We used climatological composite analysis to investigate El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signals in long-term shallow ground water level observations from four wells in the lower Fraser Valley of British Columbia. Significance of differences between warm-phase, cold-phase, and neutral climate states was assessed with a Monte Carlo bootstrap technique. We also considered time series of local precipitation and streamflow for comparison. Composite annual hyetographs suggest that ENSO precipitation impacts are largely limited to winter and spring, with higher and lower rainfall occurring, respectively, under cold-phase and warm-phase episodes. This is consistent with prior work in the region and is found to be directly reflected in both streamflow and ground water level data. The mean magnitude of ENSO terrestrial hydrologic anomalies can be up to approximately 50% of the average seasonal cycle amplitude. ENSO does not appear to systematically affect annual hydrometeorological cycle timing in this study area. However, relative to the surface hydrologic systems considered, aquifers are observed to retain a stronger memory of seasonal ENSO-related precipitation anomalies, with changes potentially extending through the following summer, presumably reflecting storage effects. The steep source counts and negative K -corrections of bright submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) suggest that a significant fraction of those observed at high flux densities may be gravitationally lensed, and that the lensing objects may often lie at redshifts above 1, where clusters of galaxies are difficult to detect through other means. In this case, follow-up of bright SMGs may be used to identify dense structures along the line-of-sight. Here, we investigate the probability for SMGs to experience strong lensing, using the latest N -body simulations and observed source flux and redshift distributions. We find that almost all high-redshift sources with a flux density above 100 mJy will be lensed if they are not relatively local galaxies. We also give estimates of the fraction of sources experiencing strong lensing as a function of observed flux density. This has implications for planning follow-up observations for bright SMGs discovered in future surveys with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 and other instruments. The largest uncertainty in these calculations is the maximum allowed lensing amplification, which is dominated by the presently unknown spatial extent of SMGs. 相似文献

It is generally accepted that the heating of gas in clusters of galaxies by active galactic nuclei is a form of feedback. Feedback is required to ensure a long-term, sustainable balance between heating and cooling. This work investigates the impact of proportional stochastic feedback on the energy balance in the intracluster medium. Using a generalized analytical model for a cluster atmosphere, it is shown that an energy equilibrium can be reached exponentially quickly. Applying the tools of stochastic calculus, it is demonstrated that the result is robust with regard to the model parameters, even though they affect the amount of variability in the system. 相似文献

Solar flare gamma-ray emissions from energetic ions and electrons have been detected and measured to GeV energies since 1980. In addition, neutrons produced in solar flares with 100 MeV to GeV energies have been observed at the Earth. These emis-sions are produced by the highest energy ions and electrons accelerated at the Sun and they provide our only direct (albeit secondary) knowledge about the properties of the acceler-ator(s) acting in a solar flare. The solar flares, which have direct evidence for pion-decaygamma-rays, are unique and are the focus of this paper. We review our current knowl-edge of the highest energy solar emissions, and how the characteristics of the acceleration process are deduced from the observations. Results from the RHESSI, INTEGRAL and CORONAS missions will also be covered. The review will also cover the solar flare ca-pabilities of the new mission, FERMI GAMMA RAY SPACE TELESCOPE, launched on 2008 June 11. Finally, we discuss the requirements for future missions to advance this vital area of solar flare physics. 相似文献

