The chemical composition of surface water in the photic zone of the Precambrian ocean is almost exclusively known from studies of stromatolitic carbonates, while banded iron formations (IFs) have provided information on the composition of deeper waters. Here we discuss the trace element and Nd isotope geochemistry of very shallow-water IF from the Pongola Supergroup, South Africa, to gain a better understanding of solute sources to Mesoarchean shallow coastal seawater. The Pongola Supergroup formed on the stable margin of the Kaapvaal craton ∼2.9 Ga ago and contains banded iron formations (IFs) that represent the oldest documented Superior-type iron formations. The IFs are near-shore, pure chemical sediments, and shale-normalized rare earth and yttrium distributions (REYSN) exhibit positive LaSN, GdSN, and YSN anomalies, which are typical features of marine waters throughout the Archean and Proterozoic. The marine origin of these samples is further supported by super-chondritic Y/Ho ratios (average Y/Ho = 42). Relative to older Isua IFs (3.7 Ga) from Greenland, and younger Kuruman IFs (2.5 Ga) also from South Africa, the Pongola IFs are depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREE), and appear to record variations in solute fluxes related to sea level rise and fall. Sm-Nd isotopes were used to identify potential sediment and solute sources within pongola shales and IFs. The ?Nd(t) for Pongola shales ranges from −2.7 to −4.2, and ?Nd(t) values for the coeval iron-formation samples (range −1.9 to −4.3) are generally indistinguishable from those of the shales, although two IF samples display ?Nd(t) as low as −8.1 and −10.9. The similarity in Nd isotope signatures between the shale and iron-formation suggests that mantle-derived REY were not a significant Nd source within the Pongola depositional environment, though the presence of positive Eu anomalies in the IF samples indicates that high-T hydrothermal input did contribute to their REY signature. Isotopic mass balance calculations indicate that most (?72%) of the Nd in these seawater precipitates was derived from continental sources. If previous models of Fe-Nd distributions in Archean IFs are applied, then the Pongola IFs suggest that continental fluxes of Fe to Archean seawater were significantly greater than are generally considered.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and partitioning (between the solid and aqueous phase) of chromium in a glaciofluvial aquifer in northeastern Connecticut were assessed. Most of the chromium (99 percent of its mass) is bound to the soil. Retardation is primarily the result of binding to organic matter and adsorption to iron oxide coatings. However, other attenuation mechanisms also appear to be significant. If the degree of chromium binding observed here is representative of other chromium contaminated sites, pump-and-treat remediation will not remove the vast amount of chromium from the subsurface. However, most of the chromium may be immobile, and removal may not be required following the initial pumping to remove the mobile fraction. Further knowledge of the mechanisms that bind chromium to the soil, their reversibility, and their kinetics is essential to developing effective remediation strategies.  相似文献

Assessment of lightning-related fatality and injury risk in Canada   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This article summarizes research completed to assess the risk of lightning-related injuries and fatalities in Canada. Although lightning mortality has declined significantly over the past century, it remains a common meteorological hazard that regularly kills and injures. Based on an analysis of media reports, vital statistics, hospital admission and emergency room visit records, and fire loss data, the authors estimate that on average about 9–10 lightning-related deaths and 92–164 injuries occur each year in Canada. The distribution of casualties reflects current provincial population and cloud-to-ground lightning densities. Consistent with similar studies in other developed nations, most lightning-related fatalities and injuries in Canada occur during the June-August summer season, coincident with peak lightning, and during the Thursday-Saturday period, most likely related to higher rates of participation in outdoor activities. The majority of victims are male, less than 46 years old, and engaged in outdoor recreational activities when injured or killed in a lightning incident. Media reports used in the study were found to underestimate both lightning mortality (36%) and morbidity (20–600%).

The lower part of the Cretaceous Sego Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale in east‐central Utah contains three 10‐ to 20‐m thick layers of tide‐deposited sandstone arranged in a forward‐ and then backward‐stepping stacking pattern. Each layer of tidal sandstone formed during an episode of shoreline regression and transgression, and offshore wave‐influenced marine deposits separating these layers formed after subsequent shoreline transgression and marine ravinement. Detailed facies architecture studies of these deposits suggest sandstone layers formed on broad tide‐influenced river deltas during a time of fluctuating relative sea‐level. Shale‐dominated offshore marine deposits gradually shoal and become more sandstone‐rich upward to the base of a tidal sandstone layer. The tidal sandstones have sharp erosional bases that formed as falling relative sea‐level allowed tides to scour offshore marine deposits. The tidal sandstones were deposited as ebb migrating tidal bars aggraded on delta fronts. Most delta top deposits were stripped during transgression. Where the distal edge of a deltaic sandstone is exposed, a sharp‐based stack of tidal bar deposits successively fines upward recording a landward shift in deposition after maximum lowstand. Where more proximal parts of a deltaic‐sandstone are exposed, a sharp‐based upward‐coarsening succession of late highstand tidal bar deposits is locally cut by fluvial valleys, or tide‐eroded estuaries, formed during relative sea‐level lowstand or early stages of a subsequent transgression. Estuary fills are highly variable, reflecting local depositional processes and variable rates of sediment supply along the coastline. Lateral juxtaposition of regressive deltaic deposits and incised transgressive estuarine fills produced marked facies changes in sandstone layers along strike. Estuarine fills cut into the forward‐stepped deltaic sandstone tend to be more deeply incised and richer in sandstone than those cut into the backward‐stepped deltaic sandstone. Tidal currents strongly influenced deposition during both forced regression and subsequent transgression of shorelines. This contrasts with sandstones in similar basinal settings elsewhere, which have been interpreted as tidally influenced only in transgressive parts of depositional successions.  相似文献

