Northern Norwegian shelf regions are highly productive, supporting fisheries rich in commercially important species such as cod, herring and capelin. It has been long recognized that the mesoscale jets, meanders and eddies associated with interactions between the North Atlantic Current, Norwegian Coastal Current and regional bottom topographic features such as troughs, banks and shelfbreaks play important roles in transporting and retaining zooplankton. To investigate zooplankton distributions and their correspondence with the physical fields, three large-scale surveys with mesoscale resolutions on physical and biological fields were conducted in northern Norwegian shelf regions between latitudes 68°15′N and 70°15′N in springs of 2000–2002. Survey results provide insights into the relationships between zooplankton distributions and the physical features such as fronts, the Norwegian Coastal Current and eddies related to topographic features. The physical and biological data are integrated and analyzed focusing on water types, estimation of geostrophic currents from direct current measurements, along-shelf transport of zooplankton, and retention of zooplankton by the mesoscale meander–eddy over a typical bank area on the shelf. The estimated mean transport in the upper 100 m on the shelf in the survey region is approximately 6.4×103 tonnes wet weight day−1 northward. High zooplankton abundances were found over both Malangsgrunnen and Sveinsgrunnen banks. The specific accumulation rate from northward–southward transport in the upper 100 m over Malangsgrunnen was approximately 0.08 day−1, while variable currents with an offshore gradient of zooplankton abundance over Sveinsgrunnen implies an offshore dispersion of coastal-originated zooplankton cohort. 相似文献

The dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory assumes that the feeding of an organism in relation to food density follows the type-II functional response when food consists of purely digestible organic matter. However when faced with a food source high in inorganic content, an organism needs to adapt physiologically to maximise organic extraction. Indeed filter-feeding marine bivalves inhabiting turbid coastal waters cope with large fluctuations in food quality by selectively ingesting and pseudofaeces production. Data from feeding experiments with the New Zealand greenshell mussel Perna canaliculus have demonstrated that inorganic particles contribute some uncertainty to the estimate of the half-saturation coefficient. We studied the time dynamics of a turbulent region excited by a moving surface vessel in a field experiment. The time dependences
of the geometrical sizes of the turbulent region are obtained, and it is shown that the time dependence of the width of the
turbulent wake at the initial stage is close to the power-law function with an exponent of 0.4 for different experiments (the
depth of the wake remaining practically constant). In the semiempirical turbulence theory, we suggested a qualitative model
describing the process of the initial expansion of a ship wake as a diffusion of a one-dimensional layer of turbulized liquid

Some regularities that are generally accepted in the theory about the development of sea coasts as applied to the East Arctic
coast of Russia do not conform to reality. To find out the reasons for these contradictions, the connection between the coastal
processes and the perennially frozen sediment of the underwater coastal slope in the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea
was studied. The frozen state of the deposits of the coastal zone exerts a substantial influence on the coastal dynamics and
determines several features of the thermoabrasion development. In particular, the subaqual permafrost does not allow the forming
of a storm profile with dynamic balance. This fact causes the more effective action of the sea on the coastal cliffs and the

The structure of the assemblages associated with the mussel aggregations of Bathymodiolus azoricus was investigated. The mussel beds were found on the hydrothermal vent fields on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (the Menez Gwen, Lucky
Strike, and Rainbow areas) at the depths of 850–2400 m. The community structure of the mussel bed assemblages varied between
the studied areas. Large number of species was unique to Menez Gwen mussel beds; the most observed taxa were not specialized
hydrothermal species. All the other, nonunique species were found for the Lucky Strike region. The lowest mussel assemblage
structure evenness was observed in the shallowest area, the Menez Gwen area (850 m depth). We assume that two types of mussel
assemblages—nematode-dominated and copepod-dominated ones—exist in the Lucky Strike field. The assemblages of B. azoricus differ significantly from the assemblages of B. thermophilus inhabiting the Pacific hydrothermal vents. 相似文献

The results of simulating the influence of an atmospheric fine structure on the characteristics of acoustic signals propagating
throughout the atmosphere for long distances from their sources are presented. A numerical model of an atmospheric fine inhomogeneous
structure within the height range z = 20…120 km is proposed to perform calculations. This model and its numerical parameters are based on the current notions
of the formation of an atmospheric fine structure due to internal gravity waves. The numerical calculations were performed
using the parabolic-equation method. A spatial structure of the acoustic field and the structure of an acoustic signal at
long distances from a pulsed source were calculated. It is shown that the presence of an atmospheric fine structure results
in a scattering of acoustic signals and their recording in the geometric shadow region. The results of calculations of signal
forms are in a satisfactory agreement with data on signals recorded in the geometric shadow region which is formed at a distance

A plane problem of free stationary gravitational waves in a horizontal current with vertical shear of the velocity is studied
in the linear statement. The determination of the parameters of waves is reduced to the solution of the Sturm–Liouville boundary-value
problem. For some vertical distributions of current velocity, we obtain analytic solutions. We propose a numerical algorithm
for finding the parameters of waves. On the basis of the performed analysis, we establish the possibility of existence of
stationary surface waves in currents for certain ranges of the Froude number. As the Froude number decreases, the waves become
shorter, which leads to a faster attenuation of waves disturbances with depth. Under the actual conditions, the waves are
short and suffer the influence of shear currents only in the subsurface layer of the ocean. 相似文献

A conceptual variant for constructing a computer database for the theory of wave processes in the World's Ocean is suggested.
Five basic model components have been singled out, namely, acoustic waves, surface waves, internal waves, gyroscopic waves,
and Rossby waves. The structure of each block is described. The main principle of organizing the databank consists in dividing
the entire variety of wave processes into categories and in generating a hierarchical system of models for each, category,
using the principle of transition from general to partial.
