Standard geostatistical methods for simulation of heterogeneity were applied to the Romeriksporten tunnel in Norway, where water was leaking through high-permeable fracture zones into the tunnel while it was under construction, causing drainage problems on the surface. After the tunnel was completed, artificial infiltration of water into wells drilled from the tunnel was implemented to control the leakage. Synthetic heterogeneity was generated at a scale sufficiently small to simulate the effects of remedial actions that were proposed to control the leakage. The flow field depends on the variance of permeabilities and the covariance model used to generate the heterogeneity. Flow channeling is the most important flow mechanism if the variance of the permeability field is large compared to the expected value. This condition makes the tunnel leakage difficult to control. The main effects of permeability changes due to sealing injection are simulated by a simple perturbation of the log-normal probability density function of the permeability. If flow channeling is the major transport mechanism of water into the tunnel, implementation of artificial infiltration of water to control the leakage requires previous chemical-sealing injection to be successful. Bahia de la Ascension (BA) is a shallow, mangrove-fringed coastal bay connected to the Caribbean through two inlets, outlined by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. This work represents an initial investigation of the relative contribution of hydrometeorological and hydrodynamic forcing on salinity variation in this lagoon. Our objective is to assess the sensitivity of the salinity in BA to fluctuations in freshwater inflow and coastal oceanography. Two field trips were undertaken during rainy and dry seasons in 2007. Surface salinity was mapped across the system and CTD deployments carried out within BA and in the sea end-member to characterize temperature, conductivity, and water level. Also, cross-sectional CTD profiles were implemented to examine vertical stratification. The water balance indicated that 16 % of rainfall over the drainage basin (DB) becomes groundwater discharge plus surface runoff into BA during dry season, while 68 % of the precipitation input to the DB is supplied through groundwater–surface runoff to the bay during rainfalls. This combined inflow showed larger fluctuations than direct rainfall and, thus, has a greater potential to alter the seasonal salinity variations within BA. The tidal signal is selectively attenuated within BA, as diurnal frequencies are more readily filtered out than semidiurnal frequencies. Mesohaline conditions in the southwest bay are associated with freshwater sources, while saline water masses in the inlet are influenced by prevalent SE winds in the region and tidal phase, establishing a strong horizontal SW-NE estuarine salinity gradient.  相似文献

The drumlin field at Múlajökull, Iceland, is considered to be an active field in that partly and fully ice‐covered drumlins are being shaped by the current glacier regime. We test the hypothesis that the drumlins form by a combination of erosion and deposition during successive surge cycles. We mapped and measured 143 drumlins and studied their stratigraphy in four exposures. All exposures reveal several till units where the youngest till commonly truncates older tills on the drumlin flanks and proximal slope. Drumlins inside a 1992 moraine are relatively long and narrow whereas drumlins outside the moraine are wider and shorter. A conceptual model suggests that radial crevasses create spatial heterogeneity in normal stress on the bed so that deposition is favoured beneath crevasses and erosion in adjacent areas. Consequently, the crevasse pattern of the glacier controls the location of proto‐drumlins. A feedback mechanism leads to continued crevassing and increased sedimentation at the location of the proto‐drumlins. The drumlin relief and elongation ratio increases as the glacier erodes the sides and drapes a new till over the landform through successive surges. Our observations of this only known active drumlin field may have implications for the formation and morphological evolution of Pleistocene drumlin fields with similar composition, and our model may be tested on modern drumlins that may become exposed upon future ice retreat.  相似文献

Polymer injection is a widespread strategy in enhanced oil recovery. Polymer increases the water viscosity and creates a more favorable mobility ratio between the injected water and the displaced oil. The computational cost of simulating polymer injection can be significantly reduced if one splits the governing system of two-phase equations into a pressure equation and a set of saturation/component equations and use a Gauss–Seidel algorithm with optimal cell ordering to solve the nonlinear systems arising from an implicit discretization of the saturation/component equations. This approach relies on a robust single-cell solver that computes the saturation and polymer concentration of a cell, given the total flux and the saturation and polymer concentration of the neighboring cells. In this paper, we consider a relatively comprehensive polymer model used in an industry-standard simulator, and show that, in the case of a discretization using a two-point flux approximation, the single-cell problem always admits a solution that is also unique.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations have been used to study the pressure-induced changes of the hydrogen bond of Fe-free orthozoisite and clinozoisite and the concomitant shifts of the OH-stretching frequencies. Two independent parameter-free lattice dynamical calculations have been employed. One was based on a plane-wave basis set in conjunction with norm-conserving pseudopotentials and a density functional perturbation theory approach, while the other used a localised basis set and a finite displacement algorithm for the lattice dynamical calculations. Both models confirm the unusually large pressure-induced red-shift found experimentally (−33.89 cm−1/GPa) in orthozoisite, while the pressure-induced shifts in clinozoisite are much smaller (−5 to −9 cm−1/GPa). The atomistic model calculations show that in orthozoisite the nearly linear O–H⋯O arrangement is compressed by about 8% on a pressure increase to 10 GPa, while concomitantly the O–H distance is significantly elongated (by 2.5% at 10 GPa). In clinozoisite, the O–H⋯O arrangement is kinked at ambient conditions and remains kinked at high pressures, while the O-H distance is elongated by only 0.5% at 10 GPa. The current calculations confirm that correlations between the distances and dynamics of hydrogen bonds, which have been established at ambient conditions, cannot be used to infer hydrogen positions at high pressures.  相似文献

