Groundwater recharge and palaeoclimate in the Sirte and Kufra basins, Libya   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Stable and radio-isotope results (C, H, O) for groundwaters from the Sirte and northern Kufra basins are used to determine the recharge history during the Holocene and late Pleistocene. Radiocarbon ages have been corrected on the basis of their stable carbon isotope ratios and on environmental samples from the areas, and two groups may be recognised: (1) low 14C activity groundwaters (13000–34000 yr. BP) with δ 13C-5.6 to −11.7‰; and (2) higher 14C activity groundwaters (5000–7800 yr. BP) enriched in 13C up to δ 13C = −3.2‰. There is a general correlation of age with depth.

A well defined freshwater (< 50 mg/l Cl) channel can be traced within the aquifer for some 130 km through the region, which is considered to represent recharge from a former wadi. This water with an age of ± 7800 yr. BP is chemically and isotopically distinct from the regional groundwaters and provides direct evidence of a significant recharge event during the Holocene.

The stable isotope (O and H) composition of groundwater from the Kufra and Sirte basins are all related by an evaporative line with slope δ D = 4.5δ 13O − 35 with an intercept on the meteoric line of -11‰. This suggests a recharge source continuing into the Holocene from air masses, analogous to current heavy monsoon rain derived from south of the Sahara. The spatial and temporal distribution of groundwaters in relation to the evaporative line suggests a progressive change in character of the recharge which is controlled by a shift towards strongly convective rainfall during the Holocene.

The direct hydrogeological and geochemical evidence supports climatic models proposed by several workers in which discrete humid episodes during the Holocene are inferred.  相似文献

The eruption of Kilauea Volcano August 21–23, 1963, left 600,000 cubic meters of basaltic lava in a lava lake as much as 15 meters deep in Alae pit crater. Field studies of the lake began August 27 and include repeated core drilling, measurements of temperature in the crust and melt, and precise level surveys of the lake surface. The last interstitial melt in the lake solidified late in September 1964; by mid August 1965 the maximum temperature was 690°C at a depth of 11.5 meters. Pumice air-quenched from about 1140°C contains only 5 percent crystals — clinopyroxene, cuhedral olivine (Fo 80), and a trace of plagioclase, (An 70). Drill cores taken from the zone of crystallization in the lake show that olivine continued crystallizing to about 1070°C; below that it reacts with the melt, becoming corroded and mantled by pyroxene and plagioclase. Below 1070°C, pyroxene and plagioclase crystallized at a constant ratio. Ilmenite first appeared at about 1070°C and was joined by magnetite at about 1050°C; both increased rapidly in abundance to 1000°C. Apatite first appeared as minute needles in interstitial glass at 1000°C. Both the abundance and index of refraction of glass quenched from melt decreased nearly linearly with falling temperature. At 1070°C the quenched lava contains about 65 percent dark-brown glass with an index of 1.61; at 980°C it contains about 8 percent colorless glass with an index of 1.49. Below 980°C, the percentage of glass remained constant. Progressive crystallization forced exsolution of gases from the melt fraction; these formed vesicles and angular pores, causing expansion of the crystallizing lava and lifting the surface of the central part of the lake an average of 19.5 cm. The solidified basalt underwent pneumatolitic alteration, including deposition of cristobalite at 800°C, reddish alteration of olivine at 700°C, tarnishing of ilmenite at 550°C, deposition of anhydrite at 250°C, and deposition of native sulfur at 100°C. Ferric-ferrous ratios suggest that oxidation with maximum intensity between 550°C and 610°C moved downward in the crust as it cooled; this was followed by reduction at a temperature of about 100°C. The crystallized basalt is a homogeneous fine-grained rock containing on the average 48.3 percent by volume intergranular pyroxene (augite > pigeonite), 34.2 percent plagioclase laths (An60 70), 7.9 percent interstitial glass, 6.9 percent opaques (ilmenite > magnetite), 2.7 percent olivine (Fo70 80), and a trace of apatite. Chemical analyses of 18 samples, ranging from initially quenched pumice to lava cored more than a year after the eruption from the center and from near the base of the lake, show little variation from silica-saturated tholeiitic basalt containing 50.4 percent SiO2, 2.4 percent Na2O, and 0.54 percent K2O. Apparently there was no significant crystal settling and no appreciable vapor-phase transport of these components during the year of crystallization. However, seven samples of interstitial liquid that had been filter-pressed into gash fractures and drill holes from partly crystalline mush near the base of the crust show large differences from the bulk composition of the solidified crust—lower MgO, CaO, and Al2O3; and higher total iron, TiO2, Na2O, K2O, P2O5, and F, and, in most samples, SiO2. The minor elements Ba, Ga, Li, Y, and Yb and possibly Cu tend to be enriched in the filter-pressed liquids, and Cr and possibly Ni tend to be depleted.  相似文献

