We used households as the primary unit of analysis to synthesize agrobiodiversity research in small-scale coffee farms and cooperatives of Nicaragua and El Salvador. Surveys, focus groups, and plant inventories were used to analyze agrobiodiversity and its contribution to livelihoods. Households managed high levels of agrobiodiversity, including 100 shade tree and epiphyte species, food crops, and medicinals. Small farms contained higher levels of agrobiodiversity than larger, collectively managed cooperatives. Households benefited from agrobiodiversity through consumption and sales. To better support agrobiodiversity conservation, our analysis calls for a hybrid approach integrating bottom-up initiatives with the resources from top-down projects.  相似文献

A new integral-field spectrograph, SAURON, is described. It is based on the TIGER principle, and uses a lenslet array. SAURON has a large field of view and high throughput, and allows simultaneous sky subtraction. Its design is optimized for studies of the stellar kinematics, gas kinematics, and line-strength distributions of nearby early-type galaxies. The instrument design and specifications are described, as well as the extensive analysis software which was developed to obtain fully calibrated spectra, and the associated kinematic and line-strength measurements. A companion paper will report on the first results obtained with SAURON on the William Herschel Telescope.  相似文献

We propose to use multiple-imaged gravitational lenses to set limits on gravity theories without dark matter, specifically tensor–vector–scalar (TeVeS) theory, a theory which is consistent with fundamental relativistic principles and the phenomenology of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory. After setting the framework for lensing and cosmology, we analytically derive the deflection angle for the point lens and the Hernquist galaxy profile, and study their patterns in convergence, shear and amplification. Applying our analytical lensing models, we fit galaxy-quasar lenses in the CfA-Arizona Space Telescope Lens Survey (CASTLES) sample. We do this with three methods, fitting the observed Einstein ring sizes, the image positions, or the flux ratios. In all the cases, we consistently find that stars in galaxies in MOND/TeVeS provide adequate lensing. Bekenstein's toy μ function provides more efficient lensing than the standard MOND μ function. But for a handful of lenses, a good fit would require a lens mass orders of magnitude larger/smaller than the stellar mass derived from luminosity unless the modification function μ and modification scale a 0 for the universal gravity were allowed to be very different from what spiral galaxy rotation curves normally imply. We discuss the limitation of present data and summarize constraints on the MOND μ function. We also show that the simplest TeVeS 'minimal-matter' cosmology, a baryonic universe with a cosmological constant, can fit the distance–redshift relation from the supernova data, but underpredicts the sound horizon size at the last scattering. We conclude that lensing is a promising approach to differentiate laws of gravity.  相似文献

Hydrological budgets and flow pathways have been quantified for a small upland catchment (1.76 km2) in the northeast of Scotland. Water balance calculations for four subcatchments identified spatial variability within the catchment, with an estimated runoff enhancement of up to 25% for the upper western area, compared with the rest of the catchment. Data from spatial hydrochemical sampling, over a range of flow conditions, were used to identify the principal hillslope runoff mechanisms within the catchment. A hydrochemical mixing analysis revealed that runoff emerging from springs in various locations of the hillslope accounted for a significant proportion of flow in the streams, even during storm events. A hydrological model of the catchment was calibrated using the calculated stream flows for four locations, together with results from the mixing analysis for different time points. The calibrated model was used to predict the temporal variability in contributions to stream flow from the hillslope springs and soil water flows. The overall split ranged from 57%:43% spring water:soil water in the upper eastern subcatchment, to 76%:24% in the upper western subcatchment. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
