Grain size is a fundamental property of sediments and is commonly used to describe sedimentary facies and classify sedimentary environments. Among the various conventional techniques utilized to determine grain‐size frequency distributions, sieving is the most widely applied procedure. The accuracy of such analyses is, among other factors, strongly dependent on the sieving time. However, despite a substantial amount of research in this field, optimal sieving times for different types of sediments have, to date, not been established. In this article, the influence of sieving time on grain‐size analyses of medium‐grained microtidal and mesotidal beach and dune sands has been determined. To assess the precision of important textural parameters, such as median grain size, sorting, skewness and kurtosis, an error analysis was carried out for different sieving times (2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes). After calibrating the analytical and sampling methodologies, significant deviations were registered when sieving time was less than 10 minutes. However, such deviations were very small and grain‐size distributions remained almost identical for sieving times of 10 minutes and longer, relative errors being as low as 0% in some cases.  相似文献

The building losses in Adapazari following the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli earthquake are estimated for both ground-shaking and ground-failure induced damage and the predictions compared with field observations. The ground-shaking damage is estimated using the capacity spectrum approach and accommodating the results of a previously published calibration of this model. These results, which do not incorporate ground-failure damage, are compared to the observed damage patterns in Adapazari to illustrate the significance of not including the more complex ground failure component in a loss model for a region of high liquefaction susceptibility. A preliminary estimation of ground-failure-induced damage is then presented based upon the HAZUS (FEMA, 2003) default methodology. The benefits of these additional calculations to the overall loss model are assessed to provide some quantitative decision-making guidance for those producing loss estimation models. The findings suggest that the benefits of specifically incorporating ground failure into a loss model only start to be obtained if a detailed approach using in situ geotechnical data as well as adequate representation of building foundations is adopted. Otherwise, the additional input data required is not commensurate with the small potential refinement in the estimated losses, particularly considering the compounded uncertainties associated with the simplified approach.  相似文献

The geoidal geopotential value of W 0 = 62 636 856.0 ± 0.5m 2 s –2 , determined from the 1993 –1998 TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data, can be used to practically define and realize the World Height System. The W 0 -value can also uniquely define the geoidal surface and is required for a number of applications, including General Relativity in precise time keeping and time definitions. Furthermore, the W 0 -value provides a scale parameter for the Earth that is independent of the tidal reference system. All of the above qualities make the geoidal potential W 0 ideally suited for official adoption as one of the fundamental constants, replacing the currently adopted semi-major axis a of the mean Earth ellipsoid. Vertical shifts of the Local Vertical Datum (LVD) origins can easily be determined with respect to the World Height System (defined by W 0 ), in using the recent EGM96 gravity model and ellipsoidal height observations (e.g. GPS) at levelling points. Using this methodology the LVD vertical displacements for the NAVD88 (North American Vertical Datum 88), NAP (Normaal Amsterdams Peil), AMD (Australian Height Datum), KHD (Kronstadt Height Datum), and N60 (Finnish Height Datum) were determined with respect to the proposed World Height System as follows: –55.1 cm, –11.0 cm, +42.4 cm, –11.1 cm and +1.8 cm, respectively.  相似文献

Polymineralic aggregates composed of clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxide minerals, apatite and accessory K-feldspar, biotite, and amphibole are enclosed in cumulus plagioclase grains in the Middle Zone of the Skærgaard intrusion. The chemistry of the minerals in the aggregates, and the textural relations between the aggregates and the host plagioclase grains indicate that they represent inclusions of the contemporaneous melt of the Skærgaard intrusion. Through mass balance calculations a quantitative estimate of the melt composition for this level in the intrusion can be obtained, and this estimate confirms that the silica content in the Middle Zone melt was similar to, or possibly even lower than, the silica content in the initial Skærgaard melt, and relatively enriched in iron.  相似文献

