Abstract– Northwest Africa (NWA) 5298 is an evolved basaltic shergottite that has bulk characteristics and mineral compositions consistent with derivation from an oxidized reservoir in Mars. Chemically zoned clinopyroxene (64.5%, augite and pigeonite), with interstitial lath‐shaped plagioclase (29.4%, An40 to An55), constitutes the bulk of this meteorite. The plagioclase has been converted by shock to both isotropic maskelynite and spherulitic, birefringent feldspar representing a quenched vesicular melt. The remainder of the rock consists of minor amounts of Fe‐Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite), phosphates (merrillite and apatite), silica polymorph, fayalite, pyrrhotite, baddeleyite, and minor hot desert weathering products (calcite and barite). Oxygen fugacity derived from Fe‐Ti oxide thermobarometry is close to the quartz‐fayalite‐magnetite (QFM) buffer indicating that the late stage evolution of this magma occurred under more oxidizing condition than those recorded in most other shergottites. Merrillite contains the largest abundances of rare earth elements (REE) of all phases, thereby controlling the REE budget in NWA 5298. The calculated bulk rock REE pattern normalized to CI chondrite is relatively flat. The evolution of the normalized REE patterns of the bulk rock, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and phosphate in NWA 5298 is consistent with closed‐system chemical behavior with no evidence of crustal contamination or postcrystallization disturbance of the REE contents of these phases. 相似文献

The West African monsoon (WAM) circulation and intensity have been shown to be influenced by the land surface in numerous
numerical studies using regional scale and global scale atmospheric climate models (RCMs and GCMs, respectively) over the
last several decades. The atmosphere–land surface interactions are modulated by the magnitude of the north–south gradient
of the low level moist static energy, which is highly correlated with the steep latitudinal gradients of the vegetation characteristics
and coverage, land use, and soil properties over this zone. The African Multidisciplinary Monsoon Analysis (AMMA) has organised
comprehensive activities in data collection and modelling to further investigate the significance land–atmosphere feedbacks.
Surface energy fluxes simulated by an ensemble of land surface models from AMMA Land-surface Model Intercomparison Project
(ALMIP) have been used as a proxy for the best estimate of the “real world” values in order to evaluate GCM and RCM simulations
under the auspices of the West African Monsoon Modelling Experiment (WAMME) project, since such large-scale observations do
not exist. The ALMIP models have been forced in off-line mode using forcing based on a mixture of satellite, observational,
and numerical weather prediction data. The ALMIP models were found to agree well over the region where land–atmosphere coupling
is deemed to be most important (notably the Sahel), with a high signal to noise ratio (generally from 0.7 to 0.9) in the ensemble
and a inter-model coefficient of variation between 5 and 15%. Most of the WAMME models simulated spatially averaged net radiation
values over West Africa which were consistent with the ALMIP estimates, however, the partitioning of this energy between sensible
and latent heat fluxes was significantly different: WAMME models tended to simulate larger (by nearly a factor of two) monthly
latent heat fluxes than ALMIP. This results due to a positive precipitation bias in the WAMME models and a northward displacement
of the monsoon in most of the GCMs and RCMs. Another key feature not found in the WAMME models is peak seasonal latent heat
fluxes during the monsoon retreat (approximately a month after the peak precipitation rates) from soil water stores. This
is likely related to the WAMME northward bias of the latent heat flux gradient during the WAM onset. 相似文献

