The studies reported in this special issue ofDeep-Sea Research are largely derived from data collected as part of programs supported by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service (MMS) in response to concerns about the effect of oil and gas exploration on the largely unknown continental slope environment. Results of the MMS U.S. South Atlantic continental slope and rise program conducted off the Carolinas from Cape Hatteras to off Charleston in depths ranging from 600–3500 m identified the importance of the slope off Cape Hatteras in cycling of materials from the shelf to the deep sea. Other more detailed investigations followed which filled numerous gaps in our knowledge of the role played by such special regions of the continental slope in the global cycling of carbon and other materials. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the static structural response of a new type of composite stiffener containing a viscoelastic insert. The introduction of this material has proven benefits in terms of noise and vibration attenuation across the joint. House, 1997 describes the use of this material in sonar dome/hull connections — equipment sensitive to noise and vibration. Structural stiffeners incorporating this material would have positive implications for not only marine and ocean structures but for structural applications in general. The effects of introducing this new material on the structural response of the joint are numerically examined by using a progressive damage model. Application of this method allows the initiation and progression of failure and ultimate failure load to be predicted. Tracing sources and cycling of phosphorus in Peru Margin sediments using oxygen isotopes in authigenic and detrital phosphates 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Many (bio)geochemical processes that bring about changes in sediment chemistry normally begin at the sediment-water interface, continue at depth within the sediment column and may persist throughout the lifetime of sediments. Because of the differential reactivity of sedimentary phosphate phases in response to diagenesis, dissolution/precipitation and biological cycling, the oxygen isotope ratios of phosphate (δ18OP) can carry a distinct signature of these processes, as well as inform on the origin of specific P phases. Here, we present results of sequential sediment extraction (SEDEX) analyses combined with δ18OP measurements, aimed at characterizing authigenic and detrital phosphate phases in continental margin sediments from three sites (Sites 1227, 1228 and 1229) along the Peru Margin collected during ODP Leg 201. Our results show that the amount of P in different reservoirs varies significantly in the upper 50 m of the sediment column, but with a consistent pattern, for example, detrital P is highest in siliciclastic-rich layers. The δ18OP values of authigenic phosphate vary between 20.2‰ and 24.8‰ and can be classified into at least two major groups: authigenic phosphate precipitated at/near the sediment-water interface in equilibrium with paleo-water oxygen isotope ratios (δ18Ow) and temperature, and phosphate derived from hydrolysis of organic matter (Porg) with subsequent incomplete to complete re-equlibration and precipitated deeper in the sediments column. The δ18OP values of detrital phosphate, which vary from 7.7-15.4‰, suggest two possible terrigenous sources and their mixtures in different proportions: phosphate from igneous/metamorphic rocks and phosphate precipitated in source regions in equilibrium with δ18Ow of meteoric water. More importantly, original isotopic compositions of at least one phase of authigenic phosphates and all detrital phosphates are not altered by diagenesis and other biogeochemical changes within the sediment column. These findings help to understand the origin and provenance of P phases and paleoenvironmental conditions at/near the sediment-water interface, and to infer post-depositional activities within the sediment column. 相似文献

We describe the construction of MegaZ-LRG, a photometric redshift catalogue of over one million luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.7 with limiting magnitude i < 20 . The catalogue is selected from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and Quasar (2SLAQ) spectroscopic redshift catalogue of 13 000 intermediate-redshift LRGs provides a photometric redshift training set, allowing use of ann z, a neural network-based photometric-redshift estimator. The rms photometric redshift accuracy obtained for an evaluation set selected from the 2SLAQ sample is σ z = 0.049 averaged over all galaxies, and σ z = 0.040 for a brighter subsample ( i < 19.0) . The catalogue is expected to contain ∼5 per cent stellar contamination. The ann z code is used to compute a refined star/galaxy probability based on a range of photometric parameters; this allows the contamination fraction to be reduced to 2 per cent with negligible loss of genuine galaxies. Seventeen post-Miocene strato volcanoes have been identified on Bougainville, the largest island of the Solomon Group. From north-west to south-east, these are the Tore, Balbi, Numa Numa, Billy Mitchell, Bagana, Reini, and Bakanovi volcanoes and the Takuan and Toroka groups of volcanoes: the Taroka group includes Loloru volcano. In addition there are several other post-Miocene volcanoes in northern Bougainville which have not been accurately delineated. Only three of the volcanoes are active or potentially active; these are Bagana, the most active volcano in the Territory of New Guinea, and the dormant Balbi and Loloru volcanoes. The volcanoes are built up of lavas and pyroclastic deposits mostly of andesitic composition, although some dacitic rocks are also present. Modal and chemical analyses show that these rocks belong to the calc-alkaline suite characteristic of orogesic regions. 相似文献

West Virginia is the only place in the United States where an entire section of Pennsylvanian age (Upper Carboniferous) strata can be seen. These strata occur within a wedge of rock that thins to the north and west from the southeastern part of the State. The progressive north-northwesterly termination of older Pennsylvanian geologic units beneath younger ones prominently outlines the center of the Appalachian basin of West Virginia. Over most of West Virginia, Lower and/or Middle Pennsylvanian strata unconformably overly Upper Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) strata. Sediment deposition was accomplished by a complex system of deltas prograding north and west from an eastern and southeastern source area.More than 100 named coal beds occur within the Lower, Middle, and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks of West Virginia and at least 60 of these have been or are currently being mined commercially. Collectively, these coal beds account for original in-ground coal resources of almost 106.1×109 t (117×109 tons). West Virginia ranks fourth in the United States in demonstrated coal reserves. In 1988, West Virginia produced 131.4×106 t (144.9×106 T) of coal, third highest in the United States. Of this annual production, 75% was from underground mines. In 1988, West Virginia led the nation in the number of longwall mining sections currently in place. West Virginia's low-volatile coal beds are known worldwide as important metallurgical-grade coals, while the higher-volatile coal beds are utilized primarily for steam production. 相似文献

Colonies of the shallow-water Caribbean coral Manicina areolata incorporated petroleum hydrocarbons into their tissues during exposure to water accommodated fractions of No. 2 fuel oil for three months. This contamination was not removed after depuration periods of up to two weeks. Although these corals remained alive, evidence of pathological responses was found which included impaired development of reproductive tissues, degeneration and loss of symbiotic zooxanthellae, and atrophy of mucous secretory cells and muscle bundles. 相似文献
