Elemental and Sr, Nd, Hf and high precision Pb isotopic data are presented from 59 low-Ti and high-Ti lavas from the syn-break up part of the Faroe Flood Basalt Province. The depleted MORB-like low-Ti lavas erupted in the rift zone between the Faroe Islands and central East Greenland around the time of break up of the North Atlantic have isotopic end-member compositions different from the depleted Iceland lavas. We suggest that the main low-Ti mantle component is NAEM (North Atlantic End-Member (Ellam and Stuart, 2000, J. Petrol. 41, 919) and that the 207Pb/204Pb value of the component should be 15.35 and εHf = + 16.5. NAEM is the main depleted component in the early Iceland plume. This is supported by high mantle potential temperatures (up to 1550 °C) calculated for the source of the low-Ti basalts. The unique mantle isotopic composition of NAEM with low 206Pb/204Pb (17.5) and Δ7/4Pb (? 3.8) precludes a derivation from recycled MORB lithosphere. Instead we suggest that NAEM represents a plume component of recycled depleted Archean lithospheric mantle that was further depleted ~ 500 Ma ago, possibly in connection with the recycling process. Two other isotopic end-members are required to explain the variation of the Faroe low-Ti basalts: (1) The Faroe depleted component (FDC), with 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7025, εNd = + 11, εHf = + 19.5, 206Pb/204Pb = 18.2, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.454 and 208Pb/204Pb = 37.75, which is similar in composition to some Atlantic MORB and is regarded as a local upper mantle source. (2) An enriched EM-type component similar in geochemistry to the Icelandic Öræfajökull lavas. This component is believed to be recycled pelagic sediments in the plume but it can alternatively be a local crustal or lithospheric mantle component. The enriched Faroe high-Ti lavas erupted inland from the rift have isotopic compositions very similar to the enriched Icelandic neo-volcanics and these lava suites apparently share the two enriched plume end-members IE1 and IE2 (Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 68, 2, 2004). The lack of mixing between high and low-Ti melts at the time of break up, is explained by a zoned plume where only low-Ti sources were present beneath the rift zone surrounded by high-Ti sources on both sides of the rift. The enriched plume components in the high-Ti lava sequences on the Faroe Islands and central East Greenland changed rapidly on a ka-scale which implies, from geophysical modelling, that this area was positioned above the center of the plume, and that the Iceland plume was centered under the Atlantic ridge already from the Paleocene. 相似文献

Hydrocarbons such as CH4 are known to be formed through the Fischer-Tropsch or Sabatier type reactions in hydrothermal systems usually at temperatures above 100°C. Weathering of olivine is sometimes suggested to account for abiotic formation of CH4 through its redox lowering and water splitting properties. Knowledge about the CH4 and H2 formation processes at low temperatures is important for the research about the origin and cause of early Earth and Martian CH4 and for CO2 sequestration. We have conducted a series of low temperature, long-term weathering experiments in which we have tested the CH4 and H2 formation potential of forsteritic olivine.The results show low temperature CH4 production that is probably influenced by chromite and magnetite as catalysts. Extensive analyses of a potential CH4 source trapped in the crystal structure of the olivine showed no signs of incorporated CH4. Also, the available sources of organic carbon were not enough to support the total amount of CH4 detected in our experiments. There was also a linear relationship between silica release into solution and the net CH4 accumulation into the incubation bottle headspaces suggesting that CH4 formation under these conditions could be a qualitative indicator of olivine dissolution.It is likely that minerals such as magnetite, chromite and other metal-rich minerals found on the olivine surface catalyze the formation of CH4, because of the low temperature of the system. This may expand the range of environments plausible for abiotic CH4 formation both on Earth and on other terrestrial bodies. 相似文献

The Målingen structure in Sweden has for a long time been suspected to be the result of an impact; however, no hard evidence, i.e., shock metamorphic features or traces of the impactor, has so far been presented. Here we show that quartz grains displaying planar deformation features (PDFs) oriented along crystallographic planes typical for shock metamorphism are present in drill core samples from the structure. The shocked material was recovered from basement breccias, below the sediment infill, and the distribution of the orientation of the shock‐produced PDFs indicates that the studied material experienced low shock pressures. Based on our findings, we can exclude that the material is transported from the nearby Lockne impact structure, which means that the Målingen structure is a separate impact structure, the seventh confirmed impact structure in Sweden. Furthermore, sedimentological and biostratigraphic aspects of the deposits that fill the depression at Målingen are very similar to features at the Lockne impact structure. This implies a coeval formation age and thus also the confirmation of the first known marine target doublet impact craters on Earth (i.e., the Lockne–Målingen pair). 相似文献

