The Remote Sensing Core Curriculum (RSCC) was initiated in 1993 to meet the demands for a college-level set of resources to enhance the quality of education across national and international campuses. The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing adopted the RSCC in 1996 to sustain support of this educational initiative for its membership and collegiate community. A series of volumes, containing lectures, exercises, and data, is being created by expert contributors to address the different technical fields of remote sensing. The RSCC program is designed to operate on the Internet taking full advantage of the World Wide Web (WWW) technology for distance learning. The issues of curriculum development related to the educational setting, with demands on faculty, students, and facilities, is considered to understand the new paradigms for WW-influenced computer-aided learning. The WWW is shown to be especially appropriate for facilitating remote sensing education with requirements for addressing image data sets and multimedia learning tools. ABSTRACTData on global population distribution are a strategic resource currently in high demand in an age of new Development Agendas that call for universal inclusiveness of people. However, quality, detail, and age of census data varies significantly by country and suffers from shortcomings that propagate to derived population grids and their applications. In this work, the improved capabilities of recent remote sensing-derived global settlement data to detect and mitigate major discrepancies with census data is explored. Open layers mapping built-up presence were used to revise census units deemed as ‘unpopulated’ and to harmonize population distribution along coastlines. Automated procedures to detect and mitigate these anomalies, while minimizing changes to census geometry, preserving the regional distribution of population, and the overall counts were developed, tested, and applied. The two procedures employed for the detection of deficiencies in global census data obtained high rates of true positives, after verification and validation. Results also show that the targeted anomalies were significantly mitigated and are encouraging for further uses of free and open geospatial data derived from remote sensing in complementing and improving conventional sources of fundamental population statistics. 相似文献

We have inferred the temperature sensitivity of Dorne Margolin choke ring antennas by direct estimation from differential
clock estimates for two GPS sites separated by 2400 km. At each site, the cable and receiver systems are very well isolated
from environmental variations. By direct comparison of the observed clock variations between these sites with local temperature
measurements, empirical temperature coefficients for each system have been estimated. These thermal coefficients most likely
apply to the only uncontrolled components of the systems, the Dorne Margolin choke ring antennas. Based on these results,
the short-term (diurnal) stability of the antennas appears to be better than 2 ps/°C. The possibility that longer-term effects
exist due to sensitivity in the daily average of the pseudorange observations has not been tested and cannot be excluded.

The NMEA GGA standard for global positioning system (GPS) and GLONASS receiver interfaces provides smooth data transfer from
receiver to computer for postprocessing. Specifically, the NMEA GGA specifies that the orthometric height and the undulation
be listed in addition to other quantities. The Ashtech manual (Ashtech, 1997; p. 104), however, specifies that the respective
field in the NMEA GGA message contains the ellipsoidal height when outputting from Ashtech's GG24 receiver. Because such an
inconsistency between the official NMEA GGA specifications and the implementation by a manufacturer can potentially confuse
the user, we carried out a numerical test to confirm Ashtech's implentation. The result indicates that Ashtech indeed gives
the ellipsoidal height in the fielt that should actually contain the orthometric height according to the NMEA GGA specifications.

A model for adjustment of differential gravity measurements with simultaneous gravimeter calibration
A mathematical model is proposed for adjustment of differential or relative gravity measurements, involving simultaneously
instrumental readings, coefficients of the calibration function, and gravity values of selected base stations. Tests were
performed with LaCoste and Romberg model G gravimeter measurements for a set of base stations located along a north–south
line with 1750 mGal gravity range. This line was linked to nine control stations, where absolute gravity values had been determined
by the free-fall method, with an accuracy better than 10 μGal. The model shows good consistence and stability. Results show
the possibility of improving the calibration functions of gravimeters, as well as a better estimation of the gravity values,
due to the flexibility admitted to the values of the calibration coefficients.