The arrival at the Yellowknife Array (YKA) of closely-spaced P-waves having slightly different values ofdT/d, azimuth, and amplitude has been simulated using synthetic 1 Hz wavelets. Adaptive-processing determinations of apparent slowness and azimuth show a remarkable pattern of fluctuations with time for varying separations of the interfering pulses. In the critical separation range 0.30 to 0.55 s, these fluctuations greatly exceed the differences in arrival vectors of the primary wavelets themselves. Observation of characteristic interference patterns on real array seismograms might permit the identification of triplications associated with radial velocity anomalies in the lower mantle. Processed YKA seismograms for three events at distances close to 90° are presented, which, despite apparently simple P onsets illustrate the pattern of drift indT/d expected for such a triplication.Contribution from the Earth Physics Branch No. 648.  相似文献

A model has been developed which predicts the dispersion of splash droplets produced by the impact of a water drop on a sloping soil surface. Experimental results of the ejection velocities and ejection angles of the splash droplets are generalized to a planar slope and the resulting splash distances are calculated taking into account the effects of air resistance. The predictions are presented in terms of the numbers of splash droplets from the impact point to surrounding squares arranged in a grid on the slope. The model explains many experimentally observed features of raindrop splash in terms of the mechanics of the processes involved and can make predictions of the effects of slope, wind, raindrop size, and soil properties on droplet dispersion. The component of the raindrop velocity parallel to the surface of the slope is identified as the main factor determining the degree and the direction of the asymmetry in the splash droplet dispersion. By combining the model with a theory of the entrapment of soil in the splash droplets it is possible to extend it to predict the dispersion of soil particles by raindrop impact, which is the basis of a model of soil erosion by rainsplash.  相似文献

On 10 March, 1975, large amounts of steam were first sighted coming from the Sherman Crater of Mt. Baker, long the site of mild fumarole activity. To document and evaluate the new activity, we conducted a series of aerial and ground-based observations and experiments including the collection of samples within the crater, installation of 35-mm automatic sequence cameras at Park and Anderson Buttes, and overflights with a mapping camera and infrared scanner. Significant changes characterizing the new activity are: development of a new, energetic fumarole in an area of earlier mild activity; growth of crevasses within and concentric to the crater walls; collapse of a central 70 m diameter plug of ice to form a warm lake; and ejection of tephra rich in analcite and sulfides from the new fumarole. Although the tephra contains minor amounts of unaltered glass, it does not differ in this or other respects from material collected from the west crater wall, where fumaroles have long been active. This suggests that the glass is older tephra derived from the fumarole vent walls.Weather and lighting conditions were such that the Park Butte sequence camera provided acceptable images of the crater area on 27% of the frames for the period 1825 Pacific Daylight Time June 5 to 1825 PDT August 2. Of these, 8% show a significant plume (>300 m above the vent). Large plumes occur during favorable weather conditions of low wind and high relative humidity, and all appear white.While there are abundant manifestations of increased heat emission from Sherman Crater, there is as yet no sign of a fundamental change in the style of activity, or that the rise of fresh magma is the cause.  相似文献

 Pavese et al. (1999) examined cation partitioning vs. temperature in a synthetic spinel of composition (Mg0.70 Fe0.23 3+) Al1.97 O4 using structure data obtained from in situ neutron powder diffraction. After imposing assumptions on the site assignment of vacancies and Fe3+, they assigned the remaining cations by applying least-squares minimization to chemical constraints on site-occupancy sums, site-scattering, chemical composition, and thermal expansion of the octahedral site. Their proposed site assignments exhibit a sharp discontinuity in occupancy fractions versus temperature, a necessary consequence of their assumptions on vacancy assignments. In this paper we reexamine the cation partitioning of the same spinel using the constrained least-squares formulation of OccQP (Wright et al. 2000), which optimizes site occupancies without ad hoc assumptions. We obtain strikingly different results, supporting the general view that spinel undergoes a lambda transition at ∼1000 K. For all observed parameters, the residuals obtained with the OccQP assignments are lower than those obtained with the Pavese et al. assignments, in some cases by more than 1 order of magnitude.
