This Research Note provides the first reliable figures on the numbers of seasonal workers from the Pacific Islands who participated in the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme between July 2007 and June 2022. The method for deriving these figures is explained briefly before examining the frequency of return by men and women for employment in subsequent seasons from the nine participating Pacific states. Clarification of the numbers of seasonal workers involved in the scheme, as distinct from work visas issued each year for RSE employment, is timely for two reasons. Firstly, the RSE scheme is under review in March 2023 by Immigration New Zealand. Secondly, the three major sources of Pacific seasonal labour are raising questions in 2023 about the impact of the scheme on their domestic labour markets and economies. Robust data on numbers of Pacific seasonal workers during the scheme's first 15 years contributes important information in both these contexts.  相似文献

Deformation studies require that geological bodies are kinematically moved along faults. Fault-parallel flow is one of a small number of kinematic restoration algorithms developed for this purpose. This scale-independent method describes how material nodes are displaced parallel to the fault plane, in the direction of fault movement. The one-dimensional strain of linear objects and two-dimensional strain of bodies within the hanging-wall during the restoration is shown for all cutoff angles and all angles of fault bends. A line moving over a fault bend is either shortened or extended depending on its initial orientation. However, the elongation of the line is significantly different under shortening and extension, with respect to the fault bend angle. The geometries of compressional fault systems, in which faults change angle by about 20 to 40°, generate low values of elongation. Modeling of extensional faults, which typically have steeper dips (60 to 80°) and therefore have tighter fault bends, causes high, unnatural values of elongation. The calculated strain ellipse ratios are directly proportional to the fault bend angle, corroborating the one-dimensional results. The fault-parallel flow method should be used primarily to kinematically restore and forward-model compressional faults, and other faults where the fault bend angles do not exceed 40°.  相似文献

The sandwich hybridisation assay (SHA) is a DNA probe‐based method for rapid identification and enumeration of toxic micro‐algae which uses species specific oligonucleotide probes targeted at ribosomal RNA. It is suited to fragile micro‐algal cells which commonly collapse during the fixation stage of sample collection, compromising identification by traditional microscopy. The assay has been available for research for several years, but was validated and accepted for international accreditation for commercial laboratory use in New Zealand in May 2004 (International Accreditation New Zealand: ISO 17025). During the validation of the raphidophyte assay, some discrepancies were noted between SHA cell concentration estimates and traditional light microscope cell counts. Higher SHA estimates were recorded when blooms had collapsed but rRNA was still present in sea water. Conversely, higher traditional cell counts occurred when sample delivery was delayed more than 48 h, presumably owing to degradation of rRNA in the live cultures used for the SHA. SHA cell concentration estimates of the toxic diatom bloom‐former Pseudo‐nitzschia australis were also compared with whole cell format DNA probe counts and traditional microscope counts; SHA counts were comparable for the three methods tested.  相似文献

The Otway Basin in the south of Victoria, Australia underwent three phases of deformation during breakup of the southern Australian margin. We assess the geometry and kinematics of faulting in the basin by analysing a 3‐D reflection seismic volume. Eight stratigraphic horizons and 24 SW‐dipping normal faults as well as subordinate antithetic faults were interpreted. This resulted in a high‐resolution geological 3‐D model (ca. 8 km × 7 km × 4 km depth) that we present as a supplementary 3‐D PDF (Data S1). We identified hard‐ and soft‐linking fault connections over the entire area, such as antithetic faults and relay ramps, respectively. Most major faults were continuously active from Early to Late Cretaceous, with two faults in the northern part of the study area active until at least the Oligocene. Allan maps of faults show tectonic activity continuously waned over this time period. Isopach maps of stratigraphic volumes quantify the amount of syn‐sedimentary movement that is characteristic of passive margins, such as the Otway Basin. We show that the faults possess strong corrugations (with amplitudes above the seismic resolution), which we illustrated by novel techniques, such as cylindricity and curvature. We argue that the corrugations are produced by sutures between sub‐vertical fault segments and this morphology was maintained during fault growth. Thus, they can be used to indicate the kinematics vector of the fault movement. This evidences, together with left‐stepping relay ramps, that 40% of the faults had a small component (up to 25°) of dextral oblique slip as well as normal (dip‐slip) movement.  相似文献

This paper provides the first detailed, multi-proxy environmental record for the character of Lateglacial conditions in the lowest Pleistocene terrace of the main valley floor of the River Trent at Holme Pierrepont near Nottingham. The analysis of pollen, plant, insect and mollusc remains preserved within organic channels near the base of the terrace, named the Holme Pierrepont Sand and Gravel by the British Geological Survey (historically known as the Floodplain Terrace), provided evidence of cool, though not fully arctic climatic conditions and a largely treeless landscape, roamed by large herbivores. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these sediments were deposited during the Loch Lomond Stadial (Younger Dryas GS-1). Comparison of these dates from Holme Pierrepont with those from morphostratigraphically similar deposits in the wider Trent catchment suggests that the Holme Pierrepont Sand and Gravel may have been laid down in two separate pulses of braidplain aggradation either side of the ‘Last Glacial Maximum’. It has been demonstrated from historical documentation and riverine archaeological evidence that the middle Trent has been particularly sensitive to changing flood frequency and magnitude associated with climatic oscillations during the late Holocene; this study demonstrates that such sensitivity appears to extend back into the late Pleistocene. The timing of fluvial aggradation recorded at Holme Pierrepont agrees broadly with that recorded from other sites across England and north-west Europe.  相似文献

