In this, the third in a series of three papers concerning the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey, we describe the astrometric properties of the data base. We describe the algorithms employed in the derivation of the astrometric parameters of the data, and demonstrate their accuracies by comparison with external data sets using the first release of data, the South Galactic Cap survey. We show that the celestial coordinates, which are tied to the International Celestial Reference Frame via the Tycho–2 reference catalogue, are accurate to better than ±0.2 arcsec at J , R ∼19,18 , rising to ±0.3 arcsec at J , R ∼22,21 , with positional-dependent systematic effects from bright to faint magnitudes at the ∼0.1-arcsec level. The proper motion measurements are shown to be accurate to typically ±10 mas yr−1 at J , R ∼19,18 , rising to ±50 mas yr−1 at J , R ∼22,21 , and are tied to zero using the extragalactic reference frame. We show that the zero-point errors in the proper motions are ≤1 mas yr−1 for R >17 , and are no larger than ∼10 mas yr−1 for R <17 mas yr−1 .  相似文献

We describe observations carried out by the MOA group of the Galactic bulge during 2000 that were designed to detect efficiently gravitational microlensing of faint stars in which the magnification is high and/or of short duration. These events are particularly useful for studies of extrasolar planets and faint stars. Approximately 17 deg2 were monitored at a sampling rate of up to six times per night. The images were analysed in real time using a difference imaging technique. 20 microlensing candidates were detected, of which eight were alerted to the microlensing community whilst in progress. Approximately half of the candidates had high magnifications (≳10), at least one had very high magnification (≳50), and one exhibited a clear parallax effect. The details of these events are reported here, together with details of the on-line difference imaging technique. Some nova-like events were also observed and these are described, together with one asteroid.  相似文献

When a satellite orbit decaying slowly under the action of air drag experiences 15th-order resonance with the Earth's gravitational field, so that the ground track repeats after 15 rev, the orbital eccentricity may suffer appreciable changes due to perturbations from the gravitational harmonics of order 15 and even degree (16, 18, 20…). In this paper the changes in eccentricity at resonance for six satellites in near-circular orbits at inclinations between 56 and 90° have been analysed to derive 11 pairs of equations linking the harmonic coefficients of order 15 and (even) degree l, Cl,15andSl,15 in the usual notation. High angular-resolution measurements of directional fluxes of solar particles in space have been obtained with detectors aboard OGO-5 during the cosmic ray event of 18 November 1968. This is the only case on record for which sharply-defined directional observations of protons and electrons covering a wide rigidity range (0.3 MV to 1.5 GV) are available.The satellite experiment provided data for determining pitch-angle distributions with respect to the direction of the local interplanetary magnetic field lines during the lengthy highly anisotropic phase of the event. It was found that the unidirectional differential intensities j(θ) of 3- to 25-MeV protons varied in accordance with the relationship j(θ) = b0 + b1cosθ + b2cos2θ, where b0 and b1 ? 0, and b2, is positive, zero or negative. Soon after onset, 79–266-keV electrons arriving from the direction of the Sun displayed an anisotropic component with the intensity varying as cos θ. Later, a double-peaked distribution appeared at the lower energies, whereas the flux at the upper end of the range covered by the experiment became isotropic. These results have been interpreted in the light of the temporal flux profiles and the state of the interplanetary medium.The observation of the unusually large and long-lasting anisotropies lead to several conclusions including: (1) If injection of the solar particles was instantaneous, the diffusion coefficient was either constant or increasing with distance from the Sun. (2) If the solar source emitted particles over an extended period, and there is evidence to that effect, there was weak scattering in the region between the Sun and the Earth and a strong scattering region beyond the Earth's orbit. (3) Solar electrons were stored near the Sun. (4) The observed angular distribution of 200-MV protons in the magnetosheath was in good agreement with that deduced in an earlier analysis of polar orbiting satellite observations and trajectory calculations.  相似文献

A meteorite, named for the location of its discovery near Lone Tree, Iowa, was found by Loren Westfall in May 1971. Electron microprobe and petrographic studies reveal its mineral composition to be olivine, low-calcium clinopyroxene, high-calcium clinopyroxene, troilite, kamacite, taenite and iron oxides. On the basis of texture, olivine composition (19% Fa), low-calcium clinopyroxene composition (17% Fs, 2% Wo) and metal (determined by modal analysis), this meteorite is classified as an H group bronzite chondrite. While it has characteristics of classes 3 and 4 (Van Schmus and Wood, 1967, Table 2) it fits class 4 better since low-calcium pyroxene has a MD of 5.6%, olivine has a MD of 3.2%, turbid glass is present in chondrules, feldspar is absent, and the matrix is opaque. The opacity of the matrix may be due to iron oxides in microfractures in a microcrystalline matrix.  相似文献

New radio and X-ray data are reported for the rich cluster Abell 2319. This object is known from optical data to consist of two separate clusters, which are displaced by about 10′ in the NW direction, and could be in a pre-merger state.

