Permeability, storage capacity and volumetric strain were measured in situ during deformation of hot-pressed calcite aggregates containing 10, 20, and 30 wt% quartz. Both isostatic and conventional
triaxial loading conditions were used. The tests were performed at confining pressure of 300 MPa, pore pressures between 50
to 290 MPa, temperatures from 673 to 873 K and strain rates of 3 × 10−5 s−1. Argon gas was used as the pore fluid. The initial porosities of the starting samples varied from 5% to 9%, with higher porosity
correlated to higher quartz content. Microstructural observations after the experiment indicate two kinds of pores are present:
1) Angular, crack-like pores along boundaries between quartz grains or between quartz and calcite grains and 2) equant and
tubular voids within the calcite matrix. Under isostatic loading conditions, the compaction rate covaries with porosity and
increases with increasing effective pressure. Most of the permeability reduction induced during compaction is irreversible
and probably owes to plastic processes. As has been found in previous studies on hot-pressed calcite aggregates, permeability,
k, is nonlinearly related to porosity, ϕ. Over small changes in porosity, the two parameters are approximately related as k ∝ ϕn. The exponent n strongly increases as porosity decreases to a finite value (from about 4 to 6% depending on quartz content), suggesting a
porosity percolation threshold. When subjected to triaxial deformation, the calcite-quartz aggregates exhibit shear-enhanced
compaction, but permeability does not decrease as rapidly as it does under isostatic conditions. During triaxial compaction
the exponent n only varies between 2 and 3. Non-isostatic deformation seems to reduce the percolation threshold, and, in fact, enhances
the permeability relative to that at the same porosity during isostatic compaction. Our data provide constraints on the governing
parameters of the compaction theory which describes fluid flow through a viscous matrix, and may have important implications
for expulsion of sedimentary fluids, for fluid flow during deformation and metamorphism, and melt extraction from partially

We evaluate in this paper the ability of several altimeter systems, considered separately as well as together with tide gauges,
to control the time evolution of a barotropic model of the North Sea shelf. This evaluation is performed in the framework
of the particular model errors due to uncertainties in bathymetry. An Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) data assimilation approach
is adopted, and observing-systems simulation experiments (OSSEs) are carried out using ensemble spread statistics. The skill
criterion for the comparison of observing networks is, therefore, not based on the misfit between two simulations, as done
in classic twin experiments, but on the reduction of ensemble variance occurring as a consequence of the assimilation. Future
altimeter systems, such as the Wide Swath Ocean Altimeter (WSOA) and satellite constellations, are considered in this work.
A single WSOA exhibits, for instance, similar performance as two-nadir satellites in terms of sea-level correction, and is
better than three satellites in terms of model velocity control. Generally speaking, the temporal resolution of observations
is shown to be of major importance for controlling the model error in these experiments. This result is clearly related to
the focus adopted in this study on the specific high-frequency response of the ocean to meteorological forcing. Altimeter
systems lack adequate temporal sampling for properly correcting the major part of model error in this context, whereas tide
gauges, which provide a much finer time resolution, lead to better global statistical performance. When looking into further
detail, tide gauges and altimetry are demonstrated to exhibit an interesting complementary character over the whole shelf,
as tide gauge networks make it possible to properly control model error in a ∼100-km coastal band, while high-resolution altimeter
systems are more efficient farther from the coast. 相似文献