Abstract— We have determined Nb, Y, and Zr abundances in the carbonaceous chondrites Orgueil (CI), Murray (CM2), Murchison (CM2), Allende (CV3), and Karoonda (CK4), and in the eucrites, Pasamonte and Juvinas, by a recently developed spark source mass spectrometric technique using multiple ion counting (MIC‐SSMS). The abundance of Ta was determined in the same meteorites by radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA). Precision of the MIC‐SSMS and RNAA techniques is ~3% and ≤ 5%, respectively. The new abundances for CI chondrites are: Nb = 0.247, Ta = 0.0142, Zr = 3.86, Y = 1.56 μg/g; or 0.699, 0.0202, 11.2, and 4.64 atoms/106 Si atoms, respectively. The values agree with earlier compilations, but they are a factor of 2 more precise than earlier analyses. Trace element concentrations in the CM, CV, and CK chondrites are higher than in the CI chondrite Orgueil by about 37, 86, and 120%, respectively, in agreement with the variable absolute contents of refractory lithophile elements in different groups of carbonaceous chondrites. Of particular interest are the chondritic Nb/Ta, Zr/Nb, and Nb/U ratios, because these ratios are important tools for interpreting the chemical evolution of planetary bodies. We obtained Nb/Ta = 17.4 ± 0.5 for the carbonaceous chondrites and the Juvinas‐type eucrites investigated. Though this value is similar to previous estimates, it is much more precise. The same is true for Zr/Nb (15.5 ± 0.2) and Zr/Y (2.32 ± 0.12). In combination with recently published MIC‐SSMS U data for carbonaceous chondrites, we obtained a chondritic Nb/U ratio of 29 ± 2. Because Nb, Ta, Zr, Y, and U are refractory lithophile elements and presumably partitioned into the silicate phase of the Earth during core formation, the elemental ratios may also be used to constrain evolution of the Earth's primitive mantle and, with the more precise determinations fractionation of Nb and Ta during magmatic processes and mantle‐crust interactions, can now be interpreted with greater confidence.  相似文献

Tree rings representing the period from the mid-1950s up to 2001 were studied as part of an investigation of anthropogenic radionuclide input to terrestrial systems. A live specimen of Pinus sylvestris from the east coast of Ireland was felled, sampled and analysed for comparison with a similar tree felled close to the Atlantic seaboard on the west coast of Ireland. Data for the tree ring sequences were examined relative to the radionuclide content of peat profiles sampled in close proximity to the locations of the studied Pine trees.The data indicate that 14C concentrations in tree ring sequences from the east and west coasts of Ireland are virtually identical. The sequences show maximum 14C concentrations (185 and 189 pMC at east and west coast sites, respectively) that correspond closely with published data for atmospheric levels during the height of the nuclear weapons test period (1945-1980). The tree ring count for the specimen from the east coast places the 14C peak precisely at 1964, the year following the known peak in atmospheric concentrations due to above ground testing of nuclear weapons. However, 14C data show that simple ring counting of the west coast tree did not provide an accurate chronology. The data demonstrate the importance of applying dendrodating techniques using replicated site chronologies, and the value of the 14C bomb fallout curve for the construction of recent chronologies. Data show no evidence of enhanced uptake at the east coast that might suggest incorporation of output from the Sellafield nuclear complex or from the release of radioactivity resulting from an accidental fire at the plant in 1957.  相似文献