Turbulent Pressure and Velocity Perturbations Induced by Gentle Hills Covered with Sparse and Dense Canopies 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
How the spatial perturbations of the first and second moments of the velocity and pressure fields differ for flow over a train of gentle hills covered by either sparse or dense vegetation is explored using large-eddy simulation (LES). Two simulations are investigated where the canopy is composed of uniformly arrayed rods each with a height that is comparable to the hill height. In the first simulation, the rod density is chosen so that much of the momentum is absorbed within the canopy volume yet the canopy is not dense enough to induce separation on the lee side of the hill. In the second simulation, the rod density is large enough to induce recirculation inside the canopy on the lee side of the hill. For this separating flow case, zones of intense shear stress originating near the canopy-atmosphere interface persist all the way up to the middle layer, ‘contaminating’ much of the middle and outer layers with shear stress gradients. The implications of these persistent shear-stress gradients on rapid distortion theory and phase relationships between higher order velocity statistics and hill-induced mean velocity perturbations (Δu) are discussed. Within the inner layer, these intense shear zones improve predictions of the spatial perturbation by K-theory, especially for the phase relationships between the shear stress (~ ?Δu/?z) and the velocity variances, where z is the height. For the upper canopy layers, wake production increases with increasing leaf area density resulting in a vertical velocity variance more in phase with Δu than with ?Δu/?z. However, background turbulence and inactive eddies may have dampened this effect for the longitudinal velocity variance. The increase in leaf area density does not significantly affect the phase relationship between mean surface pressure and topography for the two simulations, though the LES results here confirm earlier findings that the minimum mean pressure shifts downstream from the hill crest. The increase in leaf area density and associated flow separation simply stretches this difference further downstream. This shift increases the pressure drag, the dominant term in the overall drag on the hill surface, by some 15%. With regards to the normalized pressure variance, increasing leaf area density increases ${\sigma_p/u_{*}^{2}}$ near the canopy top, where u * is the longitudinally averaged friction velocity at the canopy top and σ p is the standard deviation of the pressure fluctuations. This increase is shown to be consistent with a primitive scaling argument on the leading term describing the mean-flow turbulent interaction. This scaling argument also predicts the spatial variations in σ p above the canopy reasonably well for both simulations, but not inside the canopy. 相似文献

We present a Palmer Drought Severity Index reconstruction (r = 0.61, P < 0.01) from 1440 to 2007 for the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, based on tree rings of the forest fir (Abies forrestii). Persistent decadal dry intervals were found in the 1440s–1460s, 1560s–1580s, 1700s, 1770s, 1810s, 1860s and 1980s, and
the extreme wet epochs were the 1480s–1490s, 1510s–1520s, 1590s, 1610s–1630s, 1720s–1730s, 1800s, 1830s, 1870s, 1930s, 1950s
and after the 1990s. Comparisons of our record with those identified in other moisture related reconstructions for nearby
regions showed that our reconstructed droughts were relatively consistent with those found in other regions of Indochina,
suggesting similar drought regimes. Spectral peaks of 2.3–5.5 years may be indicative of ENSO activity, as also suggested
by negative correlations with SSTs in the eastern equatorial and southeastern Pacific Ocean. Significant multidecadal spectral
peaks of 29.2–40.9 and 56.8–60.2 years were identified. As indicated by the spatial correlation patterns, the decadal-scale
variability may be linked to SST variations in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. 相似文献

Tidal inundation was restored to a severely degraded tropical acid sulfate soil landscape and subsequent changes in the abundance and fractionation of Al, Fe and selected trace metals were investigated. After 5 a of regular tidal inundation there were large decreases in water-soluble and exchangeable Al fractions within former sulfuric horizons. This was strongly associated with decreased soil acidity and increases in pH, suggesting pH-dependent immobilisation of Al via precipitation as poorly soluble phases. The water-soluble fractions of Fe, Zn, Ni and Mn also decreased. However, there was substantial enrichment (2–5×) of the reactive Fe fraction (FeR; 1 M HCl extractable) near the soil surface, plus a closely corresponding enrichment of 1 M HCl extractable Cr, Zn, Ni and Mn. Surficial accumulations of Fe(III) minerals in the inter-tidal zone were poorly crystalline (up to 38% FeR) and comprised mainly of schwertmannite (Fe8O8(OH)6SO4) with minor quantities of goethite (α-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH). These Fe (III) mineral accumulations provide an effective substrate for the adsorption/co-precipitation and accumulation of trace metals. Arsenic displayed contrary behaviour to trace metals with peak concentrations (∼60 μg g−1) near the redox minima. Changes in the abundance and fractionation of the various metals can be primarily explained by the shift in the geochemical regime from oxic–acidic to reducing-circumneutral conditions, combined with the enrichment of reactive Fe near the soil surface. Whilst increasing sequestration of trace metals via sulfidisation is likely to occur over the long-term, the current abundance of reactive Fe near the sediment–water interface favours a dynamic environment with respect to metals in the tidally inundated areas. 相似文献

