Infrared spectroscopy has been calibrated to provide a preciseand accurate method for determining the concentrations of molecularwater and hydroxyl groups in hydrous albitic glasses. At totalwater contents less than 4 wt.%, most of the water is dissolvedas hydroxyl groups; at higher total water contents, molecularwater becomes the dominant species. For total water contentsabove 4 wt.%, the amount of water dissolved as hydroxyl groupsis nearly constant at about 2 wt.% and additional water is incorporatedas molecular water. These trends in the concentrations of theH-bearing species are similar to those observed in other silicateglasses using infrared and NMR spectroscopies. The ratio ofmolecular water to hydroxyl groups at a given total water contentis independent of the pressure and only weakly dependent onthe temperature of equilibration. Molecular water and hydroxyl group concentrations in glassesprovide constraints on the dissolution mechanisms of water insilicate liquids. Several mixing models involving homogeneousequilibria of the form H2O+O2– = 2OH among meltspecies in albitic melts have been developed. These models canaccount for the measured species concentrations if the effectsof non-ideal behavior or mixing of polymerized units are included,or by allowing for several different anhydrous species. We used two thermodynamic models of hydrous albitic melts tocalculate phase equilibria. The first assumes that Henry's lawholds for molecular water in albitic liquids; i.e. that theactivity of molecular water in the melt is proportional to itsmole fraction as determined by infrared spectroscopy. The seconddescribes the speciation and thermodynamics of hydrous albiticmelts using the formalism of a strictly regular solution. Thesemodels can account reasonably well for the position of the vapor-saturatedsolidus of high albite and the pressure and temperature dependenceof the solubility of water in albitic melts. To the extent thatthese models are successful, our approach provides a directlink between measured species concentrations in hydrous albiticglasses and the macroscopic thermodyn amic properties of theNaAlSi3O8-H2O system.  相似文献

Sillimanite from a variety of high-grade metamorphic rocks containsfrom 0.13 to 1.82 weight per cent Fe2O3 and less than 0.1 weightper cent TiO2. The iron is trivalent and substitutes for Alonly. Ilmenite associated with the sillimanite contains no morethan 0.4 weight per cent Al2O3, SiO2, CaO, and MnO; and MgOdoes not exceed 1.6 weight per cent. It ranges in compositionfrom Ilm99Hem1 to Ilm85Hem15. A least squares fit of precision unit cell data on 10 analyzedsillimanites gives the following cell dimensions for iron-freesillimanite: a = 7.4830 Á, b = 7.6708 Á, c = 5.7694Á and V = 331.15 Á3. The projected increase incell volume with substitution of 10 mole per cent Fe2SiO3 is1.66 per cent. A regular increase in the Fe2O3 content of sillimanite withincreasing Fe2O3 content of associated ilmenite in 15 of 21samples analyzed suggests that sillimanite and ilmenite crystallizedin equilibrium in the 15 samples. The compositions of the tensillimanite-ilmenite pairs analyzed by the author fit the followingempirical curve (sol;(XFe2O3)Il = 1.110 x 10–3. This regularincrease in Fe2O3 contents fits a model of Fe3+ substitutionfor Al on two independent sites in sillimanite and a coupledsubstitution of for Fe2+ Ti on two sites in ilmenite. Sillimaniteand ilmenite are behaving as ideal solutions over the compositionalrange 0 < XFe2SIO3 < 0.013 in sillimanite and 0 < XFe2O3< 0.15 in ilmenite. Equations have been derived for expressing the variation inFe2O3 content of sillimanite associated with quartz and ilmeniteor hematite as a function of pressure, temperature, and Fe2O3content of the oxide minerals. For example, the Fe2O3 contentof a sillimanite with 1.5 mole per cent Fe2SiO3 coexisting withTi-free hematite is calculated to decrease 11 per cent witha 5 kb increase in pressure. The rate of increase with temperatureof the Fe2O3 content of sillimanite is greater in hematite-bearingassemblages than in ilmenite-bearing assemblages.  相似文献