The history of water is fundamental to understanding the geological evolution of Mars and to questions concerning the possible development of life on the Red Planet. Today, Mars is cold and dry; its regolith is permanently frozen and except under highly localised and transient conditions, liquid water is unstable at the surface. Intriguingly, we have identified geological features that could be markers of very late-Amazonian “wet” or ice-rich periglacial processes in Utopia and western Elysium Planitiae: 1. rimless, flat-floored and lobate, sometimes scalloped, depressions that are suggestive of terrestrial alases (evaporated/drained thermokarst lakes); 2. small-sized polygonal patterned-ground (perhaps formed by thermal-contraction cracking and possibly underlain by ice wedges); and, 3. circular/near-circular raised-rim depressions (consistent in morphology and scale with pingo-scars) that are nested in rimless depressions. In terrestrial cold-climate, non-glacial environments, landscape assemblages of this type occur only in the presence of ice-rich permafrost.Commenting upon the origin of the putative periglacial features on Mars, most workers have suggested that sublimation and not evaporation has been the dominant process. By contrast, we propose that two key characteristics of the rimless depressions – inner terraces and orthogonally-oriented polygons – are markers of stable, ponded water and its slow loss by evaporation or drainage. If the raised-rim landforms are pingo scars, then this also points to boundary conditions that are supportive of stable liquid water.With regard to the relative age of the features described above, previous work identified some lobate depressions superposed on crater-rim gullies in the region (Soare et al., 2007). Gullies could be amongst the youngest geological features on Mars; superposed depressions point to an origin that is more youthful than the gullies. In turn, as some raised-rim landforms are superposed on rimless depressions, this is indicative of an origin that is even more recent than that of the depressions. Together with the geological evidence showing that the rimless depressions could have been formed by ponded water, the stratigraphy of the putative periglacial-landscape in this region suggests that the very late Amazonian period could have been warmer and wetter than had been thought hitherto.  相似文献

Fractionation of silicon isotopes during biogenic silica dissolution   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Silicon isotopes have been investigated for their potential to reveal both past and present patterns of silicic acid utilization, primarily by diatoms, in surface waters of the ocean. Interpretation of this proxy has thus far relied on characteristic trends in the isotope composition of the dissolved and particulate silicon pools in the upper ocean, as driven by biological fractionation during the production of biogenic silica (bSiO2, or opal) by diatoms. However, other factors which may influence the silicon isotope composition of diatom opal, particularly post-formational aging and maturation processes, remain largely uninvestigated. Here, we report a consistent fractionation of silicon isotopes during the physicochemical dissolution of diatom bSiO2 suspended in seawater under closed conditions. This fractionation acts counter to that occurring during bSiO2 production and at about half its absolute magnitude, with dissolution discriminating against the release of the heavier isotopes of silicon at an enrichment factor εDSi–BSi of −0.55‰, corresponding to a fractionation factor α30/28 of 0.99945. The enrichment factor did not vary with source material, indicating the lack of a significant species effect, or with temperature from 3 to 20 °C. Thus, the dissolution of bSiO2 produces dissolved silicon with a δ30Si value that is 0.55‰ more negative than its parent bSiO2, an effect that must be accounted for when interpreting oceanic δ30Si distributions. The δ30Si values of both the dissolved and particulate silicon pools increased linearly as dissolution progressed, implying a measurable (±0.1‰) change in the relative δ30Si of opal samples whenever the difference in preservation efficiency between them is >20%. This effect could account for 10–30% of the difference in diatom δ30Si values observed between glacial and interglacial conditions. It is unlikely, however, that the inferred maximum possible change in δb30SiO2 of +0.55‰ would be manifested in situ, as a high mean percentage of dissolution would include complete loss of the more soluble members of the diatom assemblage.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide is photochemically produced in natural waters. It has been implicated in the oxidative-induced mortality of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), a microbial water quality measure. To assess levels and cycling of peroxide in beach waters monitored for FIB, diel studies were carried out in surf zone waters in July 2009 at Crystal Cove State Beach, Southern California, USA. Maximum concentrations of 160–200 nM were obtained within 1 h of solar noon. Levels dropped at night to 20–40 nM, consistent with photochemical production from sunlight. Day-time production and night-time dark loss rates averaged 16 ± 3 nM h−1 and 12 ± 4 nM h−1 respectively. Apparent quantum yields averaged 0.07 ± 0.02. Production was largely dominated by sunlight, with some dependence on chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) levels in waters with high absorption coefficients. Peroxide levels measured here are sufficient to cause oxidative-stress-induced mortality of bacteria, affect FIB diel cycling and impact microbial water quality in marine bathing waters.  相似文献
