In the seasonally stratified Gulf of Aqaba Red Sea, both release by phytoplankton and oxidation by nitrifying microbes contributed to the formation of a primary nitrite maximum (PNM) over different seasons and depths in the water column. In the winter and during the days immediately following spring stratification, formation was strongly correlated (R2 = 0.99) with decreasing irradiance and chlorophyll, suggesting that incomplete reduction by light limited phytoplankton was a major source of . However, as stratification progressed, continued to be generated below the euphotic depth by microbial oxidation, likely due to differential photoinhibition of and oxidizing populations. Natural abundance stable nitrogen isotope analyses revealed a decoupling of the δ15N and δ18O in the combined and pool, suggesting that assimilation and nitrification were co-occurring in surface waters. As stratification progressed, the δ15N of particulate N below the euphotic depth increased from −5‰ to up to +20‰.N uptake rates were also influenced by light; based on 15N tracer experiments, assimilation of , , and urea was more rapid in the light (434 ± 24, 94 ± 17, and 1194 ± 48 nmol N L−1 day−1 respectively) than in the dark (58 ± 14, 29 ± 14, and 476 ± 31 nmol N L−1 day−1 respectively). Dark assimilation was 314 ± 31 nmol N L−1 day−1, while light assimilation was much faster, resulting in complete consumption of the 15N spike in less than 7 h from spike addition. The overall rate of coupled urea mineralization and oxidation (14.1 ± 7.6 nmol N L−1 day−1) was similar to that of oxidation alone (16.4 ± 8.1 nmol N L−1 day−1), suggesting that mineralization of labile dissolved organic N compounds like urea was not a rate limiting step for nitrification. Our results suggest that assimilation and nitrification compete for and that N transformation rates throughout the water column are influenced by light over diel and seasonal cycles, allowing phytoplankton and nitrifying microbes to contribute jointly to PNM formation. We identify important factors that influence the N cycle throughout the year, including light intensity, substrate availability, and microbial community structure. These processes could be relevant to other regions worldwide where seasonal variability in mixing depth and stratification influence the contributions of phytoplankton and non-photosynthetic microbes to the N cycle.  相似文献

In this study we present the results from realistic N -body modelling of massive star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. We have computed eight simulations with   N ∼ 105  particles; six of these were evolved for at least a Hubble time. The aim of this modelling is to examine in detail the possibility of large-scale core expansion in massive star clusters, and search for a viable dynamical origin for the radius–age trend observed for such objects in the Magellanic Clouds. We identify two physical processes which can lead to significant and prolonged cluster core expansion – mass-loss due to rapid stellar evolution in a primordially mass-segregated cluster, and heating due to a retained population of stellar mass black holes, formed in the supernova explosions of the most massive cluster stars. These two processes operate over different time-scales and during different periods of a cluster's life. The former occurs only at early times and cannot drive core expansion for longer than a few hundred Myr, while the latter typically does not begin until several hundred Myr have passed, but can result in core expansion lasting for many Gyr. We investigate the behaviour of each of these expansion mechanisms under different circumstances – in clusters with varying degrees of primordial mass segregation, and in clusters with varying black hole retention fractions. In combination, the two processes can lead to a wide variety of evolutionary paths on the radius–age plane, which fully cover the observed cluster distribution and hence define a dynamical origin for the radius–age trend in the Magellanic Clouds. We discuss in some detail the implications of core expansion for various aspects of globular cluster research, as well as the possibility of observationally inferring the presence of a significant population of stellar mass black holes in a cluster.  相似文献

Amberlite XAD-1 resin was examined to test its suitability for extracting organic complexes of copper, zinc and iron from seawater. At low flow rates and at loading capacities far below theoretical values, the adsorption of these metals is not reproducible and the results are reminiscent of the behaviour observed when the adsorption capacity is being exceeded or flow rates are too high. It is suggested that the resin also adsorbs small but significant amounts of inorganic ions from seawater and that this effect makes the resin unsuitable for quantitative measurements of trace metal speciation.  相似文献