Local surface travel needs in the Peoples Republic of China (mainlandChina) have traditionally been met largely by nonpolluting bicycles. A majorautomobile manufacturing/importing effort has begun in the country over thelast decade, and planning documents indicate that the Chinese may strive toacquire more than 100 million vehicles early in the next century. By analogywith large automotive fleets already existing in the western world, bothregional and global scale pollution effects are to be expected from theincrease. The present work adopts the latest projections of Chinese automobilemanufacture and performs some quantitative assessments of the extent ofpollution generation.Focus for the investigation is placed upon the oxidant ozone. Emissions of theprecursor species nitrogen oxides and volatile organics are constructed basedon data for the current automotive sector in the eastern portion of the UnitedStates. Ozone production is first estimated from measured values forcontinental/oceanic scale yields relative to precursor oxidation. Theestimates are then corroborated through idealized two dimensional modeling ofthe photochemistry taking place in springtime air flow off the Asian land massand toward the Pacific Ocean. The projected fleet sizes could increase coastaland remote oceanic ozone concentrations by tens of parts per billion (ppb)in the lower troposphere. Influences on the tropospheric aerosol system andon the major greenhouse gas carbon dioxide are treated peripherally. Nitrogenoxides created during the vehicular internal combustion process willcontribute to nitrate pollution levels measured in the open Pacific. Thepotential for soot and fugitive dust increases should be considered as theautomotive infrastructure develops. Since the emerging Chinese automotivetransportation system will represent a substantial addition to the globalfleet and all the carbon in gasoline is eventually oxidized completely, asignificant rise in global carbon dioxide inputs will ensue as well.Some policy issues are treated preliminary. The assumption is made thatalterations to regional oxidant/aerosol systems and to terrestrial climate areconceivable. The likelihood that the Chinese can achieve the latest vehiclefleet goals is discussed, from the points of view of new production, positivepollution feedbacks from a growing automobile industry, and known petroleumreserves. Vehicular fuel and maintenance options lying before the Chinese areoutlines and compared. To provide some perspective on the magnitude of theenvironmental changes associated with an Asian automotive buildup, recentestimates of the effects of future air traffic over the Pacific Rim aredescribed.  相似文献

This paper presents a revised glacial chronology for the Lahul Himalaya and provides the most detailed reconstruction of former glacier extents in the western Himalayas published to date. On the basis of detailed geomorphological mapping, morphostratigraphy, and absolute and relative dating, three glaciations and two glacial advances are constrained. The oldest glaciation (Chandra glacial stage) is represented by glacially eroded benches and drumlins (the first to be described from the Himalaya) at altitudes of >4300 m and indicates glaciation on a landscape of broad valleys that had minimal fluvial incision. The second glaciation (Batal glacial stage) is represented by highly weathered and disssected lateral moraines and drumlins representing two phases of glaciation within the Batal glacial stage (Batal I and Batal II). The Batal stage was an extensive valley glaciation interrupted by a readvance that produced superimposed bedforms. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, indicates that glaciers probably started to retreat between 43400 ± 10300 and 36900 ± 8400 yr ago during the Batal stage. The Batal stage may be equivalent to marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 4 and early Oxygen Isotope Stage 3. The third glaciation (Kulti glacial stage), is represented by well-preserved moraines in the main tributary valleys that formed due to a less-extensive valley glaciation when ice advanced no more than 12 km from present ice margins. On the basis of an OSL age for deltaic sands and gravels that underlie tills of Kulti age, the Kulti glaciation is younger than 36900 ± 8400 yr ago. The development of peat bogs, having a basal age of 9160 ± 70 14C yr BP possibly represents a phase of climatic amelioration coincident with post-Kulti deglaciation. The Kulti glaciation, therefore, is probably equivalent to all or parts of late Oxygen Isotope Stage 3, Stage 2 and early Stage 1. Two minor advances (Sonapani I and II) are represented by small sharp-crested moraines within a few kilometres of glacier termini. On the basis of relative weathering, the Sonapani advance is possibly of early mid-Holocene age, whereas the Sonapani II advance is historical. The change in style and extent of glaciation is attributed to topographic controls produced by fluvial incision and by increasing aridity during the Quaternary. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An atmosphere–ocean climate box model is used to examine the influence of cloud feedback on the equilibria of the climate system. The model consists of three non-linear ordinary differential equations, which are simplified forms of the first law of thermodynamics for the atmosphere and ocean and the continuity equation for the atmospheric component of the hydrological cycle. The mass continuity equation expresses the cloud liquid water content as a function of the evaporation rate from the ocean surface and the precipitation rate. Cloud formation releases latent heat. The model clouds also absorb solar energy at a rate consistent with recent findings. The model simulates snow–ice albedo feedback, water vapour feedback and cloud feedback. The global mean precipitation and surface temperature are analysed as they respond to enhanced greenhouse warming. Model results show that cloud feedback can lead to the occurrence of multiple climate equilibria. Some of these are warmer than the present equilibrium, with increased precipitation, while others are colder, with reduced precipitation. If the cloud feedback is weak, enhanced greenhouse forcing leads to a small alteration of the present equilibrium. If the cloud feedback is strong enough, the climate system can be forced into a warmer and wetter equilibrium.  相似文献