Monthly averaged total volume transport of the Indonesian throughflow (ITF) estimated by 14 global ocean data assimilation (ODA) products that are decade to multi-decade long are compared among themselves and with observations from the INSTANT Program (2004–2006). The main goals of the comparisons are to examine the consistency and evaluate the skill of different ODA products in simulating ITF transport. The ensemble averaged, time-mean value of ODA estimates is 13.6 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3/s) for the common 1993–2001 period and 13.9 Sv for the 2004–2006 INSTANT Program period. These values are close to the 15-Sv estimate derived from INSTANT observations. All but one ODA time-mean estimate fall within the range of uncertainty of the INSTANT estimate. In terms of temporal variability, the scatter among different ODA estimates averaged over time is 1.7 Sv, which is substantially smaller than the magnitude of the temporal variability simulated by the ODA systems. Therefore, the overall “signal-to-noise” ratio for the ensemble estimates is larger than one. The best consistency among the products occurs on seasonal-to-interannual time scales, with generally stronger (weaker) ITF during boreal summer (winter) and during La Nina (El Nino) events. The scatter among different products for seasonal-to-interannual time scales is approximately 1 Sv. Despite the good consistency, systematic difference is found between most ODA products and the INSTANT observations. All but the highest-resolution (18 km) ODA product show a dominant annual cycle while the INSTANT estimate and the 18-km product exhibit a strong semi-annual signal. The coarse resolution is an important factor that limits the level of agreement between ODA and INSTANT estimates. Decadal signals with periods of 10–15 years are seen. The most conspicuous and consistent decadal change is a relatively sharp increase in ITF transport during 1993–2000 associated with the strengthening tropical Pacific trade wind. Most products do not show a weakening ITF after the mid-1970s’ associated with the weakened Pacific trade wind. The scatter of ODA estimates is smaller after than before 1980, reflecting the impact of the enhanced observations after the 1980s. To assess the representativeness of using the average over a three-year period (e.g., the span of the INSTANT Program) to describe longer-term mean, we investigate the temporal variations of the three-year low-pass ODA estimates. The average variation is about 3.6 Sv, which is largely due to the increase of ITF transport from 1993 to 2000. However, the three-year average during the 2004–2006 INSTANT Program period is within 0.5 Sv of the long-term mean for the past few decades. 相似文献

The hypothesis that reducing conditions exist in localized zones of high organic matter, termed microniches, was first suggested over a century ago, but only relatively recently have high-resolution techniques been available to investigate them. In any sediment containing benthic fauna, bioturbation affects the distribution of a number of redox-sensitive components. Direct faecal deposition and the death of fauna may be expected to cause particles of labile organic matter (microniches) to be distributed heterogeneously within the sediment. This review discusses the significance and future direction of microniche studies by considering, exclusively, data obtained on a sub-mm scale that provide significant evidence for the existence and properties of microniches. Microelectrodes and planar optodes have shown the significant effect of burrowing organisms on localized O2 distributions and revealed distinct depletions in O2 due to microniches. Localized increases in pCO2 and decreases in pH measured by optodes were attributed to elevated activity at microniches. Diffusive gradients in thin-films have shown isolated supersaturation of metals and sulphide, providing evidence for possible simultaneous oxidation of organic matter by sulphate and iron oxides. The stochastic nature of these data and the lack of information for the same precise location hinders interpretation in terms of sediment diagenesis. If microniches are known to account for a significant proportion of organic matter degradation, re-examination of the current understanding of sedimentary diagenesis may be needed. Further investigation on the distribution and frequency of microniches is required, including a wider range of analytes, in order to estimate their cumulative effect on element diagenesis, immobilisation/remobilisation processes and ultimately pollutant fate. 相似文献

We have conducted experiments to evaluate the vapour-liquid fractionation of Mo(VI) in the system MoO3-NH3-H2O at 300-370 °C and saturated vapour pressure, using a two-chamber autoclave that allows separate trapping of the vapour and liquid. The measured total Mo concentrations in each phase were used to calculate a distribution coefficient, , which increases as the density of the vapour approaches that of the liquid, and is greater than one for pH ? 4. Molybdenum speciation in the vapour is described by a single complex, MoO3H2O. By contrast, thermodynamic modeling of the distribution of Mo species in the liquid indicates that bimolybdate (HMoO4−) is the dominant aqueous species at the conditions of our experiments, and that molybdate (MoO42−) and molybdic acid (H2MoO40) are present in smaller quantities. As vapour-liquid fractionation occurs between neutral species, it is governed by the reaction H2MoO40(aq) = MoO3 · H2O(g). Fractionation is therefore controlled by the concentration of H2MoO40 in the liquid, which increases with increasing temperature and decreasing pH. Owing to the pH dependence of , it cannot be used to describe Mo fractionation in aqueous vapour-liquid systems with compositions different than those of this study. We have therefore calculated a composition-independent (Henry’s Law) constant, , for each experimental point, using the measured total Mo concentration in the vapour and the modeled concentration of H2MoO40 in the liquid. This constant may be applied to aqueous vapour-liquid systems of known liquid composition to estimate the concentration of Mo in a vapour for which little chemical information is available, and thereby supplement the available fractionation data for natural porphyry-forming systems. The results of this study demonstrate that at conditions typical of natural porphyry ore-forming systems, a significant amount of molybdenum fractionates into the vapour over the liquid, and the vapour may transport quantities of Mo in excess of that in the liquid at pH conditions below those of the muscovite-microcline reaction boundary. 相似文献

