Hyaloclastites develop where lava interacts with water resulting in deposits that have a unique and often complex range of petrophysical properties. A combination of eruptive style and emplacement environment dictates the size, geometry and distribution of different hyaloclastite facies and their associated primary physical properties such as porosity, permeability and velocity. To date, links between the 3D facies variability within these systems and their petrophysical properties remain poorly understood. Hjörleifshöfði in southern Iceland presents an exceptional outcrop exposure of an emergent hyaloclastite sequence >1 km wide by >200 m high and enables an investigation of the distribution of the hyaloclastite deposits at seismic scale. Within this study we present a photogrammetry-based 3D model from part of this recent hyaloclastite delta and incorporate previous work by Watton et al. (Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2013, 250, 19) to undertake detailed facies interpretation and quantification. Laboratory petrophysical analyses were performed on 34 core plugs cut from key field facies samples, including P- and S-wave velocity, density, porosity and permeability at both ambient and confining pressure. Integration of the 3D model with the petrophysical data has enabled the production of pseudo-wireline logs and property distribution maps which demonstrate the variability of physical properties within hyaloclastite sequences at outcrop to seismic scale. Through comparison of our data with examples of older buried hyaloclastite sequences we demonstrate that the wide-ranging properties of young hyaloclastites become highly uniform in older sequences making their identification by remote geophysical methods for similar facies variations more challenging. Our study provides an improved understanding of the petrophysical property distribution within hyaloclastite sequences and forms a valuable step towards improving the understanding of similar subsurface sequences and their implications for imaging and fluid flow. 相似文献

A large component of present-day sea-level rise is due to the melt of glaciers other than the ice sheets. Recent projections of their contribution to global sea-level rise for the twenty-first century range between 70 and 180 mm, but bear significant uncertainty due to poor glacier inventory and lack of hypsometric data. Here, we aim to update the projections and improve quantification of their uncertainties by using a recently released global inventory containing outlines of almost every glacier in the world. We model volume change for each glacier in response to transient spatially-differentiated temperature and precipitation projections from 14 global climate models with two emission scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) prepared for the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The multi-model mean suggests sea-level rise of 155 ± 41 mm (RCP4.5) and 216 ± 44 mm (RCP8.5) over the period 2006–2100, reducing the current global glacier volume by 29 or 41 %. The largest contributors to projected global volume loss are the glaciers in the Canadian and Russian Arctic, Alaska, and glaciers peripheral to the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. Although small contributors to global volume loss, glaciers in Central Europe, low-latitude South America, Caucasus, North Asia, and Western Canada and US are projected to lose more than 80 % of their volume by 2100. However, large uncertainties in the projections remain due to the choice of global climate model and emission scenario. With a series of sensitivity tests we quantify additional uncertainties due to the calibration of our model with sparsely observed glacier mass changes. This gives an upper bound for the uncertainty range of ±84 mm sea-level rise by 2100 for each projection. 相似文献

If life ever appeared on Mars, could we find traces of primitive life embedded in sedimentary meteorites? To answer this question, a 3.5-byr-old volcanic sediment containing microfossils was embedded in the heat shield of a space capsule in order to test survival of the rock and the microfossils during entry into the Earth’s atmosphere (the STONE 6 experiment). The silicified volcanic sediment from the Kitty’s Gap Chert (Pilbara, Australia) is considered to be an excellent analogue for Noachian-age volcanic sediments. The microfossils in the chert are also analogues for potential martian life. An additional goal was to investigate the survival of living microorganisms (Chroococcidiopsis) protected by a 2-cm thick layer of rock in order to test whether living endolithic organisms could survive atmospheric entry when protected by a rocky coating.Mineralogical alteration of the sediment due to shock heating was manifested by the formation of a fusion crust, cracks in the chert due to prograde and retrograde changes of α quartz to β quartz, increase in the size of the fluid inclusions, and dewatering of the hydromuscovite-replaced volcanic protoliths. The carbonaceous microfossils embedded in the chert matrix survived in the rock away from the fusion crust but there was an increase in the maturity index of the kerogen towards the crust. We conclude that this kind of sediment can survive atmospheric entry and, if it contains microfossils, they could also survive. The living microorganisms were, however, completely carbonised by flame leakage to the back of the sample and therefore non-viable. However, using an analytical model to estimate the temperature reached within the sample thickness, we conclude that, even without flame leakage, the living organisms probably need to be protected by at least 5 cm of rock in order to be shielded from the intense heat of entry. 相似文献

Facilitating adaptation to global climate change: perspectives from experts and decision makers serving the Florida Keys 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Slivers of land amidst the world’s third largest barrier reef, the Florida Keys provide unique insights on the emerging challenges associated with adaptation to global climate change. While political will and public awareness are gradually shifting on the imposing risks, analysis of survey responses from experts and decision makers serving the Florida Keys (federal, state and local personnel) reveals insufficient resources, limited direction and leadership, and lack of institutional frameworks to facilitate the adaptation process. Against this backdrop, we investigate experts and decision makers’ interest in an array of adaptation measures including their willingness to support a proposed ‘Community Adaptation Fund’ (CAF) to mobilize resources and lay the foundation for adaptation initiatives in the Florida Keys. We also explore potential funding sources for establishing the proposed CAF, and test the feasibility of a diverse set of financing mechanisms. We discuss implications of our findings in the context of enhancing adaptive capacity in the Florida Keys and beyond. 相似文献

This study investigates Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in the planar elliptic restricted three-body problem (ER3BP),
a generalization of the circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) that asks for the motion of a test particle in the
presence of two elliptically orbiting point masses. Previous studies demonstrate that an understanding of transport phenomena
in the CR3BP, an autonomous dynamical system (when viewed in a rotating frame), can be obtained through analysis of the stable
and unstable manifolds of certain periodic solutions to the CR3BP equations of motion. These invariant manifolds form cylindrical
tubes within surfaces of constant energy that act as separatrices between orbits with qualitatively different behaviors. The
computation of LCS, a technique typically applied to fluid flows to identify transport barriers in the domains of time-dependent
velocity fields, provides a convenient means of determining the time-dependent analogues of these invariant manifolds for
the ER3BP, whose equations of motion contain an explicit dependency on the independent variable. As a direct application,
this study uncovers the contribution of the planet Mercury to the Interplanetary Transport Network, a network of tubes through
the solar system that can be exploited for the construction of low-fuel spacecraft mission trajectories.