Following the Painted Cave Fire of 25 June 1990 in Santa Barbara, California which burned 1214 ha, an emergency watershed protection plan was implemented consisting of stream clearing, grade stabilizers and construction of debris basins. Research was initiated focusing on hydrological response and channel morphology changes on two branches of Maria Ygnacio Creek, the main drainage of the burned area. Research results support the hypothesis that the response of small drainage basins in chaparral ecosystems to wildfire is complex and flushing of sediment by fluvial processes is more likely than by high magnitude debris flows. During the winter of 1990–1991, 35–66 cm of rainfall and intensities up to 10 cm per hour for a five-minute period were recorded with a seasonal total of 100% of average (normal) rainfall (average=63 cm/year). During the winter of 1991–1992, 48–74 cm of rainfall and intensities up to 8 cm per hour were recorded with a seasonal total of 115% of normal. Even though there was moderate rainfall on barren, saturated soils, no major debris flows occurred in burned areas. The winter of 1992–1993 recorded total precipitation of about 170% of normal, annual average intensities were relatively low and again no debris flows were observed. The response to winter storms in the first three years following the fire was a moderate but spectacular flushing of sediment, most of which was derived from the hillslopes upstream of the debris basins. The first significant storm and stream flow of the 1990–1991 winter was transport-limited resulting in large volumes of sediment being deposited in the channel of Maria Ygnacio Creek; the second storm and stream flow was sediment-limited and the channel scoured. Debris basins trapped about 23 000 m3, the majority coming from the storm of 17–20 March 1991. Sediment transported downstream during the three winters following the fire and not trapped in the debris basins was eventually flushed to the estuarine reaches of the creeks below the burn area, where approximately 108 000 m3 accumulated. Changes in stream morphology following the fire were dramatic as pools filled with sediment which greatly smoothed longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles. Major changes in channel morphology occur following a fire as sediment derived from the hillslope is temporarily stored in channels within the burned area. However, this sediment may quickly move downstream of the burned region, where it may accumulate reducing channel capacity and increasing the flood hazard. Ecological consequences of wildfire to the riparian zone of streams in the chaparral environment are virtually unknown, but must be significant as the majority of sediment (particularly gravel necessary for fish and other aquatic organisms) entering the system does so in response to fires. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Rock samples from the Kanin Peninsula and the Timan Ridge were analysed for in situ cosmogenic 10Be for exposure age dating purposes. Crystalline rocks were sampled at four sites on the Kanin Peninsula, either from bedrock outcrops or from glacial erratics, giving overall similar 10Be ages. Outcropping sandstone and crystalline erratics were available from three sites at the Timan Ridge. The highly weathered sandstone gives substantially younger 10Be ages than the adjacent erratics. The exposure ages from the Kanin Peninsula suggest that the last deglaciation of this area took place between 55 and 37 10Be kyr ago, in agreement with a preceding Kara Sea glaciation (55-45 kyr BP). The northwest coast of the peninsula was probably just outside the maximum limit of the last Scandinavian glaciation (20-17 kyr BP). Glacial erratic exposure ages from the Timan Ridge suggest that the 55-45 kyr BP Kara Sea glaciation reached the northern part of the ridge. The exposure dates do not show conclusive evidence regarding the existence of a Timan Ridge ice cap.  相似文献

WILBUR AND ME     
ABSTRACT. Wilbur Zelinsky has spent his spectacular scholarly career enhancing our understanding of American life through explorations into the nation's cultural geography. Although he has illuminated grand themes, he is also celebrated for his eclectic work on the geography of Americana. Few, however, may appreciate his lifelong enjoyment of American literature. Early in my scholarly journey, Wilbur encouraged my awakening interest in reading widely, beyond the boundaries of professional literature. Conversations with him about shared literary enthusiasms affirmed my reading proclivities. From classic novels to those of minor authors, commentary by journalists, biographies, and mass‐market fiction, literature offers provocative insights into American life and landscape. Reading widely takes one in unforeseen professional directions and yields unexpected rewards. Wilbur's sheer delight with the phenomena of the American scene, however seemingly trivial, instructs us to not overlook their possible geographical significance.  相似文献
