The bright comet Hale–Bopp provided the first opportunity to follow the outgassing rates of a number of molecular species over a large range of heliocentric distances. We present the results of our observing campaign at radio wavelengths which began in August 1995 and ended in January 2002. The observations were carried out with the telescopes of Nançay, IRAM, JCMT, CSO and, since September 1997, SEST. The lines of nine molecules (OH, CO, HCN, CH3OH, H2CO, H2S, CS, CH3CN and HNC) were monitored. CS, H2S, H2CO, CH3CN were detected up to rh= 3–4 AU from the Sun, while HCN and CH3OH were detected up to 6 AU. CO, which is the main driver of cometary activity at heliocentric distances larger than 3–4 AU, was last detected in August 2001, at rh= 14 AU. The gas production rates obtained from this programme contain important information on the nature of cometary ices, their thermal properties and sublimation mechanisms.Line shapes allow to measure gas expansion velocities, which, at large heliocentric distances, might be directly connected to the temperature of the nucleus surface. Inferred expansion velocity of the gas varied as rh -0.4 within 7 AU from the Sun, but remained close to 0.4 km s-1 further away. The CO spectra obtained at large rhare strongly blueshifted and indicative of an important day-to-night asymmetry in outgassing and expansion velocity. The kinetic temperature of the coma, estimated from the relative intensities of the CH3OH and CO lines, increased with decreasing rh, from about 10 K at 7 AU to 110 K around perihelion.  相似文献

Following several recommendations presented by the Astrophysics Decadal Survey 2010 centered around the need to define “a future ultraviolet-optical space capability”, on 2012 May 25, NASA issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking persuasive ultraviolet (UV) and visible wavelength astrophysics science investigations. The goal was to develop a cohesive and compelling set of science objectives that motivate and support the development of the next generation of ultraviolet/visible space astrophysics missions. Responses were due on 10 August 2012 when 34 submissions were received addressing a number of potential science drivers. A UV/visible Mission RFI Workshop was held on 2012 September 20 where each of these submissions was summarized and discussed in the context of each other. We present a scientific analysis of these submissions and presentations and the pursuant measurement capability needs, which could influence ultraviolet/visible technology development plans for the rest of this decade. We also describe the process and requirements leading to the inception of this community RFI, subsequent workshop and the expected evolution of these ideas and concepts for the remainder of this decade.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the transformation of wave skewness and asymmetry as waves propagate obliquely over low-crested breakwaters, (LCBs), based on an analysis of measurements collected in the DELOS project. Considering the effect of the local Ursell number on wave asymmetries, a set of practical empirical formulae were established using least squares regression for both smooth and rubble mound LCBs. Predictions are in good agreement with measurements. Wave skewness on both sides of LCBs is linearly correlated for rubble mound LCBs but weakly correlated for smooth LCBs. While wave asymmetry on both sides of LCBs has a weakly quadratic correlation. The effect of the relative freeboard on the relationships of wave asymmetries between both sides is significant for rubble mound LCBs, but the same does not hold for smooth LCBs. With the presence of LCBs, wave skewness retains a positive sign on both sides but asymmetry changes from negative on the incident side to positive on the transmission side. Bispectral analysis shows that positive skewness and negative asymmetry arises from self–self and sum interactions but positive asymmetry is due to difference interactions between frequencies. The findings provide improved understanding of changes in wave skewness and asymmetry in the vicinity of structures, which may help mitigate scour and improve the stability of breakwaters.  相似文献

An integrated provenance study using provenance-sensitive heavy mineral ratios, mineral chemistry and U/Pb dating of detrital zircons has revealed significant changes in sediment provenance during deposition of the Early to Middle Jurassic succession in the Heidrun Field, offshore Mid-Norway. The variations result from the interplay of two source regions, one of which was located on the Norwegian landmass and the other on the conjugate East Greenland margin. Sediment sourced from central East Greenland is distinguished by high garnet:zircon, high rutile:zircon, low chrome spinel:zircon, garnet assemblages rich in low-Ca, high-Mg varieties, and zircon populations that include an Archean group, a diverse range of Early–Middle Proterozoic grains, and an Early Paleozoic group. These features indicate derivation from a high-grade (granulite facies) metasedimentary terrain together with Archean basement and Early Paleozoic granitoids. Norwegian-sourced sandstones differ by having lower garnet:zircon and rutile:zircon, variable chrome spinel:zircon, garnet assemblages scarce in low-Ca, high-Mg varieties, and zircon populations that lack an Archean group. Derivation from the Caledonian Nappe Domain, comprising metasediments (predominantly at amphibolite facies), ophiolites and Early Paleozoic granitoids, is indicated. Initially, during deposition of the non-marine lower part of the Åre Formation (Hettangian–Sinemurian), sediment was fed from the west, but in the upper (tidally influenced) part of the Åre Formation (Sinemurian–Pliensbachian), Norwegian-sourced material appears. Greenland-derived material disappears in the subsequent Tilje Formation (Pliensbachian), with the Tilje and subsequent Ror and Ile Formations (Toarcian–Aalenian) being predominantly sourced from the east. The regional regression at the base of the Garn Formation (Bajocian) was accompanied by a switch in provenance, with Greenland-derived material replacing sediment sourced from Norway. Variations in mineralogy offer a framework for correlation on both local and sub-regional scales.  相似文献