Mosquito Creek drains a 15.5 km2 watershed on the North Shore Mountains north of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and flows through the densely urbanized District and then City of North Vancouver. Previous studies determined that the creek is subject to debris floods (hyperconcentrated flows). The National Research Council of Canada is applying multi-hazard risk assessment procedures for various regions in B.C. and chose Mosquito Creek as one of its target areas. As part of its natural hazard management plan, the District of North Vancouver (DNV) requested an assessment of debris flood hazards and associated risk to life. Using a combination of empirical methods, dendrochronology and some judgment, BGC Engineering Inc. assessed debris flood hazard extent, velocity and depth for estimated 100-, 200-, 500- and 2,500-year debris flow return periods. Based on the results from the hazard assessment, risk for individuals and groups living within the hazard area, including residential homes and a fire hall, was estimated. Compared to risk tolerance criteria accepted on an interim basis by the DNV, we estimate that societal risk exceeds tolerable standards and that individual risk exceeds tolerable standards for 10 homes. The results from the risk to loss of life study have prompted DNV to implement a series of risk reduction measures including installation of a debris containment net and watershed restoration measures. 相似文献

Hydrogen cyanide is an excellent organic reagent and is central to most of the reaction pathways leading to abiotic formation
of simple organic compounds containing nitrogen, such as amino acids, purines and pyrimidines. Reduced carbon and nitrogen
precursor compounds for the synthesis of HCN may be formed under off-axis hydrothermal conditions in oceanic lithosphere in
the presence of native Fe and Ni and are adsorbed on authigenic layer silicates and zeolites. The native metals as well as
the molecular hydrogen reducing CO2 to CO/CH4 and NO3
-/NO2
- to NH3/NH4
+ are a result of serpentinization of mafic rocks. Oceanic plates are conveyor belts of reduced carbon and nitrogen compounds
from the off-axis hydrothermal environments to the subduction zones, where compaction, dehydration, desiccation and diagenetic
reactions affect the organic precursors. CO/CH4 and NH3/NH4
+ in fluids distilled out of layer silicates and zeolites in the subducting plate at an early stage of subduction will react
upon heating and form HCN, which is then available for further organic reactions to, for instance, carbohydrates, nucleosides
or even nucleotides, under alkaline conditions in hydrated mantle rocks of the overriding plate. Convergent margins in the
initial phase of subduction must, therefore, be considered the most potent sites for prebiotic reactions on Earth. This means

Major and trace element and Sr and Nd isotope data is presented from the Andagua valley scoria cone and lava field (15°32′ S 72°19′ W), Southern Peru in the northernmost part of the Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The rocks are all quite evolved in composition (SiO2 = 55–64 wt.%) and classify as benmoreites, latites and few mugearites and trachytes. Samples are characterized by high Na2O (4.2–5.2 wt.%), Sr (600–1300 ppm), Ba (800–1600 ppm). The main difference between the benmoreites and latites is in the Na2O content that reach the highest so far reported from CVZ for these SiO2 concentrations. The rocks are generally nearly aphyric but latites and trachytes are more porphyritic. Amphibole microphenocrysts generally are only present in latites and trachytes. The difference between benmoreite and latite samples is reflected in lower P2O5 and Zr content of the latite samples documenting the existence of two compositional different parental magma types. The investigated volcanic activity spans the Pleistocene to Recent with the historic activity concentrated in the area just south of Andagua. Combined relative stratigraphy, petrography and geochemistry define volcanic units and demonstrate that rocks from Chilcayoc Grande, Chilcayoc Chico 2, Jenchana, Sucna 1 and Chilcayoc Chico 1 represent the most recent volcanic activity. The main trend samples, each form a co-magmatic group resulting in sub-parallel trends in many variations diagrams. It is furthermore shown that these trends point towards calculated mixing lines relating the individual units through a binary mixing process, thus indicating a two stage evolution. In the case of Jenchana, Sucna 1 and Chilcayoc Chico 1, the samples define positive correlation trends in the Sr vs. Rb diagram that can be extrapolated back towards origo indicating nearly perfect incompatibility of Sr and Rb. This together with generally high Sr/Y (50–105) and low Y content (< 16 ppm) suggest lack of plagioclase fractionation and residual garnet in the source and is taken as evidence for relatively high pressure (lower crustal) origin of the mixing event. The amphibole bearing samples form individual co-magmatic groups that cannot be related to each other. This means that the amphibole bearing samples originates from different magmas. The lavas of the Ninamama group are comparable in age to the main trend samples but different in petrography and composition, why the two compositional different magmas must have existed within a small confined area within a limited time span. 相似文献
