The need to investigate the level of seismic pounding risk of buildings is apparent in future building code calibrations. In order to provide further insight into the pounding risk of adjacent buildings, this study develops a numerical simulation approach to estimate the seismic pounding risk of adjacent buildings separated by a minimum code‐specified separation distance during a certain period of time. It has been demonstrated that the period ratio of adjacent buildings is an important parameter that affects the pounding risk of adjacent buildings. However, there is no specific consideration for the period ratio in the related seismic pounding provisions of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Results also reveal that, for two adjacent buildings, the probability distribution of required distance to avoid seismic pounding fits very well with the type I extreme value distribution. Building a model to rapidly simulate the impact of typhoons on agriculture and to predict agricultural losses is crucial and great help for remedial measure and distributing subvention right after the disaster. The relationship between typhoon-related meteorological factors and agricultural losses was first evaluated, and the Pearson??s test was applied to find consequences of both landfall and non-landfall which can be appropriately used to synthesize the possible coverage to suitably describe how typhoons influence agricultural losses. The self-organizing feature map (SOM) was then used to map similar properties of data into the same cluster and display the distribution of input?Coutput patterns. Then, the clusters were adopted as centroids of radial basis function (RBF) neural networks. Finally, two hybrid self-organizing radial basis (SORB) networks that integrated SOM into RBF were constructed for predicting the event-based agricultural losses by feeding two different meteorological inputs (scenarios 1 and 2). The results indicate that the constructed SORB network has great ability to capture the relationship between meteorological characteristics and agricultural losses. Previously, it always takes several days to investigate and evaluate the agricultural damages after typhoons, which is a time-consuming process. In this study, the proposed agri-economic model also demonstrates its outstanding predictability, in real-time, and therefore effectively accelerates the official decision making on agricultural compensation after a typhoon strike. 相似文献

Exact analytical solutions are derived for simple elastic structures vibrating in water. Linear acoustic and beam theories are used to treat several cases some of which have been studied by more approximate methods before. A hybrid element method which is based on a localized variational principle is demonstrated numerically for a beam-dam; its theoretical bases is then generalized for arbitrary two-dimensional elastic structure. It is clear that base isolation is a sensible strategic design in attenuating the responses of a structural system induced by ground motions. The design of seismically isolated structures is mainly governed by the Uniform Building Code (UBC) published by the International Conference of Building Officials. The UBC code emphasizes a simple, statically equivalent design method that displacements of an isolated structure are concentrated at the isolation level. Therefore, the superstructure nearly moves as a rigid body and the design forces of elements above isolators are based on the behaviour of isolators at the design displacement. However, in the UBC code, the distribution of inertial (or lateral) forces over the height of the superstructure above isolation has been found to be too conservative for most isolated structures. In view of this, two simple and reasonable design formulae for the lateral force distribution on isolated structures have been proposed in this paper. Results obtained from a full‐scale isolated structure tested on the shaking table and numerical analyses of two additional examples verify the suitability of design formulae. Extratropical North Atlantic cooling has been tied to droughts over the Sahel in both paleoclimate observations and modeling studies. This study, which uses an atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) coupled to a slab ocean model that simulates this connection, explores the hypothesis that the extratropical North Atlantic cooling causes the Sahel droughts via an atmospheric teleconnection mediated by tropospheric cooling. The drying is also produced in a regional climate model simulation of the Sahel when reductions in air temperature (and associated geopotential height and humidity changes) from the GCM simulation are imposed as the lateral boundary conditions. This latter simulation explicitly demonstrates the central role of tropospheric cooling in mediating the atmospheric teleconnection from extratropical North Atlantic cooling. Diagnostic analyses are applied to the GCM simulation to infer teleconnection mechanisms. An analysis of top of atmosphere radiative flux changes diagnosed with a radiative kernel technique shows that extratropical North Atlantic cooling is augmented by a positive low cloud feedback and advected downstream, cooling Europe and North Africa. The cooling over North Africa is further amplified by a reduced greenhouse effect from decreased atmospheric specific humidity. A moisture budget analysis shows that the direct moisture effect and monsoon weakening, both tied to the ambient cooling and resulting circulation changes, and feedbacks by vertical circulation and evaporation augment the rainfall reduction. Cooling over the Tropical North Atlantic in response to the prescribed extratropical cooling also augments the Sahel drying. Taken together, they suggest a thermodynamic pathway for the teleconnection. The teleconnection may also be applicable to understanding the North Atlantic influence on Sahel rainfall over the twentieth century. 相似文献
