Polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, organotin compounds and triazines were quantified in sediments and bivalves collected in four areas on the Galician coast. One or several species were analysed at each site depending on their availability, including mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), cockles (Cerastoderma edule), clams (Venerupis pullastra and Ruditapes decussatus) and razor shells (Ensis siliqua). The general spatial distribution of contaminants was consistent in spite of the different sources of contamination. High inter-species variability was also observed. M. galloprovincialis and V. pullastra showed the highest levels of contaminants and intra-spatial variability, which highlights them as suitable species to be used as sentinel organisms. The area of O Burgo showed some worrisome results: PCB sediment concentrations were within the range that could cause biological effects. Also the level of heptachlor observed in V. pullastra was above limits accepted on edible seafood. Finally TBT concentration in mussels correlated with concentrations causing imposex in snails. 相似文献

Hindcast or wave reanalysis databases (WRDB) constitute a powerful source with respect to instrumental records in the design of offshore and coastal structures, since they offer important advantages for the statistical characterization of wave climate variables, such as continuous long time records of significant wave heights, mean and peak periods, etc. However, reanalysis data is less accurate than instrumental records, making extreme data analysis derived from WRDB prone to under predict design return period values. This paper proposes a mixed extreme value model to deal with maxima, which takes full advantage of both (i) hindcast or wave reanalysis and (ii) instrumental records, reducing the uncertainty in its predictions. The resulting mixed model consistently merges the information given by both kinds of data sets, and it can be applied to any extreme value analysis distribution, such as generalized extreme value, peaks over threshold or Pareto–Poisson. The methodology is illustrated using both synthetically generated and real data, the latter taken from a given location on the northern Spanish coast. 相似文献

Lobate scarps, thought to be the surface expression of large thrust faults, are the most spectacular contractional tectonic features visible on Mercury. Most lobate scarps follow a general and relatively simple pattern, with a roughly arcuate or linear form in plan view, and an asymmetric cross section characterized by a steeply rising scarp face and a gently declining back scarp. In this work, we study two peculiar and complex scarps in the Rembrandt region of Mercury through MESSENGER imagery. On the one hand, the formation of these scarps resulted in the deformation of features such as impact craters, fractures, extensional faults, and volcanic plains, while on the other hand, the deformed features partly influenced the formation of the scarps. Evidence for structural control on the formation of the scarps includes their orientation, segmentation, bifurcation, change in structural trend and dip orientation, and transition into high-relief ridges or wrinkle ridge morphologies in some cases. Thus, these two lobate scarps provide examples of complex geological relations among other features, expanding the recognized richness of mercurian geology. Also, the southern scarp records a complex history of contraction, suggesting that the development of some mercurian lobate scarps may be more complex than usually thought. 相似文献

We present a comparative study of photometric and dynamic properties of photospheric bright points (BPs) observed at the disk centre in the active region (AR) NOAA 10912 and in the quiet Sun. We found that the average concentration of BPs is 54% larger in the AR than in the quiet Sun. We also measure a decrease of the BP concentration and an increase of their size moving away from the AR centre. However, these variations can be ascribed to the variation of the spatial resolution and image quality in the field of view of the AR dataset. We also found that BPs in the quiet Sun are associated with larger downflow motions than those measured within the AR. Finally, from our measurements of contrast and velocity along the line of sight, we deduced that BPs are less bright in high magnetic flux density regions than in quiet regions, due to a lower efficiency of convection in the former regions. 相似文献

Three microbial consortia were isolated from three polluted soils located at an oil refinery and acclimated to grow on diesel fuel as the sole carbon source. Batch experiments were then conducted with the three consortia to study the kinetics of diesel biodegradation. The effects of temperature (25, 30 and 35?°C) and diesel concentration (0.5, 1 and 3?%) on the biodegradation of diesel were analysed. Several species were identified in the acclimated microbial consortia, and some of them appeared in more than one consortium. Thermal inhibition was observed at 35?°C. In the rest of experiments, over 80?% of the substrate was degraded after 40?h of treatment. These results proved the good feasibility of using the polluted sites as sources of mixed consortia for hydrocarbon degradation. However, diesel degradation efficiencies and rates were very similar, suggesting that the acclimation process produced mixed consortia with very similar characteristics; in this context, origin of the soil sample was not a decisive factor. A simple Monod-type kinetic model was used to simulate the biodegradation process, and accurate results were obtained. The ?? max values were between 0.17 and 0.34?h?1. The results of this study revealed that the consortia can function at high concentrations of hydrocarbons without any sign of growth inhibition, which is important for the design of bioreactors for wastewater treatment with high concentrations of fuel. 相似文献

