Spatial and seasonal variations of sulphate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients and metabolic products were determined down to 5 m sediment depth in pore waters of intertidal flats located in NW Germany. The impact of sediment permeability, pore water flow, and organic matter supply on deep pore water biogeochemistry was evaluated. Low sediment permeability leads to an enrichment of remineralisation products in pore waters of clay-rich sediments. In permeable sandy sediments pore water biogeochemistry differs depending on whether tidal flat margins or central parts of the tidal flat are studied. Pore water flow in tidal flat margins increases organic matter input. Substrate availability and enhanced temperatures in summer stimulate sulphate reducers down to 3.5 m sediment depth. Sulphate, DOC, and nutrient concentrations exhibit seasonal variations in deep permeable sediments of the tidal flat margin. In contrast, seasonal variations are small in deep pore waters of central parts of the sand flat. This study shows for the first time that seasonal variations in pore water chemistry are not limited to surface sediments, but may be observed down to some metres depth in permeable tidal flat margin sediments. In such systems more organic matter seems to be remineralised than deduced from surface sediment studies.  相似文献

Temporal observations of rip current circulation on a macro-tidal beach   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A field experiment was conducted on a high energy macro-tidal beach (Perranporth, UK) to examine rip current dynamics over a low-tide transverse bar/rip system in response to changing tide and wave conditions. Hydrodynamic data were collected using an array of in situ acoustic doppler current meters and pressure transducers, as well as 12 GPS-tracked Lagrangian surf zone drifters. Inter-tidal and sub-tidal morphology were measured through RTK-GPS and echo-sounder surveys. Data were collected for eight consecutive days (15 tides) over a spring-neap tidal cycle with tidal ranges of 4–6.5 m and offshore significant wave heights of 1–2 m and peak periods of 5–12 s.  相似文献

Knowledge on groundwater–surface water interaction and especially on exchange fluxes between streams and aquifers is an important prerequisite for the study of transport and fate of contaminants and nutrients in the hyporheic zone. One possibility to quantify groundwater–surface water exchange fluxes is by using heat as an environmlental tracer. Modern field equipment including multilevel temperature sticks and the novel open‐source analysis tool LPML make this technique ever more attractive. The recently developed LPML method solves the one‐dimensional fluid flow and heat transport equation by combining a local polynomial method with a maximum likelihood estimator. In this study, we apply the LPML method on field data to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of vertical fluxes and their uncertainties from temperature–time series measured in a Belgian lowland stream. Over several months, temperature data were collected with multilevel temperature sticks at the streambed top and at six depths for a small stream section. Long‐term estimates show a range from gaining fluxes of ?291 mm day?1 to loosing fluxes of 12 mm day?1; average seasonal fluxes ranged from ?138 mm day?1 in winter to ?16 mm day?1 in summer. With our analyses, we could determine a high spatial and temporal variability of vertical exchange fluxes for the investigated stream section. Such spatial and temporal variability should be taken into account in biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nutrients and metals and in fate analysis of contaminant plumes. In general, the stream section was gaining during most of the observation period. Two short‐term high stream stage events, seemingly caused by blockage of the stream outlet, led to a change in flow direction from gaining to losing conditions. We also found more discharge occurring at the outer stream bank than at the inner one indicating a local flow‐through system. Abstract

Radiative measurements were carried out continuously during a cruise from Australia to Antarctica during austral summer 1995/96. Both shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes were measured. Some of the results are:
  • The incoming solar radiation had a mean value of 217 W m–2; this was a relatively weak value due to the large amount of fractional cloud cover observed. The sun was, for a large part of the trip, above the horizon for 24 hours a day.

  • The reflectivity varied widely, not only as a function of sea‐ice concentration, but also as a function of ice type.

  • Snow covered pack ice gave the highest albedo values (<70%), while flooded sea ice and thin ice reflected much less (<30%).

  • For each sea‐ice type, short term observations showed a good relationship between albedo and ice concentration.

  • The albedo increased with decreasing solar elevation.

  • The net longwave radiation was negative (mean –27 W m–2); this small absolute value is due to a high amount of fractional cloud cover. There was a weak diurnal variation with a maximum loss (–33 W m–2) in the early afternoon.

  • On the average, the net radiation was positive for 17 hours, and negative for 7 hours a day. However, the duration of a positive balance depended strongly on the surface albedo.

  • For the observed albedo values, modelling results showed that the net radiation was always positive when averaged over a day. The magnitude, however, depended strongly on the surface albedo, varying by more than the factor of three.

We measured δD values of long chain n-alkanes isolated from 30 surface soil samples along two elevation transects on the Tibetan Plateau differing in precipitation regime and water source. The East Asian Monsoon precipitation dominates the wetter regime on the eastern slope (from 1230 to 4300 m) of Gongga Shan on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Precipitation from the Polar Westerlies dominates the drier region on the slope from 1900 to 5000 m in the West Kunlun Shan on the northwestern Tibetan Plateau. The decrease in δD value with elevation in the wetter region greatly exceeded that in drier region by, −1.9 ± 0.1‰/100 m and −1.4 ± 1.0‰/100 m respectively. The apparent fractionation between leaf wax and precipitation εwax-p values in the wetter region (ca. −164‰) were more negative than those in drier region (ca. −125‰ above 3200 m).We also measured δD values in leaves of six common living trees (values from −287‰ to −193‰) from Gongga Shan, ranging from about 2900-4200 m. The abundance-weighted average values of the n-alkanes (δDwax) show a strong reverse correlation with sample source elevation (R2 0.78 for soils from Gongga Shan; R2 0.85 for soils from West Kunlun Shan above 3200 m), suggesting that n-alkane δDwax faithfully records the precipitation δD and that the isotopic altitude effect of precipitation controls δDwax altitudinal gradients in the mountains. The data show a fairly strong monotonic dependency of n-alkane δD values on elevation for the eastern Plateau, but a complex relationship between n-alkane δD values and elevation for the northwestern Plateau. The δDwax values at sites below 3200 m from the Kunlun Shan area exhibit an unexpected positive correlation with elevation. The study confirms the potential for using sediment δDwax values to reconstruct paleo-elevation in wetter regions, but suggests caution in applying the approach to dry regions. Our results also show it is essential to consider the intricacy of the pattern of atmospheric circulation and water sources and their influence on the lapse rate of δD values with elevation.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted on a low-gradient, high-energy sandy beach (Truc Vert, France) and a steep, low-energy gravel beach (Slapton, UK) to examine alongshore-directed currents within the swash zone. At Truc Vert, data were collected over 33 tidal cycles with offshore significant wave heights of 1–4 m and periods of 5–12 s. At Slapton data were collected during 12 tides with wave heights of 0.3–1 m and periods of 4–9 s. The swash motion was predominantly at infragravity frequencies at Truc Vert and incident frequencies at Slapton.  相似文献
