Seismic Signature of the Haughton Structure

Abstract— The western flank of the Haughton impact structure was imaged with a reflection profile generating 9.8 km of subsurface information. Ten reflecting horizons were recognized and have been correlated via a sonic log with the Paleozoic limestone/dolomite rock sequences. The seismic section is dominated by a dense and complex compound fault system with variable attitudes. These steeply dipping faults penetrated the sedimentary rocks but showed no recognizable extension into the crystalline basement. According to the seismically recognized fracture zones of the western margin, the structure is significantly larger than previously estimated. Reconstruction of the crater on the basis of the seismic information and existing scaling relationships reveals a structure with an apparent diameter of 23.9 km, and an excavated cavity of 10.3 km width and 1.97 km depth. The estimated diameters of the transient crater and the central uplift are 12 km and 11 km respectively. The morphologically distinct ring zones do not have seismically recognizable subsurface signatures. The underlying crystalline basement rocks did not exhibit seismically mappable impact-related zones of disturbance. In the central interior region, coherent reflection signals are virtually absent. Valuable information for this area was provided by a 10.26 km long refraction profile that indicated nearly uniform velocities (～5000 m/s) to a considerable depth. Major lateral variations in the velocity field across the structure were not detected.     

An analytic model of the Earth's magnetosphere

An analytic magnetic field model for the Earth's magnetosphere is constructed from a dipole field and a tail field. This model can be taken as a generalization of the Dungey's model, after one adds to it a horizontal component. The magnetic topology in the noon-midnight meridian plane of this model is fully determined and it is compared with the topology of other models. In this study it is found that, for a specific value of the parameterk, which is associated to any form of the model, the noon's side neutral points obey a bifurcation scheme.     

The mulberry dike-carp pond resource system of the Zhujiang (Pearl River) Delta,People's Republic of China: I. Environmental context and system overview

Although not well understood scientifically, integrated and diversified aquaculture-agriculture systems have a history of some two millennia in parts of South and Southeast Asia. With the extremely limited farm area and scanty resources available to the typical small-scale farmer of these regions, integrated agro-ecosystems, based on generations of empirical knowledge, provide a balanced diet and often a small marketable surplus for poor rural households, while continuously recycling nutrients and energy through the system, producing little waste, and maintaining a local ecological balance. Despite the few scientific data available on such systems, they are being widely advocated for use in developing countries with no prior experience of integrated farming.This paper (paper I) describes the environmental context and provides an overview of the mulberry dike-polycultural carp pond resource system of Leliu Commune, in the Zhujiang Delta of the People's Republic of China, where complex and highly productive integrated farming systems are operated on a geographical and economic scale unmatched elsewhere. Subsequent papers will focus on the human ecology of the dike-pond system, the ecological basis for system integration, and the results and implications of experiments and trials for increasing the productivity of and the economic rate of return from the system.     

Light-curve analysis of Z Herculis

The blue and yellow light curves of the RS CVn-type eclipsing binary Z Her were analyzed by using Wood's and Nelson. Davis and Etzel's methods. The results obtained by two different approaches are in good agreement. The absolute parameters of the components were also calculated using the parameters derived by Popper from the radial velocities. The physical parameters of the components indicate that the cooler one has separated or has been departing from the Main Sequence.     

Investigation of five white light flares

On the basis of original observations, five white-light flares (WLF) are investigated. Evidence is given that their emission is located in two points brightening on either side of the lineH _∥ = 0 and lying at the foot points of chromospheric loops. The area of WLF is ≈ 5 × 10^?6 hemisphere, i.e. ≈ 0.007 of Hα flare area; the intensity of WLF is sometimes twice that of the background at the center of the disk. WLF are resolved into more bright and fine knots of ≈ 2′ in diameter. The position of WLF coincides with the brightest knots of Hα flares which are characterized by wide wings with rapid increase and decrease. According to our estimates, the full output of the energy of a flare in the continuum and Hα are comparable; but, the energy emitted in integral light in time-unit through area-unit is by 2 orders of magnitude larger than the energy in monochromatic light.
