This study demonstrates that positron emission tomography (PET) and neutron radiography (NR) techniques are complementary methods for determining the fluid pathway and porosity in crystalline rock. After preliminary injection of an organic solvent (e.g. isopropanol) front followed by the injection of the polymer solution (e.g. epoxy used for both techniques) and resin hardening, rock cutting may be performed. Flow pathway may be imaged by using a β+ emitter (e.g. 68Ga) in the resin. With a high-resolution PET camera, determination of the original water carrier features is possible in granodiorite pieces 20 cm in size and in simulated features with porosities of the order of 0.2. The use of a β+ tracer and the camera field, however, limit the lateral resolution of the technique (10 mm). Neutron radiography makes it possible to visualize the simulated porous phases by neutron transmission. The transmission process depends on the neutron scattering properties of the hydrogen-rich material (e.g. epoxy resin). Combination of 2D pictures may rebuild the 3D pattern. Lateral resolution may be in the range of 1 mm; however, the thickness of the rock sample must not exceed 10 cm. Residents of 401 mobile homes in Georgia, Mississippi, Illinois, and Oklahoma were surveyed after they heard a tornado warning.
Most residents (69%) did not seek shelter during the warning. Half of those who sought shelter went to the frame house of
a friend, neighbor, or relative, and 25% of those sought shelter in a basement or underground shelter. Some of the places
where residents sought shelter were of dubious quality, such as their own mobile home, another mobile home, or in an out-building.
Twenty-one percent of mobile home residents believed that they had a basement or underground shelter available as shelter
during a tornado warning, and about half of those said they would drive to the shelter. Residents said they would drive if
the shelter was more than 200 m away. Fifteen percent actually had a basement or underground shelter suitable as shelter within
200 m of their mobile home, but only 43% of the residents would use those shelters. The most common reason cited for not using
the shelters was that they did not know the people who lived there. Likewise, a frame house or other sturdy building was within
200 m of 58% of the mobile homes, but only 35% of the residents stated they would use those houses for shelter. Thirty-one
percent of mobile home residents had a ditch that was at least 0.5 m deep within 200 m of the mobile home. However, 44% of
these ditches had utility lines overhead, 23% had water in them, and 20% had trees overhead. The limited tornado shelter options
among mobile home residents in the United States needs to be incorporated into safety instructions so that residents without
nearby shelter are allowed to drive to safer shelter. 相似文献

The US Census provides the primary source of spatially explicit social data, but changing block boundaries complicate analyses of housing growth over time. We compared procedures for reconciling housing density data between 1990 and 2000 census block boundaries in order to assess the sensitivity of analytical methods to estimates of housing growth in Oregon. Estimates of housing growth varied substantially and were sensitive to the method of interpolation. With no processing and areal‐weighted interpolation, more than 35% of the landscape changed; 75–80% of this change was due to decline in housing density. This decline was implausible, however, because housing structures generally persist over time. Based on aggregated boundaries, 11% of the landscape changed, but only 4% experienced a decline in housing density. Nevertheless, the housing density change map was almost twice as coarse spatially as the 2000 housing density data. We also applied a dasymetric approach to redistribute 1990 housing data into 2000 census boundaries under the assumption that the distribution of housing in 2000 reflected the same distribution as in 1990. The dasymetric approach resulted in conservative change estimates at a fine resolution. All methods involved some type of trade‐off (e.g. analytical difficulty, data resolution, magnitude or bias in direction of change). However, our dasymetric procedure is a novel approach for assessing housing growth over changing census boundaries that may be particularly useful because it accounts for the uniquely persistent nature of housing over time. 相似文献

Multivariate analysis is employed to investigate the structure of variations within highly heterogeneous data. Traditionally,
principal component analysis (PCA) is run by analyzing the entire wireline log and using PCA scores to characterize variability
within and between lithologies. In this paper, we propose a technique using only specific subsets of all well records to quantify
reservoir heterogeneity due to second order lithological variability. These subsets are chosen from uniform lithofacies parts
of the wireline log in order to reduce the variability in the correlation matrix that otherwise would cause lithological changes.
The purpose is to assess the efficiency of structured PCA in analyzing small-scale heterogeneity that is captured by wireline
logs but often masked by traditional PCA approaches. This paper shows that a structured PCA procedure based upon special lithological
units is superior to an unstructured PCA, when the focus is within lithology variations. This structured procedure is applied
to data from the Heidrun field, offshore mid-Norway. The results demonstrate clear benefits from added insight into the variability
of a complex fluviodeltaic heterolithic sequence that poses great challenges to hydrocarbon development. 相似文献

