Estimating the impact of anthropogenic sound on marine animals entails consideration of animal location in the vertical and horizontal planes and the behavior of the animal (e.g., breeding, foraging, migration) at the time of sound exposure. To approach more realistic impact estimates, the effects of sound on the marine environment (ESME) model incorporates a simulation program that permits fine-scale control over simulated marine animal (animat) movement and behavior. The simulation program, known as the Marine Mammal Movement and Behavior (3MB) module, provides user control over animats that is scaleable to available information about the species of concern. Movement and behavior is stochastically determined by sampling from distributions describing rates of movement in the horizontal and vertical planes, direction of travel, time at the surface between dives, time at depth, and time in and transition between behavioral states. Influence of behavior over each of the other distributions is permitted. As knowledge of marine animal behavior, movement, and ecology increases, the flexibility and level of control provided by such models will increase the potential for realistic impact estimates.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the development of India's mining industry, its present status and future outlook. Despite its growth, the contribution of India's mining industry to GDP has remained relatively stable since 1970. At present the nation is a leading world producer of 11 major mineral and energy commodities, including bauxite, chromite, coal, iron ore and manganese. Recent economic reforms have stimulated industrial expansion in India; however, problems, including a restricted private sector role in resource development and ineffective government mineral strategies, may limit future growth in output. Capital investment levels in India's mining industry are examined in the paper to assess possible long-term expansion levels.  相似文献

Measurements of micrometeorological variables were made for a complete annual cycle using an automatic weather station and two energy budget–Bowen ratio systems at a field site adjacent to the Santa Cruz River in southern Arizona. These data were used to provide the basis of an estimate of the evaporation from a one-mile long losing reach of a riparian corridor in this semi-arid environment. A remotely sensed map of vegetation cover was used to stratify the corridor into five categories of surface cover. The total evaporation was calculated as the area-weighted average of the measured evaporation for sampled areas of the two most common covers, and appropriate estimates of evaporation for the less common covers. Measurements showed a substantial, seasonally dependent evaporation from the taller, deep-rooted riparian cover in the study reach, while the short, sparse vegetation provided little evaporation. In terms of the volume of water evaporated from the study reach, the evaporation from irrigated agriculture accounts for almost half of the total loss, while the majority of the remaining evaporation is from the taller riparian vegetation covers, with about one-quarter of the total loss estimated as coming from obligatory phreatophytes, primarily cottonwood. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The hazard posed by a rip current depends in part on the ability of beach users to identify a rip current and to associate surf conditions with the potential for rip currents. Understanding which visual features beach users associated with rip currents is an important step in the development of appropriate programs and educational materials aimed at improving the ability of beach users to identify a rip current. A face-to-face survey (n = 392) was conducted to assess the ability of beach users to identify a rip current using five near eye-level photographs that simulate the view of the beach and surf zone as the respondent approached the beach. The survey was conducted on three heavily used public beaches in Texas (Galveston, Port Aransas, and Corpus Christi) at the height of the summer beach season in 2012. Only 13 % of respondents correctly selected the photograph showing the most hazardous conditions and correctly identified the precise location of the rip current on the photograph. The majority of beach users (87 %) incorrectly indicated that the photograph with the heaviest surf represented the most hazardous surf conditions and greatest potential for the development of rip currents, or failed to identify rip currents in photographs. Respondents who were able to correctly identify the rip current tended to recognize the breaking wave pattern, areas of darker water, or the proximity to structures as key visual characteristics of rip currents and also had higher self-reported abilities to swim in rough water and escape a rip current.  相似文献

