The mechanism of the Q-burst is investigated in the time and frequency domains. Electric fields in the ELF (extremely low frequency) to VLF (very low frequency) range have been observed with a ball antenna since 2003 in Kochi City, Japan (latitude 33.3°north, longitude 133.4°east). Source-to-observer distances (SODs) of Q-bursts are estimated by analyzing the waveforms. It is found as a result that the Q-burst is produced by combination of direct and antipodal pulses from a source lightning stroke occurring all over the world. 相似文献

Particle-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in outflow from East Asia were observed at Cape Hedo, Okinawa, Japan between 2005 and 2008. The filter samples of the total suspended particles were analyzed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentration of fourteen 3–7-ring PAHs was 0.01–24 ng m?3 (average 1.6 ng m?3). The average PAH concentration increased in the winter-spring season and decreased in the summer-fall season. The average benzo(a)pyrene to benzo(e)pyrene ratio was 0.49 in the winter-spring season and was lower than the literature values for East Asian cities in the same season. This result shows that aging of organic aerosol particles proceeds during long-range transport from East Asia. In the Asian Pacific region, these pollutants are transported from East Asia in the winter-spring season, whereas clean air mass is transported from the Pacific Ocean in the summer-fall season. 相似文献

This study examined possible environmental factors that affect prokaryote variables in surface waters (upper 100 m of water
column) in the Canada Basin, western Arctic Ocean. We collected data on prokaryote abundance and heterotrophic production
([3H]leucine incorporation) at eight stations deployed along a slope-to-offshore transect during September 2009. Prokaryote production
and growth tended to increase with increasing chlorophyll a (Chl. a) and temperature and with decreasing salinity. The combination of Chl. a, temperature, and salinity accounted for a large fraction (74%) of the variability in prokaryote production, with the highest
contribution made by Chl. a (r
2 = 0.56), followed by salinity (r
2 = 0.14) and temperature (r
2 = 0.03). Similarly, the variability in prokaryote growth rate was largely accounted for by the combination of the three environmental
variables (overall r
2 of 0.64), with Chl. a making the largest contribution to variability (r
2 = 0.33), followed by salinity (r
2 = 0.27) and temperature (r
2 = 0.05). These data are consistent with the notion that organic matter supply associated with freshwater inputs to surface
layers can result in enhanced prokaryote production and growth in the Canada Basin. Our results provide insights into the

Monitoring using a thermistor array and an acoustic Doppler current profiler was carried out in the outer part of Tokyo Bay
from May 20 to November 30, 2006. Current fluctuations with tidal periods were amplified during the maximum temperature period
in early September. The strong current interfered with fishing operations using set nets. Although the current fluctuation
was speculated to be baroclinic motion from a phase relationship among fluctuations of temperature, current and sea level,
empirical orthogonal function analysis showed the dominance of a barotropic structure. Such a discrepancy in the current structure
was explained by an internal tide propagating along a deep canyon in the outer part of Tokyo Bay. Furthermore, amplification
of the semidiurnal internal tide and the warming of the temperature field were found to be induced by the intrusion of Kuroshio
warm water. The amplification mechanism was examined using a two-dimensional model with idealized topography. It was concluded
that the large amplitude of the semidiurnal internal tide is resonantly generated in the deep canyon in the outer Tokyo Bay

Effects of the Chemical Compositions of Salars de Uyuni and Atacama Brines on Lithium Concentration during Evaporation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
During Li recovery from salar brines, Li concentration is typically increased to about 60,000 mg L?1 by evaporation. We investigated the concentration changes of Li, Na, K, Mg, Cl, SO4, and B during evaporation of both natural Uyuni and artificial Atacama brines. The Uyuni brine exhibited a maximum Li concentration of 6810 mg L?1 at 31 days of evaporation, at which point the majority of the Na and K in the brine was removed. The Li concentration decreased with further evaporation due to precipitation as Li2SO4, such that the level at the 56 day mark was approximately 4130 mg L?1. In contrast, the artificial Atacama brine showed no pronounced Li precipitation, even after 54 days, at which point the Li concentration was 21,800 mg L?1. The initial concentrations of Na and K in the Atacama brine were higher than those in the Uyuni brine, and the Atacama solution still retained K after 54 days of evaporation. The order of precipitation of cation species during the evaporation of both brines was: Na, followed by K, Mg, and Li. Thus, Li precipitation in the Atacama brine might be prevented due to the more favored precipitations of Na and K, such that significant Li removal did not occur in this brine. 相似文献