Propagation of torsional waves along isothermal and initially-untwisted magnetic-flux tubes embedded in the solar atmosphere
is studied analytically. Conditions for wave propagation along thin and wide magnetic-flux tubes are determined, and it is
shown that the propagation along thin tubes is cutoff free; however, for wide tubes the propagation is affected by a cutoff
frequency. A method to determine the cutoff frequency is presented and applied to a specific model of solar magnetic flux
tubes. An interesting result is that the cutoff frequency is a local quantity in the model and that its value at a given height

Using the integral field unit of X‐shooter at VLT, we have recovered the first velocity fields of GRB host galaxies at redshift <0.6. This facility is able to recover not only the velocity fields from almost all emission lines thanks to an unrivaled wavelength coverage, but also to recover maps of physical properties. We present the preliminary analysis of X‐shooter/IFU observations dedicated to the study of GRB host galaxies undertaken in the frame of the Italian‐French GTO program. A new method is outlined for estimating the annual injection of volcanic acids (mainly sulphuric) into the upper troposphere and the stratosphere. The potentiality of the method is demonstrated by data on a number of historically well-known eruptions. Analyses of annual layers in a mid-Greenland ice core reveal a continuous year-by-year record of the volcanic activity north of 20°S back to A.D. 553. Comparison with various climatic records suggests that periods of frequent and violent eruptions usually coincide with cold climatic conditions. For example, the highest volcanic activities since A.D. 553 occurred in A.D. 1250–1500 and A.D. 1550–1700, i.e. in the initial and the culminating phases of “the Little Ice Age”. 相似文献

During the BERLIOZ field phase on 20 July 1998 a 40 km wide ozone-plume 30 to 70 km north of Berlin in the lee of the city was detected. The ozone mixing ratio inside the plume was app. 15 ppb higher than outside, mainly caused by high ozone precursor emissions in Berlin, resulting in a net chemical ozone production of 6.5 ppb h–1, which overcompensates ozone advection of –3.6 ppb h–1 andturbulent diffusion of –1.1 ppb h–1. That means, although moreozone leaves the control volume far in the lee of Berlin than enters it at the leeside cityborder and although turbulent diffusion causes a loss of ozone in the leeside control volume the chemical production inside the volume leads to a net ozone increase. Using a semi-Lagrangian mass budget method to estimate the net ozone production, 5.0 ppb h–1 are calculated for theplume. This means a fraction of about 20% of ozone in the plume is producedby local emissions, therefore called `home made' by the Berlin emissions. For the same area KAMM/DRAIS simulations using an observation based initialisation, results in a net production rate between 4.0 and 6.5 ppbh–1, while the threefold nested EURAD model gives 6.0 ppbh–1. The process analysis indicates in many cases goodagreement (10% or better) between measurements and simulations not only in the ozone concentrations but also with respect to the physical and chemical processes governing the total change. Remaining differences are caused by different resolution in time and space of the models and measurements as well as by errors in the emission calculation.The upwind-downwind differences in PAN concentrations are partly similar to those of ozone, because in the BERLIOZ case they are governed mainly by photochemical production. While in the stable boundary layer at night and windward of Berlin 0.1 to 0.3 ppb are detected, in the centre of the plume at noon concentrations between 0.75 ppb and 1.0 ppb are measured. The O3/PAN ratio is about 80 to 120 and thus due to the relatively lowPAN concentrations significantly higher than found in previous studies. The low PAN formation on 20 July, was mainly restricted by the moderate nonmethane hydrocarbon levels, whereas high PAN concentrations of 3.0 ppb on 21 July, are caused by local production in the boundary layer and by large scale advection aloft. 相似文献

The 1959 summit eruption of Kīlauea volcano produced the highest recorded Hawaiian fountain in Hawai‘i. Quantitative analysis
of closely spaced samples from the final two high-fountaining episodes of the eruption result in a fine-scale textural study
of pyroclasts and provide a record of postfragmentation processes. As clast vesicularity increases, the vesicle number density
decreases and vesicle morphology shifts from small and round to larger and more irregular. The shift in microtexture corresponds
to greater degrees of postfragmentation expansion of clasts with higher vesicularity. We suggest the range of clast morphologies
in the deposit is related to thermal zonation within a Hawaiian fountain where the highest vesicularity clasts traveled in
the center and lowest traveled along the margins. Vesicle number densities are greatest in the highest fountaining episode
and therefore scale with intensity of activity. Major element chemical analyses and fasciculate crystal textures indicate
microlite-rich zones within individual clasts are portions of recycled lava lake material that were incorporated into newly
