We present spectropolarimetric observations of seven broad-line radio galaxies. We find significantly polarized broad Hα emission in four objects including two, Arp 102B and 3C 390.3, which have double-peaked line profiles. In these objects the prominent redshifted and blueshifted peaks of the broad Hα line have no clear counterparts in polarized flux. This conflicts with theoretical predictions for a relativistic line-emitting disc with an electron scattering atmosphere, one of the leading models advanced to account for the double-peaked lines. The shapes and widths of the polarized line profiles can be explained if, as expected in unified schemes, the scattering occurs near the poles of an obscuring torus. However, the observed polarization position angles favour geometries in which the scattering plane is perpendicular to the radio jet. A configuration in which Hα photons emitted by a biconical flow are scattered off the inner wall of the torus has this property, and would also produce a single-peaked scattered line profile. With the exception of 3C 227, the sample as a whole conforms to the general trend in powerful radio galaxies for the optical polarization to be aligned with the radio source axis, favouring toroidal rather than polar scattering. 相似文献

We present spectroscopic CCD observations of R Canis Majoris obtained in 1993. A total of 19 plates for Hα line were secured
and reduced with the IRAF for radial velocities. A new radial velocity curve has been analyzed with collected light curves
by the method of the Wilson and Devinney Differential Correction. The solution set including mass ratio q = 0.17 is determined
as a unique solution by cross checking simultaneous adjustment of radial velocity and light curves, mass-luminosity relation,
and distance.

Fumigation under sea-breeze conditions is a major feature of the air pollution meteorology in the coastal industrial region of Kwinana, south of Perth in Western Australia. An intensive field experiment on fumigation was carried out in the region in early 1995 with the objective of using the measured data to develop and test a shoreline fumigation model. Fumigation of plumes from the Kwinana Power Station was studied using an instrumented research aircraft, radiosonde balloons, meteorological stations, a lidar, a mobile surface sampler, and sonic anemometers. The study has yielded a detailed and high quality data set as a result of both the range of observations undertaken and of the regularity of the sea-breeze conditions under scrutiny. The details of the experiment are summarised in this paper and some typical results are presented. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal measurements of shallow sub-surface soil physical properties were made within a 1 km2 upland catchment. The surface soil layer of the catchment was organic rich (>70% organic matter) with a corresponding total porosity of 81%. Monthly point observations of volumetric water content (θ) were combined with point estimates of total porosity () and the porosity <50 μm (residual), to define the ratio of water filled pore volume:pore volume in pores <50 μm (=θ/residual). Values of θ/residual were compared with discharge to test whether mass flow occurred when θ/residual>1. A correlation between water content and discharge was found, with discharge increasing rapidly when θ/residual approached unity. Similar relationships between water content and catchment discharge were identified for soil units adjacent to the stream when θ/residual approached unity. These data suggest that soil pores >50 μm are of crucial importance in determining catchment discharge. Spatial and temporal variations in soil properties related to moisture content of the soil were also observed. Under dry conditions, a clear division based on aspect was noted, the west-facing side of the catchment being wettest. In wetter months, total porosity and soil water content were significantly affected by soil type and the spatial pattern of soil water content was more variable than in the dryer months. The physical quantification of soil properties in the shallow sub-surface layer proved important in explaining different initial changes in discharge from the catchment in response to a rainfall event. 相似文献

Near-instantaneous vertical scans ofpower plant plumes, sampled by a lidar over three days as part ofthe 1995 Kwinana Coastal Fumigation Study, are analysed to obtainhourly-averaged total dispersion moments up to fourth order, andalso the relative and meander spreads. Two distinct fumigationcases, termed as neutral and stable cases, are observed dependingon whether the plume transport prior to fumigation takes place ina neutral atmosphere, or in a stable region above the neutralatmosphere. Plumes in the stable case are observed to undergoslower fumigation. The mean spreads display contrasting behavioursfor the two fumigating cases, while the vertical skewness shows anegative peak value of about -1 for the neutral case and -2for the stable case in the fumigation zone. The lateral skewnessis positive with a peak value of about unity for both cases, andis attributed to wind directional shear within the thermalinternal boundary layer. The vertical kurtosis is greater than theGaussian value of 3 in the fumigation zone, while the lateralkurtosis is scattered about this value. A recently-developedskewed probability density function model with wind shear isapplied to describe the fumigation data. Overall, the modelsimulates the observed vertical and lateral statistics well up tothe fourth order, except for the lateral skewness and kurtosisvalues in the stable case, which is probably due to the lidar'srange and sensitivity constraints and an inadequate sample size.Although the lateral turbulent diffusion in the model is Gaussian(i.e., zero skewness), the inclusion of wind shear in the model ismanifested in the predicted lateral skewness being greater thanzero in the fumigation zone, and of similar magnitude to the lidardata in the neutral case. 相似文献

Through source control, total DDT annual emissions from the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts' submarine outfalls decreased by a factor of 30 between 1971 and 1977 Here we report persistent elevated levels of DDT residues measured in three species of marine fishes with distinctly different feeding habits. Over the study interval, median levels of DDT residues have decreased 3-fold (8-fold and 4-fold from peak medians) in flesh of black perch and kelp bass. However, there was no apparent decrease in Dover sole. The sediment reservoir is the likely source of persistent contamination of fishes in the discharge area. 相似文献

Despite major decreases in DDT and PCB emissions over a three year period by the dominant discharger to a coastal marine site, only minor (and very similar) decreases were observed in concentrations of these pollutants in bottom sediments and flatfish from the outfall monitoring zone.