The enzyme-labeled fluorescence (ELF-97®) substrate produces an insoluble, fluorescent yellow-green product at the site of alkaline-phosphatase (AP) activity. Fifteen coastal phytoplankton species were tested to determine if AP activity could be detected in phosphate-depleted media. All species tested, except Synechococcus bacillaris, expressed AP activity. Subsequently, threshold concentrations of soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) at which AP activity could be detected by ELF-97® were determined for Chaetoceros neogracile, Chlorella autotrophica, Isochrysis sp., Prorocentrum minimum, and Tetraselmis chui. Microalgal species differed significantly in the SRP concentration at which AP activity was first detectable (10.1–16.4 µM), well above concentrations normally considered limiting for phytoplankton. P. minimum began to express AP activity at a higher SRP concentration than the other algal species; this may be attributable to a relatively high DNA/cell ratio in P. minimum, compared to the other phytoplankton. Thus, phytoplankton species may respond to phosphorus deficiency at high SRP concentrations. 相似文献

Research flights with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) C-130 airborne laboratory were conducted over the
equatorial ocean during the Pacific Atmospheric Sulfur Experiment (PASE). The focused, repetitive flight plans provided a
unique opportunity to explore the principal pathways of sulfur processing in remote marine environments in close detail. Fast
airborne measurements of SO2 using the Drexel University APIMS (Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometer) instrument further provided unprecedented
insight into the complete budget of this important sulfur gas. In general, turbulent mixing in the marine boundary layer (MBL)
continuously depletes SO2 due to the shallow convection of the tropical trade wind regime by venting the gas into the buffer layer (BuL) above. However,
on nearly one-third of the flights a net import of SO2 into the MBL from the BuL was observed. Concurrent measurements of the DMS budget allowed for a heterogeneous S(IV) oxidation
rate to be inferred from the SO2 budget residual. The average heterogeneous loss rate was found to be 0.05 h−1, which taken in conjunction with the observed aerosol surface area distributions and O3 levels indicates that the supermicron aerosols maintain a near neutral pH. The average dry deposition velocity of SO2 was found to be 0.4 cm s−1, about 30% lower than predicted by standard parameterizations. The yield of SO2 from DMS oxidation was found to be near unity. The mission averages indicate that approximately 57% of the SO2 in the MBL is lost to aerosols, 27% is subject to dry deposition, 7% is mixed into the BuL, and 10% is oxidized by OH. 相似文献

A study of the hydrologic effects of catchment change from pasture to plantation was carried out in Gatum, south‐western Victoria, Australia. This study describes the hydrologic characteristics of two adjacent catchments: one with 97% grassland and the other one with 62% Eucalyptus globulus plantations. Streamflow from both catchments was intermittent during the 20‐month study period. Monthly streamflow was always greater in the pasture‐dominated catchment compared with the plantation catchment because of lower evapotranspiration in the pasture‐based catchment. This difference in streamflow was also observed even during summer 2010/2011 when precipitation was 74% above average (1954–2012) summer rainfall. Streamflow peaks in the plantation‐based catchment were smaller than in the pasture‐dominated system. Flow duration curves show differences between the pasture and plantation‐dominated catchments and affect both high‐flow and low‐flow periods. Groundwater levels fell (up to 4.4 m) in the plantation catchment during the study period but rose (up to 3.2 m) in the pasture catchment. Higher evapotranspiration in the plantation catchment resulted in falling groundwater levels and greater disconnection of the groundwater system from the stream, resulting in lower baseflow contribution to streamflow. Salt export from each catchment increases with increasing flow and is higher at the pasture catchment, mainly because of the higher flow. Reduced salt loading to streams due to tree planting is generally considered environmentally beneficial in saline areas of south‐eastern Australia, but this benefit is offset by reduced total streamflow. We report a correlated NanoSIMS‐transmission electron microscopy study of the ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 5958. We identified 10 presolar SiC grains, 2 likely presolar graphite grains, and 20 presolar silicate and/or oxide grains in NWA 5958. We suggest a slight modification of the commonly used classification system for presolar oxides and silicates that better reflects the grains’ likely stellar origins. The matrix‐normalized presolar SiC abundance in NWA 5958 is ppm (2σ) similar to that seen in many classes of unmetamorphosed chondrites. In contrast, the matrix‐normalized abundance of presolar O‐rich phases (silicates and oxides) is ppm (2σ), much lower than seen in interplanetary dust particles and the least‐altered CR, CO, and ungrouped C chondrites, but close to that reported for CM chondrites. NanoSIMS mapping also revealed an unusual 13C‐enriched (δ13C≈100–200‰) carbonaceous rim surrounding a 1.4 μm diameter phyllosilicate grain. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of two presolar grains with a likely origin in asymptotic giant branch stars identified one as enstatite and one as Al‐Mg spinel with minor Cr. The enstatite grain amorphized rapidly under the electron beam, suggesting partial hydration. TEM data of NWA 5958 matrix confirm that it has experienced aqueous alteration and support the suggestion of Jacquet et al. (34) that this meteorite has affinities to CM2 chondrites. 相似文献