Sequential aerial photographs of a small headwater catchment in the Waiapu basin, East Coast Region, North Island, New Zealand, were interpreted to measure and analyse temporal changes in active area of gullies and gully complexes for a longer time span (1939–2003) and with higher temporal resolution compared to previous studies. We focus on the conditions leading to the development of gullies and gully complexes under pasture and forest by using topographic thresholds (slope–area relationships) of catchments for the initiation of gullies and gully complexes. In addition, the influence of two different lithologies as well as the occurrence of major rainfall events was related to gully activity. Twenty gullies and four gully complexes (occupying 62·5 ha or 12·5 per cent of the catchment area) occurred in the study catchment between 1939 and 2003. However, the majority of these were not active at all of the dates studied. Gullies developed in the sandstone‐dominated Tapuwaeroa Formation tended to attain their maximum size by 1957 with a mean catchment area of 2·1 ha. Gullies developed in mudstone of the Whangai Formation attained their maximum size in 1939 with a mean catchment area of 4·31 ha. Exceptions are gullies which developed into mass movement deposits or into an earth flow deposit as well as gullies developed under indigenous forest. Topographic threshold values for gullies under pasture and indigenous forest show that values for gullies under forest plot far above the threshold line of gullies under pasture, indicating that the topographical threshold for gully development under forest is higher compared to under pasture. A threshold value of 9·4 ha in catchment area is needed for the development of gully complexes under pasture, all located in the Whangai Formation and with the same orientation as the strike of the mudstones. Gully‐complex area and dominance of mass‐movement erosion increased with larger catchment area. A decreasing distance to the threshold line for gullies under pasture indicates a later development for gully complexes. No gully complexes developed under indigenous forest, indicating that the threshold value for gully‐complex development is higher than for gully complexes under pasture and was not reached in the study area. A model of shifting topographical threshold for gully development for a given catchment is developed which depends on land use. When a catchment has an indigenous forest cover the topographical threshold is very high. After conversion to pasture, threshold values decrease drastically. With the invasion of scrub, the threshold slowly increases and returns to a similar level to that under indigenous forest after reforestation. Development of gullies and gully complexes is a highly dynamic phenomenon, and phases of expansion and inactivity indicate that models describing only unidirectional advancing stages without periods of inactivity are not suitable. Therefore, this study adds more phases to models of gully and gully‐complex development in the East Coast Region. The threshold line for gully initiation under pasture and a value of 9·4 ha in catchment area for gully‐complex initiation permits one to predict which catchments, under similar environmental settings, develop gullies and gully complexes on a physical basis. A data space approach to magnetotelluric (MT) inversion reduces the size of the system of equations that must be solved from M × M , as required for a model space approach, to only N × N , where M is the number of model parameter and N is the number of data. This reduction makes 3-D MT inversion on a personal computer possible for modest values of M and N . However, the need to store the N × M sensitivity matrix J remains a serious limitation. Here, we consider application of conjugate gradient (CG) methods to solve the system of data space Gauss–Newton equations. With this approach J is not explicitly formed and stored, but instead the product of J with an arbitrary vector is computed by solving one forward problem. As a test of this data space conjugate gradient (DCG) algorithm, we consider the 2-D MT inverse problem. Computational efficiency is assessed and compared to the data space Occam's (DASOCC) inversion by counting the number of forward modelling calls. Experiments with synthetic data show that although DCG requires significantly less memory, it generally requires more forward problem solutions than a scheme such as DASOCC, which is based on a full computation of J . 相似文献

Fracturing associated with the nickeliferous mineralisations of New Caledonia has been successively considered as pre-dating and then post-dating the metallogenic processes. On the basis of a study of the dynamics of karst contemporaneous with lateritisation, a new emplacement model is proposed for the mineralisation: a network of hydraulic fractures of the crack-seal type governs the emplacement of mineralisation, associated with a network of normal faults that controls the sinking and evacuation of the karst products. Meteoric infiltration influence on large mountainous rock slopes stability is investigated by comparing hydrogeologic and gravitational structures from detailed mapping of the ‘La Clapière’ slope. The slope infiltrated waters are trapped in a perched aquifer that is contained in deposits inside tensile cracks of the upper part of the slope. Flow rates of 0.4 to 0.8 l?s?1 from the perched aquifer to the landslide cause landslide accelerations. Numerical modeling shows that a 0.75 l?s?1 infiltration yield increases conditions for toppling with failure through tilting of large rock volumes from the perched aquifer bottom down to the foot of the slope. Applying a two-dimensional, non-linear hydrodynamic numerical model in combination with a semiempirical equation for bedload
sediment transport, the influence of geometry on the formation of sandbanks is investigated. In the first experiment, the
formation of sandbanks in an ideal rectangular basin, resembling the Taylor’s problem, was calculated. Sandbanks occur in
a small area at the closed boundary. Similar experiments were carried out for a range of wavelengths of the incident Kelvin
wave. The results reveal that large wavelengths favor the generation of sandbanks. In subsequent calculations, the basin was
modified by introducing new geographical features like bays and peninsulas. The numerical experiments show that geometry is
a fundamental factor to determine the position where groups of sandbanks appear. The results suggest that in regions where
the Kelvin wave is diffracted, the formation of sandbanks occurs. An experiment, in which we applied an ideal geometric configuration
representing that of the Southern Bight of the North Sea, generated sandbank patterns resembling those observed in the region. 相似文献

Abstract In southern New Caledonia, Late Oligocene granodiorite and adamellite are intruded into an ultramafic allochthon emplaced in the Late Eocene period. Previous studies of these granitoids proposed an origin associated with the melting of the underlying continental crust, but our new data show that these high-K to medium-K calc-alkaline granitoids display the geochemical and isotopic features of volcanic arc magmas uncontaminated by crust-derived melts. These magmas were probably generated in a post-Eocene and pre-Miocene subduction, the geophysical traces of which have been detected along the western coast of New Caledonia. Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios indicate derivation from an almost isotopically homogeneous mantle wedge, but in contrast, some variation in trace element ratios uncorrelated to differentiation is indicative of source heterogeneity. Prominent heavy rare earth element (HREE) depletion of some of the younger granitoids may be the result of an equilibrium achieved with garnet-bearing subcrustal material (granulite) found as xenoliths, while a relative Nb, Ta and Hf enrichment, irrespective of crystal fractionation, may be related to either a modest contamination by previously underplated mafic material, heterogeneous hydration of the mantle wedge, or mixing with uplifted Nb-rich mantle. Post-obduction slab break-off can be proposed to have played a role in sublithospheric mantle mixing and the subsequent heterogeneity. The Late Oligocene subduction described here may be tentatively extended southward into northern New Zealand allochthons. 相似文献