In this paper, a methodology for the selection of statistical models for describing the extreme wave heights on the basis of resampling techniques is presented. Two such techniques are evaluated: the jackknife and the bootstrap. The methods are applied to two high-quality datasets of wave measurements in the Mediterranean and one from the East Coast of the USA. The robustness of the estimates of the extreme values of wave heights at return periods important for coastal engineering design is explored further. In particular, we demonstrate how an ensemble error norm can be used to select the most appropriate extreme probability model from a choice of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs). This error norm is based on the mean error norm of the optimised CDF for each resampled (replicate) data series. The resampling approach is also used to present confidence intervals of the CDF parameters. We provide a brief discussion of the sensitivity of these parameters and the suitability of each model in terms of uncertainty with resampling techniques. The advantages of resampling are outlined, and the superiority of the bootstrap over the jackknife in quantifying the uncertainty of extreme quantiles is demonstrated for these records.  相似文献

Pump‐and‐treat (P&T) is a widely applied remedy for groundwater remediation at many types of sites for multiple types of contaminants. Decisions regarding major changes in the remediation approach are an important element of environmental remediation management for a site using P&T. While existing guidance documents provide information on design, operation, and optimization for P&T systems, these documents do not provide specific technical guidance to support remedy decisions regarding when to transition to a new remedy or to initiate closure of the P&T remedy. A structured approach for P&T performance assessment was developed and is described herein, using analysis of three example P&T systems. These examples highlight key aspects of the performance assessment decision logic and represent assessment outcomes associated with optimizing the P&T system, transitioning from P&T to natural attenuation, and supplementing P&T with another technology to hasten transition to natural attenuation.  相似文献

岩溶研究中,通常会使用高分辨率卫星图像和地理空间数据识别、描绘岩溶发育及相关地质灾害发生的地貌特征。本文旨在利用ArcGIS10.0确定干涉合成孔径雷达数字高程模型(IFSAR-DEM)识别、量化和描述岩溶洼地。这种半自动岩溶洼地/天坑探测方法采用水流模拟法,并结合(1)流域划分;(2)下沉填充法提取洼地特征;(3)下沉深度测量及分类;(4)使用2013年至2014年谷歌高光谱卫星图像和数字地形模型对探测到的岩溶洼地进行验证。该方法已在薄荷省旁劳市进行的评估中进行了预测试。使用国家测绘资源信息局(菲律宾)1991年的1:50 000比例尺地形图进行的初步封闭洼地分析,发现旁劳岛有15个天坑。利用5米高分辨率IFSAR-DEM,共探测到820个天坑,其中424个根据详细的地面实况进行了描绘,以验证了岩溶洼地的存在。地表实况包含天坑大小、形状和深度等基本形态测量分析以消除误报数据。阈值设定为沉降深度大于1米,孔径大于10米,从而最大程度精确区分实际的天坑。这种基于GIS的工具有助于生成高分辨率岩溶塌陷易发区图,继而指导当地规划者、工程师及决策者进行开发规划和土地利用。   相似文献

Site closure for soil vacuum extraction (SVE) application typically requires attainment or specified soil concentration standards based on the premise that mass flux from the vadose zone to ground water not result in levels exceeding maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). Unfortunately, realization of MCLs in ground water may not be attainable at many sites. This results in soil remediation efforts that may be in excess of what is necessary for future protection of ground water and soil remediation goals which often cannot be achieved within a reasonable time period. Soil venting practitioners have attempted to circumvent these problems by basing closure on some predefined percent total mass removal, or an approach to a vapor concentration asymptote. These approaches, however, are subjective and influenced by venting design. We propose an alternative strategy based on evaluation of five components: (1) site characterization, (2) design. (3) performance monitoring, (4) rule-limited vapor transport, and (5) mass flux to and from ground water. Demonstration of closure is dependent on satisfactory assessment of all five components. The focus of this paper is to support mass flux evaluation. We present a plan based on monitoring of three subsurface zones and develop an analytical one-dimensional vertical flux model we term VFLUX. VFLUX is a significant improvement over the well-known numerical one-dimensional model. VLEACH, which is often used for estimation of mass flux to ground water, because it allows for the presence of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in soil, degradation, and a lime-dependent boundary condition at the water table inter-face. The time-dependent boundary condition is the center-piece of our mass flux approach because it dynamically links performance of ground water remediation lo SVE closure. Progress or lack of progress in ground water remediation results in either increasingly or decreasingly stringent closure requirements, respectively.  相似文献

A model predicting suspension-feeding bivalve biomass and its interactions with water quality has been developed and coupled with the Chesapeake Bay Eutrophication Model. This coupling included deposition of filtered particulate matter to the sediments and the recycling of inorganic nutrients back to the water column. Because individual size is a crucial determinant of bivalve filtration and respiration rates, an empirical function, was developed from data, relating computed areal biomass to size, which was then used to adjust these rates during the simulation. Biomass was strongly related to the eutrophication model's predictions of organic and total solids distributions, as well as to bottom water dissolved oxygen. The tight coupling between seasonal organic matter concentration and biomass suggested that food, or the ability of suspension feeders to ingest it given present total solids loadings, is a limiting factor baywide. Hypoxia and anoxia also reduced benthic biomass in affected locations. High site-specific temporal variability observed in the data may contain a large component of spatial patchiness, on scales below which the present estuarine eutrophication model could resolve. Further insights will be needed to incorporate the effects of patchiness, as well as other important spatial and temporal signals, such as predation and recruitment.  相似文献
