Many climate models have problems simulating Indian summer monsoon rainfall and its variability, resulting in considerable uncertainty in future projections. Problems may relate to many factors, such as local effects of the formulation of physical parametrisation schemes, while common model biases that develop elsewhere within the climate system may also be important. Here we examine the extent and impact of cold sea surface temperature (SST) biases developing in the northern Arabian Sea in the CMIP5 multi-model ensemble, where such SST biases are shown to be common. Such biases have previously been shown to reduce monsoon rainfall in the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) by weakening moisture fluxes incident upon India. The Arabian Sea SST biases in CMIP5 models consistently develop in winter, via strengthening of the winter monsoon circulation, and persist into spring and summer. A clear relationship exists between Arabian Sea cold SST bias and weak monsoon rainfall in CMIP5 models, similar to effects in the MetUM. Part of this effect may also relate to other factors, such as forcing of the early monsoon by spring-time excessive equatorial precipitation. Atmosphere-only future time-slice experiments show that Arabian Sea cold SST biases have potential to weaken future monsoon rainfall increases by limiting moisture flux acceleration through non-linearity of the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship. Analysis of CMIP5 model future scenario simulations suggests that such effects are small compared to other sources of uncertainty, although models with large Arabian Sea cold SST biases may suppress the range of potential outcomes for changes to future early monsoon rainfall. 相似文献

High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide the unique capability to continuously monitor the coastal environment far
beyond the range of conventional microwave radars. Bragg-resonant backscattering by ocean waves with half the electromagnetic
radar wavelength allows ocean surface currents to be measured at distances up to 200 km. When a tsunami propagates from the
deep ocean to shallow water, a specific ocean current signature is generated throughout the water column. Due to the long
range of an HF radar, it is possible to detect this current signature at the shelf edge. When the shelf edge is about 100 km
in front of the coastline, the radar can detect the tsunami about 45 min before it hits the coast, leaving enough time to
issue an early warning. As up to now no HF radar measurements of an approaching tsunami exist, a simulation study has been
done to fix parameters like the required spatial resolution or the maximum coherent integration time allowed. The simulation
involves several steps, starting with the Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM) which is used to estimate the tsunami-induced
current velocity at 1 km spatial resolution and 1 s time step. This ocean current signal is then superimposed to modelled
and measured HF radar backscatter signals using a new modulation technique. After applying conventional HF radar signal processing
techniques, the surface current maps contain the rapidly changing tsunami-induced current features, which can be compared
to the HAMSOM data. The specific radial tsunami current signatures can clearly be observed in these maps, if appropriate spatial
and temporal resolution is used. Based on the entropy of the ocean current maps, a tsunami detection algorithm is described

A field experiment was conducted under rainfed environment of Pothowar region of Pakistan to assess physical properties of soil as influenced by various green manure legumes (sesbania, cluster bean and rice bean) and different P levels (0, 30, 60, 90 kg P2O5/ha). Highest fresh biomass was observed in sesbania (23 t/ha) followed by cluster bean (19 t/ha) and lowest in rice bean (17 t/ha). Maximum crude protein content was found in sesbania (17%) followed by rice bean (10%) and cluster bean (8%). Green manuring crops, on average reduced soil bulk density (5%), enhanced total porosity (8%), and macropores and large mesopores (28%). Maximum reduction (7%) in soil bulk density, and an increase (11%) in total soil porosity and available water (17%) was observed in plots where sesbania was incorporated as green manuring crop. The order of effectiveness in improving bulk density, macro and mesopores was sesbania > cluster bean > rice bean. Sesbania produced greater number of macro and large mesopores about 41% increase over control followed by cluster bean (29%) and rice bean (16%). Phosphorus application showed meager positive impact on various soil physical properties but did not significantly increased porosity or reduced bulk density. Significant differences in volume fraction in pore space suggest that pore space on a volume basis was much higher in sesbania-amended soil than in other treatments. 相似文献

Interest in the coastal dynamics of river plumes has mainly focused on large rivers, but plumes from the more numerous smaller
rivers have important local consequences and may, in aggregate, be significant contributors to coastal circulation. We studied
the dynamics of the plume from the Saco River in Saco Bay, Gulf of Maine, over a 3-year period. The transport and salinity
in the region are governed by river discharge, tides, winds, and interaction with the Western Maine Coastal Current. The dynamics
of the flow field vary with location within the plume and discharge. The far-field dynamics of the Saco River plume are dominated
by inertial processes (hence qualifying it as a small-scale river plume), during times of low discharge, with low salinity
water present both up and downstream of the river mouth, but are dominated by rotational processes during times of high discharge
(thus qualifying it as a large-scale river plume), with buoyant water primarily advected downshelf. Near-field dynamics are
governed by weak, subcritical flow during low discharge but strongly inertial, supercritical flow during high discharge. Offshore
movement of the plume is not governed by Ekman dynamics but is instead a result of discharge, wind-induced vertical mixing,

Fine extinction bands (FEBs) (also known as deformation lamellae) visible with polarized light microscopy in quartz consist of a range of nanostructures, inferring different formation processes. Previous transmission electron microscopy studies have shown that most FEB nanostructures in naturally deformed quartz are elongated subgrains formed by recovery of dislocation slip bands. Here we show that three types of FEB nanostructure occur in naturally deformed vein quartz from the low-grade metamorphic High-Ardenne slate belt (Belgium). Prismatic oriented FEBs are defined by bands of dislocation walls. Dauphiné twin boundaries present along the FEB boundaries probably formed after FEB formation. In an example of two sub-rhombohedral oriented FEBs, developed as two sets in one grain, the finer FEB set consists of elongated subgrains, similar to FEBs described in previous transmission electron microscopy studies. The second wider FEB set consists of bands with different dislocation density and fluid-inclusion content. The wider FEB set is interpreted as bands with different plastic strain associated with the primary growth banding of the vein quartz grain. The nanometre-scale fluid inclusions are interpreted to have formed from structurally bounded hydroxyl groups that moreover facilitated formation of the elongate subgrains. Larger fluid inclusions aligned along FEBs are explained by fluid-inclusion redistribution along dislocation cores. The prismatic FEB nanostructure and the relation between FEBs and growth bands have not been recognized before, although related structures have been reported in experimentally deformed quartz. 相似文献

A joint United States/Russian/French collaborative experiment was undertaken in March 1993 and March 1996. Projects LODE I and II (Lake Owens Dust Experiments) took place on the anthropogenically desertified playa (dry lakebed) and surrounding regions of Owens Lake, in east-central California. One of the five parts of Project LODE was to determine relationships between optical depth and flux of dust emitted from the dry lake. Project LODE II included subsequent dust plume measurements and size distributions obtained through April 1996, to further refine the flux measurements for distinct mineral aerosol source regions at Owens Lake. Size distributions of dust aerosol were determined and aerosol optical depths were calculated from sunphotometer solar extinction measurements taken downwind in plumes coming from the emissive areas of Owens Lake. This source was visually observed for 10 measured dust storms. The plume mass was calculated to be 1·5 × 109 g using ground-based measurements and ≥1·6 × 109 g from satellite data. Project LODE II results were found to be consistent with LODE I results for the south end of the playa, but flux values were found to be reduced for the northeastern portion of the playa by comparison.
