A generalized continuum method for dynamic analysis of asymmetric tall buildings

The paper presents a continuum method for dynamic analysis of asymmetric tall buildings with uniform cross-section in which the horizontal stiffness is provided by shear walls and columns of arbitrary shape and layout, coupled by horizontal beams. The equations of motions are formulated in variational terms, including axial strain energy. Numerical solutions, obtained by using finite time differences and infinite polynomials, are presented for the response of a twenty-storey building with six shear walls to an impact load and earthquake accelerations. It is shown that omission of the axial deformations results in a substantially distorted pattern of behaviour, some of its effects being:

• 1 Overestimation of the bending stiffness of the coupled shear walls, with corresponding changes in their stiffness ratios.
• 2 Underestimation of the periods of the principal modes, with a corresponding change in the dynamic response.
• 3 Distortion of the magnitude, form, time of onset and coupling of the maximum displacements.
• 4 Pronounced change in the shear force and moment diagrams for the shear walls, the beams and the building as a whole.

     

Magma mixing in mafic alkaline volcanic rocks: the evidence from relict phenocryst phases and other inclusions

Green clinopyroxenes, commonly rounded and anhedral and richer in Fe, Na and Mn than the pyroxenes of the surrounding groundmass are a common feature of mafic alkaline volcanic rocks (e.g. basanites, monchiquites, leucitites). Some are accompanied by one or more of the following phases: Fe-rich kaersutite and biotite, anorthoclase, sodic plagioclase, apatite, magnetite, sphene, which are believed to be cognate with the green pyroxenes. We review evidence that these minerals have crystallized from mugearite, trachyte or phonolite magmas, and their presence in mafic alkaline rocks is due to magma mixing. The intermediate and salic magmas may sometimes be generated at mantle depths, possibly by melting of mantle material enriched in Fe, Na and volatiles.

Uranium has been measured by homogenized fission track analysis in 34 samples of 22 achondrites. Potassium has been determined in aliquots of eleven of these. The results, combined with previous Al data, are not compatible with achondrite formation from chondritic material by previously suggested fractional melting or metal-sulfide segregation processes.     

Theoretical models for electromagnetic induction in the oceans

The different methods and techniques employed in the theory of electromagnetic induction in thin sheets are reviewed and the methods for approximation to the solution are indicated. These depend on whether the sheet is closed or finite and on whether the integrated conductivity and/or the frequency of variations is high or low.Results for induction in finite sheets which are suitable for ocean modelling are given. These include sheets of perfect conductivity and sheets of finite conductivity which is either discontinuous or continuous at the boundary. The dependence of the “coastline effect” for a global ocean on the location of the edge of the continental shelf, the period of variation of the external field and the conductivity of the underlying earth is explained.     

Surface cauldron subsidence with associated faulting and fissure basalt eruptions at gariboldi pass,Shoa, Ethiopia

Recent Quaternary faulting and vulcanicity accompanied by peculiar subsidence phenomena in the northern part of the Main Ethiopian Rift are described for the first time. A suggested sequence of geological events is given.

Relationship between microseisms,geomagnetic activity and ionospheric absorption of radio waves

Summary Relatively good correlation between such remote phenomena as microseisms, geomagnetic activity and ionospheric absorption of radio waves has been observed. These phenomena are probably connected by a considerably increased penetration of energetic particles into the atmosphere under conditions of geomagnetic activity.     

Toxicity of No. 2 fuel oil to coon stripe shrimp

Bioassay of a No. 2 fuel oil dispersion with shrimp in a continuous flow system using measured waterborne oil as the indicator of oil concentrations reveals a treatment more definable than those previously described in terms of volume ratios and produces lower lethal concentrations. Shrimp 96-h LC₅₀ was 0.8 mg/l in this study as compared to values from 1.5 to 50 mg/l reported for other methods. Mean concentrations in tests do not give significant differences in concentration with respect to day of the test or spatial distribution in the exposure tanks.