Numerical models are systematically presented for time-dependent thermal convection of Newtonian fluid with strongly temperature-dependent viscosity in a two-dimensional rectangular box of aspect ratio 3 at various values of the Rayleigh number Rab defined with viscosity at the bottom boundary up to 1.6×108 and the viscosity contrast across the box rη up to 108. We found that there are two different series of bifurcations that take place as rη increases. One series of bifurcations causes changes in the behavior of the thermal boundary layer along the surface boundary from small-viscosity-contrast (SVC) mode, through transitional (TR) mode, to stagnant-lid (ST) mode, or from SVC mode directly to ST mode, depending on Rab. Another series of bifurcations causes changes in the aspect ratio of convection cells; convection with an elongated cell can take place at moderate rη (103–105.5 at Rab=6×106), while only convection of aspect ratio close to 1 takes place at small rη and large rη. The parameter range of rη and Rab for elongated-cell convection overlaps the parameter range for SVC and ST modes and include the entire parameter range for TR mode. In the elongated-ST regime, the lid of highly viscous fluid along the top boundary is not literally ‘stagnant’ but can horizontally move at a velocity high enough to induce a convection cell with aspect ratio much larger than 1. 相似文献

A Note has been published for this article in Hydrological Processes 18(4) 2004, 825. Both water and heat balances were studied in a conifer plantation watershed in south‐west Japan, within the warm‐temperate East Asia monsoon area. Forest cover in the watershed consists mainly of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantations. Precipitation and runoff have been observed since 1991, so evapotranspiration can be compared with the water balance. Two meteorological observation towers were built to monitor evapotranspiration in the watershed. The annual average precipitation, amount of runoff and losses were 2166, 1243 and 923 mm, respectively. The evapotranspiration (latent heat flux) agreed well with the water balance losses. The average annual evapotranspiration at the tower built in the centre of the watershed was 902 mm; evapotranspiration at the other tower, further upslope, was 875 mm. The observed evapotranspiration was 39% to 40% of the average precipitation (2166 mm). The mean net radiation was c. 2·6 GJ m?2 year?1, and is considered a representative value of the net radiation (Rn) in coniferous plantations in this region. This region is classified in the humid zone based on the ratio of net radiation (Rn) to the energy required to evaporate the rainfall (λR). Remote sensing was used to understand the seasonal and spatial variation of suspended sediment in the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers in Bangladesh for two different discharge periods. Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in these rivers was estimated from the reflectance of Landsat TM band 3. During the high discharge period, SSC in the Ganges is higher than that in the Brahmaputra. But in the low discharge period, this is reversed. Both erosional and depositional processes are active on their flood plains. Significant fluctuations in SSC and in suspended sediment load were observed along their courses because of river bank erosion and deposition and/or scouring and aggradation of river beds. Owing to scouring and turbulence, SSC increases markedly at the confluence of these rivers. Reflectance of AVHRR band 1 data was also analysed to study the distribution of suspended sediment along other reaches of these rivers. Like SSC, reflectance at the confluence zone increases compared with that in the Brahmaputra. However, this increase is not marked compared with the Ganges. The influence of their tributaries on the suspended sediment load could be inferred from the pattern of reflectance. Remote sensing data used in this study was corrected for atmospheric effects. The northern Nagano Prefecture earthquake, MJMA?6.7 (Mw?6.2), which is inferred to have been triggered by the huge (Mw?9.0) March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake, occurred on March 12, 2011, in northern Nagano Prefecture, an area in Japan famous for heavy snowfall. A large number of landslides were triggered by the 12 March earthquake, and it caused building damage in the area of the epicenter. To clarify characteristics of the distribution and dynamic behavior of these landslides, we analyzed aerial photographs and conducted field surveys in and around the epicentral area. Large-scale landslides with long distance run-outs are a remarkable characteristic of the landslides induced by this earthquake. The long travel distance is considered to be related to the thick snowpack at the time the earthquake occurred. Moderate scale deep-seated landslides and shallow landslides were also observed in the study area. Based on an analysis of landslides with the active fault on which the earthquake is believed to have occurred, most of these landslides were distributed on the hanging wall of the active fault, within a distance of 12?km from the fault. 相似文献
