Easter Island (SE Pacific, 27°S) provides a unique opportunity to reconstruct past climate changes in the South Pacific region based on terrestrial archives. Although the general climate evolution of the south Pacific since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is coherent with terrestrial records in southern South America and Polynesia, the details of the dynamics of the shifting Westerlies, the South Pacific Convergence Zone and the South Pacific Anticyclone during the glacial–interglacial transition and the Holocene, and the large scale controls on precipitation in tropical and extratropical regions remain elusive. Here we present a high-resolution reconstruction of lake dynamics, watershed processes and paleohydrology for the last 34 000 cal yrs BP based on a sedimentological and geochemical multiproxy study of 8 cores from the Raraku Lake sediments constrained by 22 AMS radiocarbon dates. This multicore strategy has reconstructed the sedimentary architecture of the lake infilling and provided a stratigraphic framework to integrate and correlate previous core and vegetation studies conducted in the lake. High lake levels and clastic input dominated sedimentation in Raraku Lake between 34 and 28 cal kyr BP. Sedimentological and geochemical evidences support previously reported pollen data showing a relatively open forest and a cold and relatively humid climate during the Glacial period. Between 28 and 17.3 cal kyr BP, including the LGM period, colder conditions contributed to a reduction of the tree coverage in the island. The coherent climate patterns in subtropical and mid latitudes of Chile and Eastern Island for the LGM (more humid conditions) suggest stronger influence of the Antarctic circumpolar current and an enhancement of the Westerlies. The end of Glacial Period occurred at 17.3 cal kyr BP and was characterized by a sharp decrease in lake level conducive to the development of major flood events and erosion of littoral sediments. Deglaciation (Termination 1) between 17.3 and 12.5 cal kyr BP was characterized by an increase in lake productivity, a decrease in the terrigenous input and a rapid lake level recovery, inaugurating a period of intermediate lake levels, dominance of organic deposition and algal lamination. The timing and duration of deglaciation events in Easter Island broadly agree with other mid- and low-latitude circum South Pacific terrestrial records. The transition to the Holocene was characterized by lower lake levels. The lake level dropped during the early Holocene (ca 9.5 cal kyr BP) and swamp and shallow lake conditions dominated till mid Holocene, partially favored by the infilling of the lacustrine basin. During the mid- to late-Holocene drought phases led to periods of persistent low water table, subaerial exposure and erosion, generating a sedimentary hiatus in the Raraku sequence, from 4.2 to 0.8 cal kyr BP. The presence of this dry mid Holocene phase, also identified in low Andean latitudes and in Patagonian mid latitudes, suggests that the shift of storm tracks caused by changes in the austral summer insolation or forced by “El Niño-like” dominant conditions have occurred at a regional scale. The palm deforestation of the Easter Island, attributed to the human impact could have started earlier, during the 4.2–0.8 cal kyr BP sedimentary gap. Our paleoclimatic data provides insights about the climate scenarios that could favor the arrival of the Polynesian people to the island. If it occurred at ca AD 800 it coincided with the warmer conditions of the Medieval Climate Anomaly, whereas if it took place at ca AD 1300 it was favored by enhanced westerlies at the onset of the Little Ice Age. The study of annual maximum rainfall intensity is quite difficult in Spain due to its limited recording rain gauges and short record lengths. This problem can't be solved applying classical regional approach, since scarce stations and great climate variability prevents forming homogeneous regions. The present study tries a new way of applying regionalization, a method which improves robustness, joining series with different durations (≤1 hour, > 1 hour) at the same station to form regions. Abstract— The Azuara structure is the largest one proposed so far in Spain as possibly related to a cosmic impact event. A review of the evidence set forward in favor of and against its cosmic origin indicates that the discussion is not yet finished. Some megascopic features (inverted stratigraphy, megabreccia, negative gravity anomalies) and shock‐metamorphic effects (planar deformational features) have been described in relation with the structure, although their real significance has been questioned and is still being debated. Comparison with other similar‐sized verified impacts suggests that unequivocal impactogenic features are yet to be found before the Azuara structure can be related to a cosmic impact. Until then, the Azuara structure should be considered as an unverified impact structure, and should not be included in global comprehensive maps of terrestrial impact structures. 相似文献

We present a new catalog of absolute nuclear magnitudes of Jupiter family (JF) comets, which is an updated version of our previous catalog [Tancredi, G., Fernández, J.A., Rickman, H., Licandro, J., 2000. Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. Ser. 146, 73-90]. From the new catalog we find a linear cumulative luminosity function (CLF) of slope 0.54±0.05 for JF comets with q?2.5 AU. By considering this CLF combined with the few measured geometric albedos with their respective uncertainties, and assuming a canonical albedo of 0.035±0.012 for those comets with undetermined albedos, we derive a cumulative size distribution that follows a power-law of index −2.7±0.3. The slope is similar to that derived from some theoretical collisional models and from some populations of Solar System bodies like the trans-neptunian objects. We also discuss and compare our size distribution with those by other authors that have recently appeared in the literature. Some striking differences in the computed slopes are explained in terms of biases in the studied samples, the different weights given to the brightest members of the samples, and discrepancies in the values of a few absolute nuclear magnitudes. We also compute sizes and fractions of active surface area of JF comets from their estimated absolute nuclear magnitudes and their water production rates. With the outgassing model that we use, about 60% of the computed fractions f of active surface area are found to be smaller than 0.2, with one case (28P/Neujmin 1) of no more than 0.001, which suggests that JF comets may transit through stages of very low activity, or even dormancy. There is an indication that JF comets with radii RN?3 km have active fractions f?0.01, which might be due to the rapid formation of insulating dust mantles on larger nuclei. 相似文献

The surface temperature of the Martian polar caps is about 148 K (frost point temperature of CO2 at a surface pressure of about 6 hPa), with the “desert” (frost-free) areas adjacent to the polar caps having much greater surface temperatures. The existence of this steep meridional gradient of temperature between the polar caps and the adjacent “desert” areas may produce in the atmosphere a baroclinic instability which generates an atmospheric circulation system similar in some aspects to the terrestrial sea breeze. We have called this circulation system the Martian polar cap breeze. In this paper, the phenomenology of the Martian polar cap breeze is developed on the basis of the indirect observational evidence. Along with friction and the Coriolis force, other factors influence the polar cap breeze: the prevailing wind, topography, irregularity of the polar cap-edge, and stability of the atmosphere. These factors are studied in a qualitative form, as well as the seasonal variations. In addition, the large-scale polar cap wind is presented as a different Martian atmospheric circulation system. 相似文献