Abstract— We present new compositional data for 30 lunar stones representing about 19 meteorites. Most have iron concentrations intermediate to those of the numerous feldspathic lunar meteorites (3–7% FeO) and the basaltic lunar meteorites (17–23% FeO). All but one are polymict breccias. Some, as implied by their intermediate composition, are mainly mixtures of brecciated anorthosite and mare basalt, with low concentrations of incompatible elements such as Sm (1–3 μg/g). These breccias likely originate from points on the Moon where mare basalt has mixed with material of the FHT (Feldspathic Highlands Terrane). Others, however, are not anorthosite‐basalt mixtures. Three (17–75 μ/g Sm) consist mainly of nonmare mafic material from the nearside PKT (Procellarum KREEP Terrane) and a few are ternary mixtures of material from the FHT, PKT, and maria. Some contain mafic, nonmare lithologies like anorthositic norites, norites, gabbronorites, and troctolite. These breccias are largely unlike breccias of the Apollo collection in that they are poor in Sm as well as highly feldspathic anorthosite such as that common at the Apollo 16 site. Several have high Th/Sm compared to Apollo breccias. Dhofar 961, which is olivine gabbronoritic and moderately rich in Sm, has lower Eu/Sm than Apollo samples of similar Sm concentration. This difference indicates that the carrier of rare earth elements is not KREEP, as known from the Apollo missions. On the basis of our present knowledge from remote sensing, among lunar meteorites Dhofar 961 is the one most likely to have originated from South Pole‐Aitken basin on the lunar far side. 相似文献

We present simulated images of Supernova 1993J at 8.4 GHz using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) techniques. A spherically symmetric source model is convolved with realistic u v -plane distributions, together with standard imaging procedures, to assess the extent of instrumental effects on the recovered brightness distribution. In order to facilitate direct comparisons between the simulations and published VLBI images of SN 1993J, the observed u v -coverage is determined from actual VLBI observations made in the years following its discovery.
The underlying source model only exhibits radial variation in its density profile, with no azimuthal dependence and, even though this model is morphologically simple, the simulated VLBI observations qualitatively reproduce many of the azimuthal features of the reported VLBI observations, such as appearance and evolution of complex azimuthal structure and apparent rotation of the shell. We demonstrate that such features are inexorably coupled to the u v -plane sampling.
The brightness contrast between the peaks and the surrounding shell material are not as prominent in the simulations (which of course assume no antenna- or baseline-based amplitude or phase errors, meaning no self-calibration procedures will have incorporated any such features in models). It is conclusive that incomplete u v -plane sampling has a drastic effect on the final images for observations of this nature. Difference imaging reveals residual emission up to the 8σ level. Extreme care should be taken when using interferometric observations to directly infer the structure of objects such as supernovae. 相似文献

We report the final redshift release of the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS), a combined redshift and peculiar velocity survey over the southern sky (| b | > 10°) . Its 136 304 spectra have yielded 110 256 new extragalactic redshifts and a new catalogue of 125 071 galaxies making near-complete samples with ( K , H , J , r F , b J ) ≤ (12.65, 12.95, 13.75, 15.60, 16.75) . The median redshift of the survey is 0.053. Survey data, including images, spectra, photometry and redshifts, are available through an online data base. We describe changes to the information in the data base since earlier interim data releases. Future releases will include velocity dispersions, distances and peculiar velocities for the brightest early-type galaxies, comprising about 10 per cent of the sample. Here we provide redshift maps of the southern local Universe with z ≤ 0.1 , showing nearby large-scale structures in hitherto unseen detail.
