Fracturing associated with the nickeliferous mineralisations of New Caledonia has been successively considered as pre-dating and then post-dating the metallogenic processes. On the basis of a study of the dynamics of karst contemporaneous with lateritisation, a new emplacement model is proposed for the mineralisation: a network of hydraulic fractures of the crack-seal type governs the emplacement of mineralisation, associated with a network of normal faults that controls the sinking and evacuation of the karst products. Meteoric infiltration influence on large mountainous rock slopes stability is investigated by comparing hydrogeologic and gravitational structures from detailed mapping of the ‘La Clapière’ slope. The slope infiltrated waters are trapped in a perched aquifer that is contained in deposits inside tensile cracks of the upper part of the slope. Flow rates of 0.4 to 0.8 l?s?1 from the perched aquifer to the landslide cause landslide accelerations. Numerical modeling shows that a 0.75 l?s?1 infiltration yield increases conditions for toppling with failure through tilting of large rock volumes from the perched aquifer bottom down to the foot of the slope. A data space approach to magnetotelluric (MT) inversion reduces the size of the system of equations that must be solved from M × M , as required for a model space approach, to only N × N , where M is the number of model parameter and N is the number of data. This reduction makes 3-D MT inversion on a personal computer possible for modest values of M and N . However, the need to store the N × M sensitivity matrix J remains a serious limitation. Here, we consider application of conjugate gradient (CG) methods to solve the system of data space Gauss–Newton equations. With this approach J is not explicitly formed and stored, but instead the product of J with an arbitrary vector is computed by solving one forward problem. As a test of this data space conjugate gradient (DCG) algorithm, we consider the 2-D MT inverse problem. Computational efficiency is assessed and compared to the data space Occam's (DASOCC) inversion by counting the number of forward modelling calls. Experiments with synthetic data show that although DCG requires significantly less memory, it generally requires more forward problem solutions than a scheme such as DASOCC, which is based on a full computation of J .  相似文献

There is an important volume of published information on Lac Dufault (Québec) which describes the history of metal inputs over 70 years and the changes that occurred in the lake as a result of this contamination. We used this abundant source of chronological markers to test the hypothesis that lake sediments can provide true historical records of trace metal loading from metal mining. Sediment cores were obtained from the deepest zone of the lake (19 m). The sediments were dated using 210Pb and 137Cs and they were analyzed for total elemental concentrations (Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, P, Pb, S, Zn). Metal profiles in the sediment core preserved the distinct signatures of different mine exploitations documented in the lake watershed. In particular, the core recorded: the beginning of industrialization in 1926; increasing sedimentation rates associated with perturbations in the lake watershed; the maximum of sediment [Cu] and the contemporary exploitation of ore bodies rich in Cu; the maximum of sediment [Fe] and the contemporary production of pyrite by a mining operation; the low sediment [Cu] and [Zn] in the 1950s and the low contemporary production of these metals by mining operations; the maximum of sediment [Cd] and the contemporary production of Cd by a subsequent mining operation. Anomalies in the distribution of 214Pb activities in sediments reflected the intensity of acid mine drainage (AMD). There is good evidence that the lake resisted acidification from this AMD for the last thirty years. Overall, our results support the thesis that profiles of sedimentary Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe levels reflect the past history of metal input to Lac Dufault.  相似文献

Wide collection on the historic records of the climatic changes and flood events is performed in the Yangtze Delta. Man-Kendall (MK) method is applied to explore the changing trends of the time series of the flood discharge and the maximum high summer temperature. The research results indicate that the flood magnitudes increased during the transition from the medieval warm interval into the early Little Ice Age. Fluctuating climate changes of the Little Ice Age characterized by arid climate events followed by the humid and cold climate conditions give rise to the frequent flood hazards. Low-lying terrain made the study region prone to the flood hazards, storm tide and typhoon. MK analysis reveals that the jumping point of the time series of the flood discharge changes occurred in the mid-1960s, that of the maximum summer temperature changes in the mid-1990s, and the exact jump point in 1993. The flood discharge changes are on negative trend before the 1990s, they are on positive tendency after the 1990s; the maximum high summer temperature changes are on negative trend before the 1990s and on positive tendency after the 1990s. These results indicate that the trend of flood discharge matches that of the maximum high summer temperature in the Yangtze Delta. The occurrence probability of the maximum high summer temperature will be increasing under the climatic warming scenario and which will in turn increase the occurrence probability of the flood events. More active solar action epochs and the higher sea surface temperature index (SST index) of the south Pacific Ocean area lying between 4oN-4oS and 150oW-90oW correspond to increased annual precipitation, flood discharge and occurrence frequency of floods in the Yangtze Delta. This is partly because the intensified solar activities and the higher SST index give rise to accelerated hydrological circulation from ocean surface to the continent, resulting in increased precipitation on the continent.  相似文献