We have determined metallographic cooling rates below 975 K for eight main group (MG) pallasites from Ni profiles across taenite lamellae of known crystallographic orientation in metallic regions with Widmanstätten patterns. Comparison with profiles generated by modeling kamacite growth gave cooling rates ranging from 2.5 to 18 K/Myr. Relative cooling rates were also inferred from the sizes of cloudy zone particles in 28 MG pallasites (86-170 nm) and tetrataenite bandwidths in 20 MG pallasites (1050-2170 nm), as these parameters are positively correlated with each other and negatively correlated with the metallographic cooling rates. These three different techniques show that MG pallasites cooled below 975 K at significantly diverse rates. Since samples from the core-mantle boundary should have indistinguishable cooling rates, MG pallasites could not have cooled at this location. Group IIIAB irons, which were previously thought to be core samples from the MG pallasite body, have faster cooling rates (∼50-350 K/Myr) and smaller cloudy zone particle sizes and tetrataenite bandwidths. This shows that IIIAB irons cooled faster than MG pallasites and could not plausibly be from the same body. The absence of related iron meteorites and achondrites and our thermal constraints suggest that MG pallasites cooled at diverse depths in a pallasitic body consisting of well-mixed olivine and metallic Fe-Ni. Such a body may have formed during an impact on a differentiated asteroid or protoplanet that mixed olivine mantle fragments with residual Ir-poor molten metal from the outermost part of a core that chemically resembled the IIIAB core and was ∼80% fractionally crystallized. Separation of the solid core and most of the associated mantle may have resulted from a grazing hit-and-run impact with a larger protoplanet or asteroid. Thermal calculations suggest that the radius of the pallasitic body was 400 km but the likely presence of a regolith would reduce this estimate considerably. 相似文献

High-resolution (0.34 nm) reflectance spectra of a suite of terrestrial ortho- and clinopyroxenes were characterized in the 506-nm region. This region exhibits absorption bands attributed to spin-forbidden transitions in Fe2+ located in the M2, and possibly M1, crystallographic site(s). The most intense absorption bands (up to 3.8% deep in <45 μm fractions) are present in low Ca-content orthopyroxene spectra. This region exhibits two (spectral Group I) or more (spectral Group II) absorption bands in the 500-515 nm interval. Group I spectra are associated with the lowest Ca-content samples. For orthopyroxenes, the number of constituent absorption bands and band depths vary as a function of Ca content; increasing Ca content results the appearance of more than two absorption bands and a general reduction in band depths, offsetting an expected increase in band depth with increasing Fe2+ content; band depths may also be reduced due to the long wavelength wing of ultraviolet region Fe-O charge transfer absorptions. Band depths and shapes in this region are also a function of grain size, with the strongest bands appearing for larger grain sizes - in the 90-250 μm range. The number and position of constituent absorption bands can be used to constrain factors such as cooling rates, as expressed in the formation of Guinier-Preston zones versus coarser-grained augite exsolution lamellae. Band depths in the spectra of fine-grained (<45 μm) clinopyroxenes do not exceed 1% and are generally lowest for spectral type A clinopyroxenes, where most of the Fe2+ is present in the M1 crystallographic site. The appearance of the 506 nm band in the spectra of pyroxene-bearing asteroids can be used to constrain pyroxene composition and structure. The results of this study suggest that detailed analysis of absorption features in the 506 nm region is a powerful tool for determining the composition and structure of pyroxenes. The spectral resolution of the VIR-MS spectrometer aboard the Dawn spacecraft - which will examine Asteroid 4 Vesta, a body possessing surficial pyroxenes - will be sufficient to provide some constraints on pyroxene composition. 相似文献