Rietveld refinement of X-ray synchrotron data was performed for two synthetic tetrahedrite samples, with 0.61 and 1.83 Fe atoms, and two synthetic tennantite samples with 0.10 and 1.23 Fe atoms p.f.u. M12(Sb,As)4S13. Measurements were performed at 25 and 250°C. For both the phases, increased Fe substitution is reflected in the increased tetrahedral ‘Cu1’–S distance (‘Cu1’ is a site of Fe substitution) and Cu2–S distances. Cu2 was refined as a split position; the Cu2–Cu2 split about the plane of the S12S2 triangle is about 0.56 and 0.65 Å for tetrahedrite and tennantite, respectively. Cu2–Cu2 distances in the structure cavity are 2.8–2.9 Å. Between 25 and 250°C, the lattice parameter a increased by 0.02–0.04 Å and the interatomic distances by 0.01 Å on an average. Thermal expansion coefficients of little-substituted samples are similar to those of unsubstituted samples, whereas thermal expansion appears to decrease with increasing substitution by Fe. The Cu2–Cu2 split increases at 250°C by about 0.1 Å for tetrahedrite and by more than 0.15 Å for tennantite but the cage expansion is minimal so that the Cu2–Cu2 distances in the cavity decrease with temperature. Difference Fourier maps indicate that there is little residual electron density left between the two Cu2 half-sites in tetrahedrite but this inter-site density is substantially higher in tennantite. It increases with temperature, especially in the little-substituted tennantite sample.  相似文献

Biostratigraphical and palaeoecological analyses of cores along a transect from Femer Belt to the Arkona Basin reveal that North Sea waters began to enter the western Baltic Sea between 8600 and 8400 calibrated years BP. Studies of diatoms indicate that Mecklenburg Bay was characterised by slightly brackish-water conditions between 8400 and 8000 cal. years BP. At around 8000 cal. years BP increasing salinity is indicated by a strong dominance of the diatoms Paralia sulcata and Dimeregramma minor. Some centuries later another diatom assemblage appeared and became dominant in Mecklenburg Bay. This assemblage includes Hyalinella lateripunctata and Pravifusus hyalinus species typical of shallow water areas along the Atlantic coast today. At this time the first marine molluscs made their appearance. The oldest shell of a marine mollusc found in our material is dated to 7600 cal. years BP. The associated assemblage that includes adult specimens of the gastropod Aporrhais pespelicani indicates higher salinities than today.During the Littorina Sea stage a marine diatom flora with P. sulcata, Catenula adhaerens and D. minor crossed the Darss Sill and became widely distributed in the Arkona Basin, Pomeranian Bay and the Baltic Sea proper. In contrast, taxa indicative of the Hyalinella lateripunctata/P. hyalinus assemblage are only found west of the Darss Sill in Femer Belt and Mecklenburg Bay. Apparently, the Darss Sill threshold has been acting as an important salinity border from around 7800 cal. years BP until today.  相似文献

Quaternary sediments along a profile crossing the southern part of the Jæren escarpment, southwestern Norway, have been investigated with regard to their glacial history and sea-level variations. Deposits from at least three glaciations and two ice-free periods between Oxygen Isotope Stage 6 and the Late Weichselian have been identified. Subglacial till directly overlain by a glaciomarine regressional succession indicates a deglaciation, and amino acid ratios in Elphidium excavatum between 0.083 and 0.118 date this event to Oxygen Isotope Stage 6. Sea-level dropped from 130 to below 110 m a.s.l. Subsequently, a short-lived ice advance deposited a marginal moraine and a sandur locally on the escarpment. Stratigraphical position and luminescence dates around 148 ka BP suggest deposition during the final stage 6 deglaciation. A Late Weichselian till covers most of the surface of Jæren. In addition to a well documented westerly ice flow, glaciotectonic indications of ice flow towards the north have been found. Ice flow directions and a hiatus between Oxygen Isotope Stage 6 and the Weichselian indicate enhanced erosion along the escarpment and the influence of a Norwegian Channel ice-stream. The history of the Lateglacial and Preboreal sedimentary succession from the Store Slotseng kettle hole basin, SW Denmark is presented. A tephrostratigraphical and multi‐proxy investigation of the sediments, including stable isotope geochemistry, reveals small‐ and large‐scale changes in the surrounding environment through time. Three distinct tephra horizons are observed. Two of them are identified as the Preboreal Hässeldalen Tephra and the Younger Dryas Vedde Ash. The third was deposited around the Pre‐Bølling/Bølling transition. The Preboreal sediments record two significant decreases in authigenic carbonate content. Using tephrostratigraphy the lower one is identified as occurring during the Preboreal Oscillation, while the upper one is contemporaneous with the Rammelbeek Phase, which by some is recognised above the Preboreal Oscillation. This period has not previously been observed in this region. The discovery of the Hässeldalen Tephra in the Store Slotseng basin expands the known southwestern limit of the ash cloud, and increases the area for potential future observations. The Hässeldalen Tephra (c. 11.3 cal. ka BP) was deposited just prior to the Preboreal Oscillation and as such has a large potential for precise correlation and characterization of this short climatic perturbation.  相似文献