The entrainment and subsequent transport of PM10 (particulate matter <10 µm) has become an important and challenging focus of research for both scientific and practical applications. Arid and semi‐arid environments are important sources for the atmospheric loading of PM10, although the emission of this material is often limited by surface crusts. It has been suggested that the primary mechanisms through which PM10 is released from a crusted surface are abrasion by saltating grains or disturbance by agricultural and recreational activities. To examine the importance of saltation abrasion in the emission of PM10, a series of field wind tunnel tests were conducted on a clay‐crusted surface near Desert Wells, Arizona. In a previous part of this study it was found that the emission rate varies linearly with the saltation transport rate, although there can be considerable variation in this relationship. This paper more closely examines the source of the variability in the abrasion efficiency, the amount of PM10 emitted by a given quantity of saltating grains. The abrasion efficiency was found to vary with the susceptibility of the surface to abrasion, the ability of the sand to abrade that surface and the availability of material with a caliper size <10 µm within the crust. Specifically, the results of the study show that the abrasion efficiency is related to the crust strength, the amount of surface disturbance and the velocity of the saltating grains. It is concluded that the spatial and temporal variability of these controls on the abrasion efficiency imposes severe contextual limitations on experimentally derived models, and can make theoretical models too complex and impractical to be of use. Despite their crystallographic differences, the mechanisms of the α-β phase transitions in the cristobalite phases of SiO2 and AlPO4 are very similar. The β→α transition in AlPO4 cristobalite is from cubic ( $\left( {F\bar 43m} \right)$ ) to orthorhombic (C2221), whereas that in SiO2 cristobalite is from cubic ( $\left( {Fd\bar 3m} \right)$ ) to tetragonal (P43212 or P41212). These crystallographic differences stem from the fact that there are two distinct cation positions in AlPO4 cristobalite as opposed to one in SiO2 cristobalite and the ordered (Al,P) distribution is retained through the phase transition. As a result, there are significant differences in their crystal structures, domain configurations resulting from the phase transition and Landau free energy expressions. A symmetry analysis of the “improper ferroelastic” transition from $F\bar 43m \to C222_1$ in AlPO4 cristobalite has been carried out based on the Landau formalism and the projection operator methods. The six-component order parameter, η driving the phase transition transforms as the X5 representation of $F\bar 43m$ and corresponds to the simultaneous translation and rotation of the [AlO4] and [PO4] tetrahedra coupled along 110. The Landau free energy expression contains a third order invariant, the minimization of which requires a first-order transition, consistent with experimental results. The tetrahedral configurations of twelve α phase domains resulting from the β→α transition in AlPO4 cristobalite are of two types: (1) transformation twins from a loss of the 3-fold axis, and (2) antiphase domains from the loss of the translation vectors 1/2[101] and 1/2[011] (FC). In contrast to α-SiO2 cristobalite, the α-AlPO4 cristobalite (C2221) does not have chiral elements (43, 41) and hence, enantiomorphous domains are absent. These transformation domains are essentially macroscopic and static in the α phase and microscopic and dynamic in the β phase. The order parameter, η couples with the strain components, which initiates the structural fluctuations causing the domain configurations to dynamically interchange in the β phase. An analysis of the MAS NMR data (29Si, 17O, 27Al) on the α α-β transitions in SiO2 and AlPO4 cristobalites (Spearing et al. 1992, Phillips et al. 1993) essentially confirms the dynamical model proposed earlier for SiO2 cristobalite (Hatch and Ghose 1991) and yields a detailed picture of the transition dynamics. In both cases, small atomic clusters with the configuration of the low temperature α phase persist considerably above the transition temperature, T0. The NMR data on the β phases above T0 cannot be explained by a softening of the tetrahedral rotational and translational modes alone, but require the onset of an order-disorder mechanism resulting in a dynamic averaging due to rapidly changing domain configurations considerably below T0.  相似文献

The recovery of Santa Rosa Island in northwest Florida is characterized following Hurricane Katrina (September 2005), which was preceded by Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Dennis (2005). Beach and dune recovery were quantified to the east and west of Pensacola Beach through a comparison of LiDAR data collected immediately following Hurricane Katrina and in July 2006 after almost a year of recovery. East of Pensacola Beach (the Santa Rosa Unit), the shoreline retreated by an average of 64 m during the 2004–2005 hurricane season and recovered by an average of 19 m. To the west of Pensacola Beach (the Fort Pickens Unit), the shoreline retreated by an average of 30 m, and while no significant shoreface recovery was observed, the presence of vegetation on low‐profile dunes promoted backshore accretion. It is found that beachface recovery in the Santa Rosa Unit and backshore accretion in the Fort Pickens Unit occurred at the widest sections of the island where the pre‐storm profile volume had been relatively large and overwash penetration was at a minimum. The narrow sections of the island (between cuspate headlands) had a smaller profile volume before the storms, leading to greater overwash penetration and in some cases island breaching in both sections, which limited the volume of sediment available for shoreface recovery. The alongshore variation in recovery is not only related to the island width, but also the offshore bathymetry, height of the pre‐storm dunes and the overwash penetration. If sufficient time is allowed for the return of vegetation and the recovery of the dunes, the variations in storm impact observed during Hurricane Ivan will be reinforced during subsequent storms. In this respect, the level of impact during subsequent storms and the ability of the island to recover will depend on the frequency of storm events. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An order parameter treatment of the phase transitions in leucite, KAlSi2O6, at approximately 950 and 920 K: (cubic) I41 acd(tetragonal) I41 a(tetragonal) is presented in terms of Landau theory and induced representation theory. The Al-Si order with decreasing temperature is taken as the primary order parameter to which other distortions (K+ ion displacements, strain components, etc.) couple linearly. The expected Al-Si ordering behavior and the associated K+ ion displacements for both transitions are derived and the resulting twin domain orientations are listed. The sequence of phase transitions results from a coupling of 3 + and 4 + representations. The Landau free energy for the five-dimensional reducible representation has been simplified to two components resulting in a linearquadratic coupling of the components. Possible phase diagrams are derived by free energy minimization. The cubic tetragonal transition is first-order, whereas the tetragonal-tetragonal transition may be second order. A tricritical point exists at which the first-order transition changes to second-order.  相似文献