The earliest marine sediments of eastern Corsica, linked to the birth of the Corsica Basin, are represented by granitic breccia of the Saint-Antoine Formation and pelagic marls of the Alzelle Formation. They are dated as Mid-Burdigalian by nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera (relative age and grade datings between 18.7 and 18.3 Ma). The Aghione Formation (Latest Burdigalian–Langhian) lies upon the Alzelle Formation. A component of the major East-Corsican faults, the Saint-Antoine Fault, underwent extensional activity during the Burdigalian and until the Late Miocene, when occurred the uplift of the Castagniccia antiform. A survey of soil gas radon concentrations has been carried out at three sites, in the seismic area of Armenia, from 1996 to 1999. The seismicity generates opposed behaviours at the different sites. This heterogeneity is related to the sites locations in the tectonic frame. An increase of radon concentration occurs inside the tectonic micro-blocks during local seismic activity. On the contrary, an abrupt co-seismic decrease is recorded close to the fault area. These variations can be due to ‘pore-collapse’ phenomena which expulse the pore-gas and increases Rn concentration in soil at intra-blocs sites, but also to pore-elastic deformations and microfracturing modifications in the fault area. The morphology of fast to ultra-fast oceanic spreading ridges such as the East Pacific Rise (EPR) is characterized by an axial dome, 5–10 km wide, culminating at 300–500 m above the surrounding seafloor. This dome is bounded by lateral grabens that develop systematically 2 to 6 km apart from the spreading axis. A large summit trough, 200 m to 2 km wide, locally notches the axial high, only where the dome is inflated, indicative of a time-average robust magma supply. This summit trough is thought to represent an elongated axial summit caldera (ASC) created as a result of the subsidence of the top of the axial magma chamber (AMC). Such subsidence is likely caused by a temporary decrease in melt supply into the shallow magma reservoir suffering continuous regional extension. Analog experiments using small-scale modeling have been performed in order to better constrain the tectonic evolution of the axial region. The experimental apparatus includes an elongated balloon filled with water as an analog of the magma reservoir set in a central groove in a table. It is capped with a silicone layer representing hot rocks below the brittle–ductile transition and is covered by a sand layer representing the brittle crust. The experiments integrate withdrawal of the balloon and extension at the boundary of the model by the mean of two mobile walls. Three experimental setups allowed us to study independently the mechanical parameters controlling the axial tectonic evolution: extension without withdrawal, withdrawal without extension, withdrawal and synchronous extension. We show that the morphology of the EPR axis can be considered as the result of both horizontal and vertical movements. Two symmetrical lateral grabens develop on both sides of a non-deformed axial dome when single extension is applied to a model with a thin silicone layer. Normal faults of the lateral grabens are rooted on two divergent velocity zones (DVZs) located on the edges of the groove. This situation is regarded as an analog of the natural case where the top of the AMC acts as a stress-free boundary that fails to transmit the extensional stresses to the upper brittle layer. An important deflation of the balloon without extension results in the creation of a central collapse trough limited by reverse faults. During synchronous extension and withdrawal, the initiation of the lateral grabens is favored by a balloon deflation, even if such deflation is unable to generate a superficial collapse. This last case is considered as representative of the evolution of EPR segments showing little variations in melt supply into the AMC. Higher deflation rates under continuous extension correspond to EPR segments undergoing strong variations in melt supply. In such experiments, the lateral grabens are created together with a central collapse trough developing in a way similar to that of experiments involving only balloon deflation. Finally, we show that DVZs located at the brittle–ductile boundary are the key mechanical elements which may explain the structural evolution of the axial region of fast to ultra-fast spreading ridges.