The problem of predicting future short-term chemical behaviour in acidic and acid-sensitive streams is addressed. A relatively simple method is presented which combines a chemical technique for splitting the hydrograph into ground water and soil water components, based on the conservative component acid neutralization capacity, with the long-term hydrochemical model (MAGIC) in a ‘two-box’ mode. This method, coupled with a chemical speciation program (ALCHEMI), is used to assess short-term variations in stream chemistry with change in atmospheric deposition chemistry. The method is applied for a semi-natural moorland catchment in mid-Wales (Afon Gwy). For both hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium, the modelled stream mixing relationships are non-linear, particularly at low hydrogen ion concentrations. The results also show that the relationship between hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium concentrations varies with time in the stream. This result has important implications as it implies that aluminium concentrations will not recover, with reduced anthropogenic sulphur deposition, as rapidly as has previously been thought. Two methods, for use with critical load evaluation of ecological stress, are presented for describing the changes occurring: the hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium concentration duration curve; the hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium incident frequenty diagram.  相似文献

Collisions are a fundamental process in the creation of asteroid families and in satellite formation. For this reason, understanding the outcome of impacts is fundamental to the accurate modeling of the formation and evolution of such systems. Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics/N-body codes have become the techniques of choice to study large-scale impact outcomes, including both the fragmentation of the parent body and the gravitational interactions between fragments. It is now possible to apply this technique to targets with either monolithic or rubble-pile internal structures. In this paper we apply these numerical techniques to rubble-pile targets, extending previous investigations by Durda et al. (Durda, D.D., Bottke, W.F., Enke, B.L., Merline, W.J., Asphaug, E., Richardson, D.C., Leinhardt, Z.M. [2004]. Icarus 170, 243–257; Durda, D.D., Bottke, W.F., Nesvorný, D., Enke, B.L., Merline, W.J., Asphaug, E., Richardson, D.C. [2007]. Icarus 186, 498–516). The goals are to study asteroid–satellite formation and the morphology of the size–frequency distributions (SFDs) from 175 impact simulations covering a range of collision speeds, impact angles, and impactor sizes. Our results show that low-energy impacts into rubble-pile and monolithic targets produce different features in the resulting SFDs and that these are potentially diagnostic of the initial conditions for the impact and the internal structure of the parent bodies of asteroid families. In contrast, super-catastrophic events (i.e., high-energy impacts with large specific impact energy) result in SFDs that are similar to each other. We also find that rubble-pile targets are less efficient in producing satellites than their monolithic counterparts. However, some features, such as the secondary-to-primary diameter ratio and the relative separation of components in binary systems, are similar for these two different internal structures of parent bodies.  相似文献

The Rheic Ocean formed at ca. 500 Ma, when several peri-Gondwanan terranes (e.g. Avalonia and Carolinia) drifted from the northern margin of Gondwana, and were consumed during the Late Carboniferous collision between Laurussia and Gondwana, a key event in the formation of Pangea. Several mafic complexes ranging in age from ca. 400–330 Ma preserve many of the lithotectonic and/or chemical characteristics of ophiolites. They are characterized by anomalously high εNd values that are typically either between or above the widely accepted model depleted mantle curves. These data indicate derivation from a highly depleted (HD) mantle and imply that (i) the mantle source of these complexes displays time-integrated depletion in Nd relative to Sm, and (ii) depletion is the result of an earlier melting event in the mantle from which basalt was extracted. The extent of mantle depletion indicates that this melting event occurred in the Neoproterozoic, possibly up to 500 million years before the Rheic Ocean formed. If so, the mantle lithosphere that gave rise to the Rheic Ocean mafic complexes must have been captured from an adjacent, older oceanic tract. The transfer of this captured lithosphere to the upper plate enabled it to become preferentially preserved. Possible Mesozoic–Cenozoic analogues include the capture of the Caribbean plate or the Scotia plate from the Pacific to the Atlantic oceanic realm. Our model implies that virtually all of the oceanic lithosphere generated during the opening phase of the Rheic Ocean was consumed by subduction during Laurentia–Gondwana convergence.  相似文献