We report on deep imaging of a remote M31 globular cluster, MGC1, obtained with Gemini/GMOS. Our colour–magnitude diagram for this object extends ∼5 mag below the tip of the red-giant branch and exhibits features consistent with an ancient metal-poor stellar population, including a long, well-populated horizontal branch. The red-giant branch locus suggests MGC1 has a metal abundance  [M/H]≈−2.3  . We measure the distance to MGC1 and find that it lies ∼160 kpc in front of M31 with a distance modulus  μ= 23.95 ± 0.06  . Combined with its large projected separation of   R p= 117 kpc  from M31, this implies a deprojected radius of   R gc= 200 ± 20 kpc  , rendering it the most isolated known globular cluster in the Local Group by some considerable margin. We construct a radial brightness profile for MGC1 and show that it is both centrally compact and rather luminous, with   MV =−9.2  . Remarkably, the cluster profile shows no evidence for a tidal limit and we are able to trace it to a radius of at least 450 pc, and possibly as far as ∼900 pc. The profile exhibits a power-law fall-off with exponent  γ=−2.5  , breaking to  γ=−3.5  in its outermost parts. This core-halo structure is broadly consistent with expectations derived from numerical models, and suggests that MGC1 has spent many gigayears in isolation.  相似文献

New seismic reflection profiles from the Tugrug basin in the Gobi‐Altai region of western Mongolia demonstrate the existence of preserved Mesozoic extensional basins by imaging listric normal faults, extensional growth strata, and partially inverted grabens. A core hole from this region recovered ca. 1600 continuous meters of Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous (Kimmeridgian–Berriasian) strata overlying Late Triassic volcanic basement. The cored succession is dominated by lacustrine and marginal lacustrine deposits ranging from stratified lacustrine, to subaqueous fan and delta, to subaerial alluvial‐fluvial environments. Multiple unconformities are encountered, and these represent distinct phases in basin evolution including syn‐extensional deposition and basin inversion. Prospective petroleum source and reservoir intervals occur, and both fluid inclusions and oil staining in the core provide evidence of hydrocarbon migration. Ties to correlative outcrop sections underscore that, in general, this basin appears to share a similar tectono‐stratigraphic evolution with petroliferous rift basins in eastern Mongolia and China. Nevertheless, some interesting contrasts to these other basins are noted, including distinct sandstone provenance, less overburden, and younger (Neogene) inversion structures. The Tugrug basin occupies an important but perplexing paleogeographic position between late Mesozoic contractile and extensional provinces. Its formation may record a rapid temporal shift from orogenic crustal thickening to extensional collapse in the Late Jurassic, and/or an accommodation zone with a Mesozoic strike‐slip component.  相似文献

Organic complexes of magnesium, iron, zinc and copper have been isolated from seawater by adsorption onto octadecylsilyl-modified silica (SEP-PAK cartridges). The compounds were fractionated by HPLC and metals were detected in the eluate by atomic fluorescence. The most polar fraction contained a significant proportion of the metal—organics but only a low percentage of the UV-absorbing (254 nm) material. Magnesium—organics of low polarity were found in deep (5000 m), water but the compounds do not seem to be derived from tetrapyrroles. There were large systematic variations in the chromatograms as the column aged and it is thought that free silanol groups were removing metals from the metal—organic complexes. The effect was most pronounced for magnesium. Inorganic metal ions can be adsorbed by columns containing capped or uncapped C18-bonded silica and the adsorption of metals is enhanced by treatment with methanol. The cation exchange capacities of chromatographic packings must be taken into account when metal—organic compounds are analysed by HPLC.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships are a fundamental tool for assessing populations and communities in fisheries science. Many researchers have collected length–weight data throughout New Zealand, yet parameters describing these relationships remain unpublished for many species of freshwater fish. We compiled 285,124 fish records from researchers and institutions across New Zealand to parameterise length–weight equations, using both power and quadratic models, for 53 freshwater species belonging to 13 families. The influence of location and sex on length–weight relationships was also assessed. Location, in particular, generated different length–weight relationships for 65% of the species examined. Length–weight equations were validated by comparing predicted weights against independently measured weights from 25 electrofished sites across New Zealand and the equations were highly accurate (R2>0.99). Recommendations are made about how to robustly apply this new resource which should assist freshwater fisheries researchers throughout New Zealand.  相似文献

Periphyton standing crop is often measured as chlorophyll a but there is increasing interest in using visual assessments of periphyton cover. Visual methods are rapid and require no sample analysis, but can be regarded as subjective with high inter-operator variability. We investigated variability in periphyton standing crop across operators, rivers and time, as determined visually and from chlorophyll a measurements. We found that visual assessments (comprising percentage cover estimates of up to eight periphyton categories) distinguished sites and occasions as effectively as chlorophyll a. Furthermore, an estimate of chlorophyll a could be derived from the visual assessments. Because our surveys were conducted in only three rivers, general applicability of the derivation of estimated chlorophyll a from the visual assessments warrants further investigation. The current recommendation of 20 views was sufficient for realistic visual assessments of average cover. Overall, our results indicated that inter-operator variability in visual assessments need not be a major concern, given adequate training.  相似文献