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is now widely used in diverse disciplines to estimate model parameters and update model
states by integrating observed data. The EnKF is known to perform optimally only for multi-Gaussian distributed states and
parameters. A new approach, the normal-score EnKF (NS-EnKF), has been recently proposed to handle complex aquifers with non-Gaussian
distributed parameters. In this work, we aim at investigating the capacity of the NS-EnKF to identify patterns in the spatial
distribution of the model parameters (hydraulic conductivities) by assimilating dynamic observations in the absence of direct
measurements of the parameters themselves. In some situations, hydraulic conductivity measurements (hard data) may not be
available, which requires the estimation of conductivities from indirect observations, such as piezometric heads. We show
how the NS-EnKF is capable of retrieving the bimodal nature of a synthetic aquifer solely from piezometric head data. By comparison
with a more standard implementation of the EnKF, the NS-EnKF gives better results with regard to histogram preservation, uncertainty

Bay scallop (Argopecten irradians) populations existed in Chesapeake Bay until 1933, when they declined dramatically due to a loss of seagrass habitat. Since then, there have been no documented populations within the Bay. However, some anecdotal observations of live bay scallops within the lower Bay suggest that restoration of the bay scallop is feasible. We therefore tested whether translocated adults of the southern bay scallop, Argopecten irradians concentricus, could survive during the reproductive season in vegetated and unvegetated habitats of the Lynnhaven River sub-estuary of lower Chesapeake Bay in the absence of predation. Manipulative field experiments evaluated survival of translocated, caged adult scallops in eelgrass Zostera marina, macroalgae Gracilaria spp., oyster shell, and rubble plots at three locations. After a 3-week experimental period, scallop survival was high in vegetated habitats, ranging from 98% in their preferred habitat, Z. marina, to 90% in Gracilaria spp. Survival in Z. marina was significantly higher than that in rubble (76%) and oyster shell (78%). These findings indicate that reproductive individuals can survive in vegetated habitats of lower Chesapeake Bay when protected from predators and that establishment of bay scallop populations within Chesapeake Bay may be viable. 相似文献

The importance of the historical information in flood analysis has previously been underlined. In this context, we present an integral methodology aimed at the establishment of return periods of different flood units on the unique basis of historical data. Specifically, the reconstruction of the flood chronology extended back to 1900, complemented with a new (historical data-based) event intensity index, and the return period estimation will be addressed. Since some of the historical data are collected from interviews and other sources with different degrees of precision and reliability, two kinds of uncertainty will be considered; namely the statistical variability and the imprecision. We propose an innovative methodology involving intervals (ranges), fuzzy sets, and weights to formalize and average the criteria that determine the importance of the different events. On the other hand, to take into account the statistical variability, we propose to estimate the return period in a flexible and efficient way by considering bootstrap confidence intervals. The methodology is particularly useful at ungauged, or partially gauged, flood inundation areas, where the existing flow gauge stations do not give the flood series at the point of interest. A case study developed in Spain is discussed. The results are supported by two recent events, which have been mapped at 1:5000 scale. 相似文献

We have determined the meridional flows in subsurface layers for 18 Carrington rotations (CR 2097 to 2114) analyzing high-resolution Dopplergrams obtained with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We are especially interested in flows at high latitudes up to 75° in order to address the question whether the meridional flow remains poleward or reverses direction (so-called counter cells). The flows have been determined in depth from near-surface layers to about 16 Mm using the HMI ring-diagram pipeline. The measured meridional flows show systematic effects, such as a variation with the B 0-angle and a variation with central meridian distance (CMD). These variations have been taken into account to lead to more reliable flow estimates at high latitudes. The corrected average meridional flow is poleward at most depths and latitudes with a maximum amplitude of about $20~\mathrm{m\,s}^{-1}$ near 37.5° latitude. The flows are more poleward on the equatorward side of the mean latitude of magnetic activity at 22° and less poleward on the poleward side, which can be interpreted as convergent flows near the mean latitude of activity. The corrected meridional flow is poleward at all depths within ±?67.5° latitude. The corrected flow is equatorward only at 75° latitude in the southern hemisphere at depths between about 4 and 8 Mm and at 75° latitude in the northern hemisphere only when the B 0 angle is barely large enough to measure flows at this latitude. These counter cells are most likely the remains of an insufficiently corrected B 0-angle variation and not of solar origin. Flow measurements and B 0-angle corrections are difficult at the highest latitude because these flows are only determined during limited periods when the B 0 angle is sufficiently large. 相似文献