The morpho-sedimentary evolution of the Choisille floodplain (lowland river, catchment: 288 km2), a tributary of the River Loire in the south-western Parisian Basin, was studied through 61 core drillings along eight transects and a geophysical survey located in four stretches of the river: stretches A and B correspond to two sub-catchments, and stretches C and D are in the main valley. Sixty 14C and four OSL datings were obtained, and sediments were analysed on seven reference cores. Eight phases of evolution differing markedly from the evolution of more northern areas in the Parisian Basin and north-western Europe were identified from spatio-temporal distribution of nine lithological facies. The deepest incision phase (1) occurred during the first part of the Weichselian, followed by the deposition of a gravelly-sandy unit (phase 2) during the Middle Pleniglacial, which was deeply incised (phase 3), probably during the Bölling. From the Allerød up to the last third of the Boreal (phase 4), sedimentation was continuously dominated by peaty deposits, with no evidence of either increased hydraulic energy during the Younger Dryas, or of incision during the LateGlacial–Holocene transition. This trend seems to reflect the specificity of the south-western Parisian Basin climate from the Late Weichselian up to the end of the Boreal, due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, compared to more northern areas where the climate was more continental. The downstream incision trend during the last third of the Boreal up to the Subatlantic (phases 5 and 6) indicates a sharp increase in precipitation and vegetation cover; the lack of peaty sediments, widespread in north-western Europe, and also of precipitated carbonates frequent in the Parisian Basin, seems to be due to local physiographic characteristics. The main part of the sediment filling, which is principally silty and retrograde, began during the Subatlantic (phase 7 and 8) as a result of deforestation of the plateaux for crop farming. High human-induced sediment yield and storage concealed the possible impacts of climate change on fluvial dynamics: lithological facies change from phase 7 to 8 can only indicate the autogenic morphological evolution of the floodplain in accretion. The non-univocal upstream–downstream variation in the start of phase 7 shows that sediment yield varied in space and time in the catchment, particularly in relation to the agricultural potential of the different areas; this observation could be used to testify human-induced sedimentation in other catchments.  相似文献

Abstract— The enstatite chondrite reckling peak (rkp) a80259 contains feldspathic glass, kamacite, troilite, and unusual sets of parallel fine‐grained enstatite prisms that formed by rapid cooling of shock melts. Metallic Fe,Ni and troilite occur as spherical inclusions in feldspathic glass, reflecting the immiscible Fe‐Ni‐S and feldspathic melts generated during the impact. The Fe‐Ni‐S and feldspathic liquids were injected into fractures in coarse‐grained enstatite and cooled rapidly, resulting in thin (≤ 10 μm) semicontinuous to discontinuous veins and inclusion trails in host enstatite. Whole‐rock melt veins characteristic of heavily shocked ordinary chondrites are conspicuously absent. Raman spectroscopy shows that the feldspathic material is a glass. Elevated MgO and SiO2 contents of the glass indicate that some enstatite and silica were incorporated in the feldspathic melt. Metallic Fe,Ni globules are enclosed by sulfide and exhibit Nienrichment along their margins characteristic of rapid crystallization from a Fe‐Ni‐S liquid. Metal enclosed by sulfide is higher in Si and P than metal in feldspathic glass and enstatite, possibly indicating lower O fugacities in metal/sulfide than in silicate domains. Fine‐grained, elongate enstatite prisms in troilite or feldspathic glass crystallized from local pyroxene melts that formed along precursor grain boundaries, but most of the enstatite in the target rock remained solid during the impact and occurs as deformed, coarsegrained crystals with lower CaO, Al2O3, and FeO than the fine‐grained enstatite. Reckling Peak A80259 represents an intermediate stage of shock melting between unmelted E chondrites and whole‐rock shock melts and melt breccias documented by previous workers. The shock petrogenesis of RKPA80259 reflects the extensive impact processing of the enstatite chondrite parent bodies relative to those of other chondrite types.  相似文献

导航卫星的自主定轨是提高卫星导航系统生存能力的一个重要手段,在解决导航星座自主定轨中涉及到高精度的轨道预报,提高轨道预报精度对于自主定轨精度有着重要意义。针对利用动力学模型得到的预报轨道随时间推移精度衰减较快的问题,本文提出了一种改进北斗导航卫星中长期轨道预报精度的新方法。利用神经网络作为建立预报模型的工具,在动力学模型的基础上建立神经网络模型,通过对历史时刻预报误差的学习及训练,掌握其变化规律,再用于补偿和改进当前时刻的预报轨道,以达到提高预报精度的目的。本文制定了导航卫星轨道中长期预报方案,并利用实测数据进行了实验分析,结果表明,采用神经网络模型补偿预报轨道误差时,不同卫星在不同初始时刻下的改进效果是不同的。预报15d导航卫星的轨道精度由318m提高至19m,预报30d轨道精度由1757m 提高至49m。预报15d、 30d轨道改进幅度分别为41%~80%/32%~88%。  相似文献
