for the stations in the Eastern Caribbean seismic networks in order to simulate the real time behaviour of the seismic networks during the occurrence of the synthetic earthquakes and to assess the predictive capacity of the selected ground motion prediction equation. Expected peak ground parameters and lead-times at the critical facilities constitute the major outcome of the study.  相似文献

We report the detection of a stable super-orbital period in the high-mass X-ray binary 2S 0114+650. Analyses of data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All-Sky Monitor from 1996 January 5 to 2004 August 25 reveal a super-orbital period of 30.7±0.1 d, in addition to confirming the previously reported neutron star spin period of 2.7 h and the binary orbital period of 11.6 d. It is unclear if the super-orbital period can be ascribed to the precession of a warped accretion disc in the system.  相似文献

Olfactory-based mechanisms have been hypothesized for biological behaviors including foraging, mate-seeking, homing, and host-seeking. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) capable of such chemical plume tracing feats would have applicability in searching for environmentally interesting phenomena, unexploded ordinance, undersea wreckage, and sources of hazardous chemicals or pollutants. This article presents an approach and experimental results using a REMUS AUV to find a chemical plume, trace the chemical plume to its source, and maneuver to reliably declare the source location. The experimental results are performed using a plume of Rhodamine dye developed in a turbulent, near-shore, oceanic fluid flow.  相似文献

Due to constraints both at the sensor and on the ground, dimension reduction is a common preprocessing step performed on many hyperspectral imaging datasets. However, this transformation is not necessarily done with the ultimate data exploitation task in mind-for example, target detection or ground cover classification. Indeed, theoretically speaking it is possible that a lossy operation such as dimension reduction might have a negative impact on detection performance. This notion is investigated experimentally using real-world hyperspectral imaging data. The popular principal components transform [aka. principal components analysis (PCA)] is used to explore the impact that dimension reduction has on adaptive detection of difficult targets in both the reflective and emissive regimes. Using seven state-of-the-art algorithms, it is shown that in many cases PCA can have a minimal impact on the detection statistic value for a target that is spectrally similar to the background against which it is sought.  相似文献
