The geological story of Kansas is told through the rocks that are present. It is a simple story in generalities but complex
in detail. Knowing the story, gives insight into understanding the occurrence and location of possible economic valuable minerals,
such as petroleum. This is a brief review of Kansas geology with respect to the known occurrence of oil and gas. Kansas is
part of the Midcontinent oil province with oil having been discovered 150 years ago and commercial production commencing in
1873. Although many prospects remain in Kansas, the state has gone from the number 1 producer in the U.S. in 1916 to 8th today.
Exploration for new oil and gas production therefore is going to have to be more imaginative and utilize new approaches and
techniques to find the elusive petroleum. There are possibilities however for the prospector who can search diligently. Although
the big fields probably have been discovered, the prospects today are deeper, in more undetectable traps, and in essentially

Improving the understanding of cropland change and its driving factors is a current focus for policy decision-makers in China. The datasets of cropland and cropland changes from the 1970s to the 2000s were used to explore whether climate change has produced spatio-temporal changes to cropland in northern China since the 1970s. Two representative indicators of heat and water resources, which are important determinants of crop growth and productivity, were considered to track climate change, including active accumulated temperatures ≥10 °C (AAT10) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). Our results showed that rapid cropland change has occurred in northern China since the 1970s, and the area of cropland reclamation (10.23 million ha) was much greater than that of abandoned cropland (2.94 million ha). In the 2000s, the area of cropland with AAT10 higher than 3,000 °C·d increased, while the area of cropland with an SPEI greater than 0.25 decreased compared to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. It appears that climate warming has provided thermal conditions that have aided rapid cropland reclamation in northern China since the 1970s, and drier climatic conditions did not become a limiting factor for cropland reclamation, especially from the 1990s to the 2000s. Approximately 70 % of cropland reclamation areas were located in warmer but drier regions from the 1990s to the 2000s, and approximately 40 % of cropland abandonment occurred in warmer and wetter conditions that were suitable for agriculture during the periods from the 1970s to the 1980s and the 1990s to the 2000s. Our results suggest that climate change can be considered a driving factor of cropland change in the past several decades in northern China, in addition to socioeconomic factors. 相似文献

As part of the 2000 Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS), we studied the isoprene oxidation process under ambient conditions to
discern the presence of chlorine atom (Cl) chemistry in the Houston, Texas urban area. By measuring chloromethylbutenone (CMBO)
and an isomer of chloromethylbutenal (CMBA), we clearly observed sixteen episodes of active Cl chemistry during the 24-day
experiment. Estimated median Cl concentration during each of these episodes was between the detection limit of ~102 atoms cm−3 and 50 - 30 + 70 ×104 50_{ - 30}^{ + 70} \times {10^4} atoms cm−3. Cl concentration during all the episodes averaged 7.6 - 2.0 + 4.7 ×104 7.6_{ - 2.0}^{ + 4.7} \times {10^4} atoms cm−3 and thus amounted to less than 3% of the OH concentration during the same periods. During the episodes, the fraction of oxidation
chemistry initiated by Cl ranged from 3–43% and was strongly dependent on the quantity and type of hydrocarbons present in
the atmosphere. Because of its intermittent presence and low concentration, Cl is not a broadly influential oxidant in the

This study of fossils (pollen, plant macrofossils, stomata and fish) and sediments (lithostratigraphy and geochemistry) from
the Wendel site in North Dakota, USA, emphasizes the importance of considering ground-water hydrology when deciphering paleoclimate
signals from lakes in postglacial landscapes. The Wendel site was a paleolake from about 11,500 14C yr BP to 11,100 14C yr BP. Afterwards, the lake-level lowered until it became a prairie marsh by 9,300 14C yr BP and finally, at 8,500 14C yr BP, an ephemeral wetland as it is today. Meanwhile, the vegetation changed from a white spruce parkland (11,500 to 10,500
14C yr BP) to deciduous parkland, followed by grassland at 9,300 14C yr BP. The pattern and timing of these aquatic and terrestrial changes are similar to coeval kettle lake records from adjacent
uplands, providing a regional aridity signal. However, two local sources of ground water were identified from the fossil and
geochemical data, which mediated atmospheric inputs to the Wendel basin. First, the paleolake received water from the melting
of stagnant ice buried under local till for about 900 years after glacier recession. Later, Holocene droughts probably caused
the lower-elevation Wendel site to capture the ground water of up-gradient lakes. 相似文献

