Geographic scholarship in critical toponymy has highlighted the importance of place naming as a form of discursive power within processes of urbanization. This paper builds on such literature and advances a novel theory of toponymic assemblage to interpret findings from a participatory research project in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, Canada. We foreground neighborhood history in the form of a Japanese Canadian enclave and its wartime uprooting and dispossession, and trace the historical antecedents of a resurrected toponymy of “Japantown” that has appropriated and renarrated Japanese Canadian history to facilitate further rounds of dispossession. Using a genealogical method, we highlight three “moments” of Japanese Canadian uprooting, return, presence, and activism, demonstrating how toponymies are assembled in place in heterogeneous and historically contiguous ways. This approach expands on current research in critical toponymy, offering a novel methodology for exploring the enrolment of toponymy, discourse, and materiality in the formation of place. 相似文献

The Yohkoh solar X-ray observatory carries two telescopes that require coalignment at a level better than the minimum pixel size of 2_45. This coalignment is needed both internally within Yohkoh and for many scientific applications involving data from ground-based radio and optical observatories. We describe the methods successfully developed for this purpose and now incorporated in the Yohkoh software. Soft X-ray observations of the 1993 transit of Mercury across the solar disk provided key information for the calibration of the coalignment procedures. 相似文献

Five synthetic silica glasses have been prepared for microprobe determination of trace aluminium in quartz. The glasses were synthesized from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) into which between 0 and 1431 μg g-1 aluminium had been doped. The aluminium concentrations of the glasses were independently determined by ICP-AES analysis. X-ray wavelength shift in the Al Kα peak was minimised relative to unknown quartz samples when these glasses were used for calibration. A set of these five glasses yielded a linear calibration line, and are available for trace aluminium analysis of quartz in routine microprobe systems. 相似文献

To evalute the effect of the non-uniform surface on the radiation field, the upwelling radiation at the top of the atmosphere bounded by the checkerboard type of terrain is computed using the modified doubling method. The terrain is composed of the square Lambert surfaces with two different albedoes. The dimension of the each square is assumed to be 0.5–6 km. The radiance of the terrain is discussed with respect to the atmospheric effect. The observational site is located at altitude 30 km. The corresponding projected point on the ground is located at the center of a square. The solar and observational direction is located in the plane parallel to the checkerboard squares. The atmosphere is assumed to be homogeneous, which is composed of aerosol and molecules, where the model aerosol is of the oceanic or the water soluble types.Numerical simulation exhibits the extraordinary effect near the edge of each squares. The radiance of the terrain depends upon the difference of albedoes and size of squares. It increases with the increase of the dimension of the square. It decreases with the optical thickness. At large optical thickness, the variation of radiation with zenith direction depends upon the aerosol characteristics. It shows little dependence on the solar zenith angle if less than 20°. 相似文献

In previous studies of the completeness of Rossby normal modes in a closed basin, proofs have been obtained by rather technical methods based on the Green's function for the Laplacian operator or based on the theory of compact self-adjoint operators. This short note (1) gives a much simpler proof by the use of only the norm relations between the sine functions and the Rossby normal modes and (2) clarifies the relations between the two different sets of eigenfunctions and between the ordinary norm and the Dirichlet norm, though the validity of the present method is restricted to a special one-dimensional case. The expansion theorem is also derived from the completeness theorem with the aid of transformation laws, where the assumption about the smoothness of the expanded function is weaker than in the elementary proof of Masuda (1987a). Both the set of Rossby normal modes and that of sine functions are shown to be complete for the Dirichlet norm as well. 相似文献

A numerical scheme for calculating the nonlinear energy transfer among wind waves (RIAM method) was developed on the basis of the rigorous method of Masuda. Then the performance of the RIAM method was examined by applying it to various forms of wind-wave spectra and different situations of wind-wave evolution, in comparison mainly with the WAM method. The computational time of the Masuda method was reduced by a factor of 300 by the RIAM method, which is still 2000 times slower than the WAM method simply because the RIAM method processes thousands of resonance configurations whereas the WAM method does only one. The RIAM method proves to give accurate results even for spectra of narrow band widths or bimodal spectra, whereas the WAM method often calculates an unrealistic magnitude and pattern of nonlinear energy transfer functions. In the duration-limited evolution of wind-wave spectra, the RIAM method yields a unimodal directional distribution on the low-frequency side of the spectral peak, whereas the WAM method produces a spurious bimodal one there. At higher frequencies, however, both methods give a bimodal directional distribution with two oblique maxima. The RIAM method enhances the growth of the total energy and peak period of wind waves in comparison with the WAM method. Nevertheless, Toba's constant of his 3/2-power law approaches almost the same standard value of 0.06 in both methods. For spectra of a narrow band width or for those perturbed by a small hump or depression, the RIAM method tends to recover the monotonic smoother form of spectrum whereas the WAM method often yields unrealistic humps or depressions. 相似文献

The solar neutron detector Space Environment Data Acquisition Equipment – Attached Payload (SEDA-FIB) onboard the International Space Station (ISS) detected several events from the solar direction associated with three large solar flares observed on 05 (X1.1), 07 (X5.4), and 09 (M6.3) March 2012. In this study, we focus on the interesting event of 05 March, present the temporal profiles of the neutrons, and discuss the physics that may be related to a possible acceleration scenario for ions above the solar surface. The Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) onboard Yohkoh often observed large-scale coronal loops connecting two active regions situated in opposite hemispheres. These are the trans-equatorial
loop systems (TLSs). The formation mechanism of TLSs is not yet known. We analyzed a TLS observed simultaneously with Yohkoh/SXT and a coronagraph (SOHO/LASCO-C1). SOHO/LASCO-C1 observed loop expansion and eruption at the west solar limb. Yohkoh/SXT observed a rising motion (chromospheric evaporation) of hot and dense plasmas from the active regions located at the
footpoints of the loop. Important results of our analyses are that (1) the loop eruption and the rising motion of the plasmas
were simultaneous, (2) the TLS had a cusp-like appearance, and (3) the highest temperature region of the TLS was located above
the bright loop seen in soft X rays. These observational results (loop expansion, eruption, and chromospheric evaporation)
suggest that this bright (high-density) TLS was created by the same mechanism by which a solar flare occurs, namely, magnetic
reconnection. In this paper, we propose a formation mechanism of the TLS that forms between two independent active regions. 相似文献