In the radio domain, the cluster is characterized by the presence of a central diffuse halo source, more extended and powerful than the prototype halo in the Coma cluster. The radio halo shows an irregular structure, elongated in the NE-SW direction, and also extended towards the NW. We also report data on the extended radio galaxies located within the halo, or in its proximity.

The cluster X-ray brightness distribution shows an elongated structure towards the NW, in the radial region between 6′–12′, i.e. in the direction of the subcluster. This feature is exactly coincident with the NW extension of the radio halo. In addition, more substructural features are identified which could be due to an ongoing merger of the cluster with yet another mass component.

The radio halo morphology is correlated with the X-ray structure and the existence of merger processes in the cluster. The cluster merger can provide energy to maintain the radio halo, while the origin of the relativistic particles seems more problematic.  相似文献

Abstract— The Monahans H‐chondrite is a regolith breccia containing light and dark phases and the first reported presence of small grains of halite. We made detailed noble gas analyses of each of these phases. The 39Ar‐40Ar age of Monahans light is 4.533 ± 0.006 Ma. Monahans dark and halite samples show greater amounts of diffusive loss of 40Ar and the maximum ages are 4.50 and 4.33 Ga, respectively. Monahans dark phase contains significant concentrations of He, Ne and Ar implanted by the solar wind when this material was extant in a parent body regolith. Monahans light contains no solar gases. From the cosmogenic 3He, 21Ne, and 38Ar in Monahans light we calculate a probable cosmic‐ray, space exposure age of 6.0 ± 0.5 Ma. Monahans dark contains twice as much cosmogenic 21Ne and 38Ar as does the light and indicates early near‐surface exposure of 13–18 Ma in a H‐chondrite regolith. The existence of fragile halite grains in H‐chondrites suggests that this regolith irradiation occurred very early. Large concentrations of 36Ar in the halite were produced during regolith exposure by neutron capture on 35Cl, followed by decay to 36Ar. The thermal neutron fluence seen by the halite was (2–4) × 1014 n/cm2. The thermal neutron flux during regolith exposure was ~0.4‐0.7 n/cm2/s. The Monahans neutron fluence is more than an order of magnitude less than that acquired during space exposure of several large meteorites and of lunar soils, but the neutron flux is lower by a factor of ≤5. Comparison of the 36Arn/21Necos ratio in Monahans halite and silicate with the theoretically calculated ratio as a function of shielding depth in an H‐chondrite regolith suggests that irradiation of Monahans dark occurred under low shielding in a regolith that may have been relatively shallow. Late addition of halite to the regolith can be ruled out. However, irradiation of halite and silicate for different times at different depths in an extensive regolith cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Abstract— Data on the trajectory and orbit of an extremely bright bolide (superbolide) over Greenland on 1997 December 9 are given, and circumstances of the phenomenon and its observations are described. A surveillance video camera and satellite‐based records enabled computing the trajectory and orbit independently of visual sightings of casual observers. The superbolide body of about 36 000 kg penetrated the atmosphere with an initial velocity of 30.5 ± 1.7 km s?1. Its orbit was a long‐period orbit and seems to be at variance with the low value of ablation coefficient (0.017 kg MJ?1) derived from modeling the atmospheric trajectory. However, such an event has been documented previously. Also the intensity and brevity of the satellite‐detected light flares are highly unusual. The impact area of the main hypothetical remnant of the body is given. Search for meteorites was performed. No meteorites were recovered. Also analysis of snow samples gave no hint of meteoritic dust.  相似文献

Abstract— Spectra of asteroid 4 Vesta and 21 small (estimated diameters less than 10 km) asteroids with Vesta‐like spectral properties (Vestoids) were measured at visible and near‐infrared wavelengths (~0.44 to ~1.65 μm). All of the measured small asteroids (except for 2579 Spartacus) have reflectance spectra consistent with surface compositions similar to eucrites and howardites and consistent with all being derived from Vesta. None of the observed asteroids have spectra similar to diogenites. We find no spectral distinction between the 15 objects tabulated as members of the Vesta dynamical family and 6 of the 7 sampled “non‐family” members that reside just outside the semi‐major axis (a), eccentricity (e), and inclination (i) region of the family. The spectral consistency and close orbital (a‐e‐i) match of these “non‐family” objects to Vesta and the Vesta family imply that the true bounds of the family extend beyond the subjective cut‐off for membership. Asteroid 2579 Spartacus has a spectrum consistent with a mixture of eucritic material and olivine. Spartacus could contain olivine‐rich material from Vesta's mantle or may be unrelated to Vesta altogether. Laboratory measurements of the spectra of eucrites show that samples having nearly identical compositions can display a wide range of spectral slopes. Finer particle sizes lead to an increase in the slope, which is usually referred to as reddening. This range of spectral variation for the best‐known meteoritic analogs to the Vestoids, regardless of whether they are actually related to each other, suggests that the extremely red spectral slopes for some Vestoids can be explained by very fine‐grained eucritic material on their surfaces.  相似文献