The objective of this study is to find the order and coefficients of non-low-phase causal filters for ARMA (auto regressive moving average) filter model, using the Kurtosis minimization criterion. This method is based on the Kurtosis calculation of the treated sample at the input level and its identification at the output of the ARMA model. For this purpose, the order and coefficients of the AR (auto regressive) part are identified using the Yule-Walker algorithm at order two and then extended to order four. To obtain the MA (moving average) part, the AR components are calculated at first from the ARMA filter by deconvolution. Then, spectrally equivalent and minimum phase (SEMP) MA filter is identified using the Durbin algorithm at second and fourth order. Finally, the correct filter is found when the Kurtosis value of the output ARMA filter reconstituted is the closest to the Kurtosis of introduced signal. The proposed method is then tested on simulated processes and applied to real seismic data to perform blind deconvolution and obtain the reflectivity coefficients of subsoil studied. 相似文献

Wet granular materials are three-dimensionally simulated by the discrete element method with water bridges incorporated between particles. The water bridges are simplified as toroidal shapes, and the matric suction is constantly maintained in the material. A comparison with experimental tests in the literature indicates that the toroidal shape approximation may be one of the best choices with high practicability and decent accuracy. Mechanical behaviours of wet granular materials are studied by triaxial tests. Effects of particle size distributions and void ratios are investigated systematically in this study. The hydraulic limit of the pendular state is also discussed. It gives the capillary cohesion function which is not only determined by the degree of saturation but also positively correlated to relative density and particle size polydispersity and inversely proportional to mean particle size. Furthermore, the capillary strengthening effect is also analysed microscopically in aid of the Stress–Force–Fabric relationship, mainly in fabric anisotropy, coordination number and stress transmission pattern, which revealed the micro-mechanisms of the additional effective stress induced by capillary effect. 相似文献

Following our previous study (Sugimoto and Hanawa, 2005b), we further investigate the reason why reemergence of winter sea
surface temperature anomalies does not occur in the North Pacific eastern subtropical mode water (NPESTMW) area, despite its
occurrence in the North Pacific subtropical mode water and North Pacific central mode water areas. We use vertical temperature
and salinity profiles of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment Hydrographic Program and Argo floats with high vertical and
temporal resolution, together with heat flux data through the sea surface. We point out first that one of the causes for non-occurrence
of reemergence is that the thickness of NPESTMW is very thin. In addition to this basic cause, two major reasons are found:
a vigorous mixing in the lower portion of NPESTMW and less heat input from the atmosphere in the warming season. Since, in
the lower portion of NPESTMW and deeper, the stratification is favorable for salt-finger type convection to occur compared
with the other mode water areas, vigorous mixing takes place. This is confirmed by both a large Turner Angle there and the
existence of staircase structures in vertical temperature and salinity profiles. From the viewpoint of heat input, the NPESTMW
area gradually gains heat in the warming season compared with other mode water areas. As a result, NPESTMW cannot be capped
so quickly by the shallow summer mixed layer, and water properties of NPESTMW are to be gradually modified, even in the upper

Hydrographic data and composite current velocity data (ADCP and GEK) were used to examine the seasonal variations of upper-ocean
flow in the southern sea area of Hokkaido, which includes the “off-Doto” and “Hidaka Bay” areas separated by Cape Erimo. During
the heating season (April–September), the outflow of the Tsugaru Warm Current (TWC) from the Tsugaru Strait first extends
north-eastward, and then one branch of TWC turns to the west along the shelf slope after it approaches the Hidaka Shelf. The
main flow of TWC evolves continuously, extending eastward as far as the area off Cape Erimo. In the late cooling season (January–March),
part of the Oyashio enters Hidaka Bay along the shallower part of the shelf slope through the area off Cape Erimo, replacing
almost all of the TWC water, and hence the TWC devolves. It is suggested that the bottom-controlled barotropic flow of the
Oyashio, which may be caused by the small density difference between the Oyashio and the TWC waters and the southward migration
of main front of TWC, permits the Oyashio water to intrude along the Hidaka shelf slope. 相似文献
