The emergence and evolution of large granules shows thegranular dynamics particularly well. We therefore investigate the time dependence of the convective flows within a regular and an exploding granule. The observational material for this study was taken at the center of the solar disk with the German VTT in Izaña (Tenerife, Spain) during an observing campaign in the year 1994. It consists of series of spectrograms of high spatial resolution, which were digitized and processed with wavelet techniques. Among other features, our data show the dynamical portrait of a regular and an exploding granule. We can follow their temporal evolution over more than 12 min. Using absorption lines of different strength we are able to see the dynamical change of both granules at several heights within the first 200 km above 5000=1. The observations reveal significant changes of the convective flow of both granules over time as well as over height, which are discussed in detail.  相似文献

We select 947 star-forming galaxies from SDSS-DR7 with [O III]λ4363emission lines detected at a signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5σ. Their electron temperatures and direct oxygen abundances are then determined. We compare the results from different methods. t2, the electron temperature in the low ionization region, estimated from t3, that in the high ionization region, is compared using three analysis relations between t2- t3. These show obvious differences, which result in some different ionic oxygen abundances. The results of t3, t2, O++/H+and O+/H+derived by using methods from IRAF and literature are also compared. The ionic abundances O++/H+are higher than O+/H+for most cases. The different oxygen abundances derived from Teand the strong-line ratios show a clear discrepancy, which is more obvious following increasing stellar mass and strong-line ratio R23. The sample of galaxies from SDSS with detected [O III]λ4363 have lower metallicites and higher star formation rates, so they may not be typical representatives of the whole population of galaxies. Adopting data objects from Andrews Martini, Liang et al. and Lee et al. data, we derive new relations of stellar mass and metallicity for star-forming galaxies in a much wider stellar mass range: from 106 M to 1011 M.  相似文献

The Hubble Space Telescope /Advanced Camera for Surveys ( HST /ACS) Coma Cluster Treasury Survey is a deep two-passband imaging survey of the nearest very rich cluster of galaxies, covering a range of galaxy density environments. The imaging is complemented by a recent wide field redshift survey of the cluster conducted with Hectospec on the 6.5-m Monolithic Mirror Telescope (MMT). Among the many scientific applications for these data is the search for compact galaxies. In this paper, we present the discovery of seven compact (but quite luminous) stellar systems, ranging from M32-like galaxies down to ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs)/dwarf to globular transition objects (DGTOs).
We find that all seven compact galaxies require a two-component fit to their light profile and have measured velocity dispersions that exceed those expected for typical early-type galaxies at their luminosity. From our structural parameter analysis, we conclude that three of the samples should be classified as compact ellipticals or M32-like galaxies, and the remaining four being less extreme systems. The three compact ellipticals are all found to have old luminosity weighted ages (≳12 Gyr), intermediate metallicities  (−0.6 < [Fe/H] < −0.1)  and high [Mg/Fe] (≳0.25).
Our findings support a tidal stripping scenario as the formation mode of compact galaxies covering the luminosity range studied here. We speculate that at least two early-type morphologies may serve as the progenitor of compact galaxies in clusters.  相似文献

Syn-eruptive degassing of volcanoes may lead to syn-eruptive crystallization of groundmass phases. We have investigated this process using textural and compositional analysis of dome material from Merapi volcano, Central Java, Indonesia. Samples included dome lavas from the 1986–88, 1992–93, 1994 and 1995 effusive periods as well as pyroclastic material deposited by the November 1994 dome collapse. With total crystallinities commonly in excess of 70% (phenocrysts+microlites), the liquids present in Merapi andesites are highly evolved (rhyolitic) at the time of eruption. Feldspar microlites in dome rocks consist of plagioclase cores (Ab63An29Or8) surrounded by alkali feldspar rims (Ab53An5Or42), compositional pairs which are not in equilibrium. A change in the phase relations of the ternary feldspar system caused by degassing best explains the observed transition in feldspar composition. A small proportion of highly vesicular airfall tephra grains from the 1994 collapse have less evolved glass compositions than typical dome material and contain rimless plagioclase microlites, suggesting that the 1994 collapse event incorporated less-degassed, partially liquid magma in addition to fully solidified dome rock.As decompression drives volatile exsolution, rates of degassing and resultant microlite crystallization may be governed by magma ascent rate. Microlite crystallinity is nearly identical among the 1995 dome samples, an indication that similar microlite growth conditions (PH2O and temperature) were achieved throughout this extrusive period. However, microlite number density varied by more than a factor of four in these samples, and generally increased with distance from the vent. Low vent-ward microlite number densities and greater microlite concentrations down-flow probably reflect progressively decreasing rates of undercooling at the time of crystal nucleation during extrusion of the 1995 dome. Comparison between dome extrusion episodes indicates a correlation between lava effusion rate and microlite number density, suggesting that extrusion slowed during 1995. Crystal textures and compositions in the 1992–93 and 1994 domes share the range exhibited by the 1995 dome, suggesting that transitions in crystallization conditions (i.e., rates of undercooling determined by effusion rate) are cyclic.  相似文献
