Mud islands in the Fly River estuary were deposited under dominantly brackish conditions. Changes in C/S ratio with depth in sediment cores reflect geomorphic development of islands and/or changes in location of river channels. An unusual feature of the C/S relationships is positive carbon-axis intercepts, indicating the presence of an organic phase that is resistant to decomposition. Nonzero intercepts mean that the slope of the C/S plot, and not individual C/S values, must be used to determine paleoenvironments. Moreover, a nonzero intercept may be useful for indicating proximity to a source of refractory carbon, such as mangroves.  相似文献

Factors that maintain genetic and species diversity may act in concert in natural ecosystems. Here, we investigate correlations between genetic diversity (in eight salt marsh species) and community species diversity. A significant positive correlation existed between genetic diversity and species richness, although the relationship was not significant for any species individually. Nonetheless, four of the eight comparisons showed strong positive relationships between genetic and species diversity. Additionally, several abiotic variables were used in a model selection procedure to determine what site-level characteristics might drive differences in genetic diversity in this system. The rate of larval influx, as measured by barnacle abundance on Spartina alterniflora, was the strongest predictor of site-level genetic diversity in our samples. Our results suggest that estuarine management efforts should consider recruitment rates when selecting areas for protection.  相似文献

An analysis of the intra-annual variability of hydrographic residence times, tau, is presented for the Pontevedra Ria--a large coastal system in NW Spain with a deep, unobstructed connection with the Atlantic Ocean. Ria-offshore water exchange and tau were quantified with an iterative approach to the fraction of freshwater method using 23 quasi-steady state water-salt budgets. Excluding prolonged flushing due to downwelling events at the end of the upwelling season, mean was 6 +/- 2 day in the central ria and 2 +/- 1 day in the internal ria. The tidal contribution, equal to 10-25% of total water renewal, was quantified for the first time for a Galician ria with the hydrodynamic model estuarine contaminant simulator (ECoS). The relationship between tau and residual freshwater input, Qz, was atypical, since Qz played a minor role in water exchange in comparison to periodic upwelling of East North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) from the continental shelf mainly during spring and summer. During positive upwelling stress, the intrusion of ENACW into the ria produced enhanced flushing and tau < 4 day in the central ria and < 2 days in the internal ria. Under downwelling favourable conditions, water was retained and tau prolonged to >8 and >5 days, respectively. A quantitative parameterisation of tau with upwelling and Qz was weakly significant, due to the short-term variability in ria salinity. This paper elucidates problems associated with the use of water budgets to transient coastal systems such as the Pontevedra Ria.  相似文献

A thorough geostatistical data analysis includes a careful study of how the data's second-order variation, as characterized by the semivariogram, depends on the relative orientation of data locations. If the semivariogram depends on only the (Euclidean) distance between locations, then the semivariogram is isotropic; otherwise, it is anisotropic. In this article, I take another look at the modeling of anisotropy in geostatistics. A new, more specific classification of types of anisotropy is proposed. More importantly, some heretofore inadequately understood implications of the dependence of various semivariogram attributes on direction are discussed, and the wisdom of some current practices for modeling the direction-dependence of these attributes is questioned.  相似文献

Hydrogeophysical methods are presented that support the siting and monitoring of aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) systems. These methods are presented as numerical simulations in the context of a proposed ASR experiment in Kuwait, although the techniques are applicable to numerous ASR projects. Bulk geophysical properties are calculated directly from ASR flow and solute transport simulations using standard petrophysical relationships and are used to simulate the dynamic geophysical response to ASR. This strategy provides a quantitative framework for determining site‐specific geophysical methods and data acquisition geometries that can provide the most useful information about the ASR implementation. An axisymmetric, coupled fluid flow and solute transport model simulates injection, storage, and withdrawal of fresh water (salinity ~500 ppm) into the Dammam aquifer, a tertiary carbonate formation with native salinity approximately 6000 ppm. Sensitivity of the flow simulations to the correlation length of aquifer heterogeneity, aquifer dispersivity, and hydraulic permeability of the confining layer are investigated. The geophysical response using electrical resistivity, time‐domain electromagnetic (TEM), and seismic methods is computed at regular intervals during the ASR simulation to investigate the sensitivity of these different techniques to changes in subsurface properties. For the electrical and electromagnetic methods, fluid electric conductivity is derived from the modeled salinity and is combined with an assumed porosity model to compute a bulk electrical resistivity structure. The seismic response is computed from the porosity model and changes in effective stress due to fluid pressure variations during injection/recovery, while changes in fluid properties are introduced through Gassmann fluid substitution.  相似文献

A recent conceptual model links higher bulk conductivities at hydrocarbon impacted sites to higher total dissolved solids (TDS) resulting from enhanced mineral weathering due to acids produced during biodegradation. In this study, we evaluated the above model by investigating the vertical distribution of bulk conductivity, TDS, and specific conductance in groundwater. The results showed higher TDS at contaminated locations consistent with the above model. Further, steep vertical gradients in bulk conductivity and TDS suggest vertical and spatial heterogeneity at the site. We observed that at fluid conductivities <40 mS/m, bulk conductivity was inversely related to fluid conductivity, but at fluid conductivities >40 mS/m, bulk conductivity increased with increasing fluid conductivity. However, at fluid conductivities >80 mS/m, bulk conductivities increased without a corresponding increase in fluid conductivity, resulting in a poor correlation between bulk conductivity and fluid conductivity for the contaminated samples. This suggests that electrolytic conductivity was not completely responsible for the observed variability in bulk conductivity. We suggest two possible reasons for the inverse relationship at low fluid conductivity and poor positive correlation at high fluid conductivity: (1) geochemical heterogeneity due to biological processes not captured at a scale comparable to the bulk conductivity measurement and (2) variability in the surface conductivity, consistent with a simple petrophysical model that suggests higher surface conductivity for contaminated sediments. We conclude that biodegradation processes can impact both electrolytic and surface conduction properties of contaminated sediments and these two factors can account for the higher bulk conductivities observed in sediments impacted by hydrocarbon.  相似文献
