The Kuroshio current is well known for generating cold wakes behind islands over Izu Ridge in Northwestern Pacific. Observational data from the geostationary Himawari-8 satellite for 2015–2017 revealed the occurrence of cold waters during the period when the Kuroshio current flows away from the islands. With a focus on tidal currents, this study presents an investigation of dynamical processes responsible for the formation of areas with low sea surface temperature (SST) through the adoption of a high-resolution numerical ocean model for an event that happened in July 2017. Areas with cold water emerged only when tidal currents are included in the numerical model. The model results indicate the cold surface waters are formed in the vicinity of the islands because of upwelling and vertical mixing. Qualitative features of the cold water formation for each island are found to depend on its size, topography, and ambient currents. Near Kozu Island, the tidal excursion is large enough to cause eddy shedding. These shed eddies are stirred by tidal currents to extend the surface cooling effect to wider areas. Near Hachijo Island, a persistent wake is formed by the ambient northward current. Inclusion of tidal currents destabilizes the wake, and consequently leads to the formation of a low SST area, although no clear eddy shedding is detected. The flow patterns around the islands are classified using an additional non-dimensional parameter, defined as the ratio between tidal excursion and island diameter.
Chemical compositions of materials used for new sample holders (vertically aligned carbon nanotubes [VACNTs] and polyimide film), which were developed for the analysis of Hayabusa2‐return samples, were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis and/or instrumental photon activation analysis, to estimate contamination effects from the sample holders. The synthetic quartz plate used for the sample holders was also analyzed. Ten elements (Na, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Eu, W, Au, and Th) and 14 elements (Na, Al, K, Sc, Ti, Cr, Zn, Ga, Br, Sb, La, Eu, Ir, and Au) could be detected in the VACNTs and polyimide film, respectively. The VACNT data show that contamination by this material with respect to the Murchison meteorite is negligible in terms of the elemental ratios (e.g., Fe/Mn, Na/Al, and Mn/Cr) used for the classification of meteorites due to the extremely low density of VACNTs. However, for the Au/Cr ratio, even small degrees (1.7 wt%) of contamination by VACNTs will change the Au/Cr ratio. Elemental ratios used for the classification of meteorites are only influenced by large amounts of contamination (>60 wt%) of polyimide film, which is unlikely to occur. In contrast, detectable effects on Ti isotopic compositions are caused by >0.1 and >0.3 wt% contamination by VACNTs and polyimide film, respectively, and Hf isotopic changes are caused by >0.1 wt% contamination by VACNTs. The new sample holders (VACNTs and polyimide film) are suitable for chemical classification of Hayabusa2‐return samples, because of their ease of use, applicability to multiple analytical instruments, and low contamination levels for most elements. 相似文献
A numerical method has been developed for the dynamic analysis of a tall building structure with viscous dampers. Viscous dampers are installed between the top of an inverted V‐shaped brace and the upper beam on each storey to reduce vibrations during strong disturbances like earthquakes. Analytically, it is modelled as a multi‐degree‐of freedom (MDOF) system with the Maxwell models. First, the computational method is formulated in the time domain by introducing a finite element of the Maxwell model into the equation of motion in the discrete‐time system, which is based on the direct numerical integration. Next, analyses for numerical stability and accuracy of the proposed method are discussed. The results show its numerical stability. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the numerical analysis of a realistic building structure to demonstrate its practical validity. 相似文献
Point-positioning GPS-based wave measurements were conducted by deep ocean (over 5,000 m) surface buoys moored in the North West Pacific Ocean in 2009, 2012, and 2013. The observed surface elevation bears statistical characteristics of Gaussian, spectrally narrow ocean waves. The tail of the averaged spectrum follows the frequency to the power of ?4 slope, and the significant wave height and period satisfies the Toba’s 3/2 law. The observations compare well with a numerical wave hindcast. Two large freak waves exceeding 13 m in height were observed in October 2009 and three extreme waves around 20 m in height were observed in October 2012 and in January 2013. These extreme events are associated with passages of a typhoon and a mid-latitude cyclone. Horizontal movement of the buoy revealed that the orbital motion of the waves at the peak of the wave group mostly exceed the weakly nonlinear estimate. For some cases, the orbital velocity exceeded the group velocity, which might indicate a breaking event but is not conclusive yet. 相似文献
We investigated the feasibility of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to reproduce oceanic conditions south of Japan. We have
adopted the local ensemble transformation Kalman filter algorithm based on 20 members’ ensemble simulations of the parallelized
Princeton Ocean Model (the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model) with horizontal resolution of 1/36°. By assimilating satellite
sea surface height anomaly, satellite sea surface temperature, and in situ temperature and salinity profiles, we reproduced
the Kuroshio variation south of Japan for the period from 8 to 28 February 2010. EnKF successfully reproduced the Kuroshio
path positions and the water mass property of the Kuroshio waters as observed. It also detected the variation of the steep
thermohaline front in the Kii Channel due to the intrusion of the Kuroshio water based on the observation, suggesting efficiency
of EnKF for detection of open and coastal seas interactions with highly complicated spatiotemporal variability. 相似文献
We deployed a profiling buoy system incorporating a fast repetition rate fluorometer in the western subarctic Pacific and
carried out time-series observations of phytoplankton productivity from 9 June to 15 July 2006. The chlorophyll a (Chl a) biomass integrated over the euphotic layer was as high as 45–50 mg Chl a m−2 in the middle of June and remained in the 30–40 mg Chl a m−2 range during the rest of observation period; day-to-day variation in Chl a biomass was relatively small. The daily net primary productivity integrated over the euphotic layer ranged from 144 to 919 mg C m−2 day−1 and varied greatly, depending more on insolation rather than Chl a biomass. In addition, we found that part of primary production was exported to a 150-m depth within 2 days, indicating that
the variations in primary productivity quickly influenced the organic carbon flux from the upper ocean. Our results suggest
that the short-term variability in primary productivity is one of the key factors controlling the carbon cycle in the surface
ocean in the western subarctic Pacific. 相似文献
Spectroscopic observations of OH airglow undertaken on May 2, 2006 at Uji, Japan reveal variations in intensity and rotational temperature related to the passage of an atmospheric gravity wave. The variations exhibit a period of approximately 1 h and magnitudes of 2–6% in intensity and 0.5–2% in rotational temperature. The vertical wavelength and intrinsic frequency of the atmospheric gravity wave were determined from the horizontal wavelength derived by an OH airglow imager, the background horizontal wind velocity obtained by the middle and upper atmosphere (MU) radar, and the dispersion relationship. The observed variations are consistent with the values calculated using the model of Liu, A.Z., Swenson, G.R. [2003. A modeling study of O2 and OH airglow perturbations induced by atmospheric gravity waves. J. Geophys. Res. 108 (No. D4), 4151. doi:10.1029/2002JD002474]. 相似文献
