Isotope signatures in precipitation from the Global Network for Isotopes in Precipitation around the Mediterranean basin and literature data are compared with isotopic data from a large karstic aquifer in southeast Spain to explain the origin and type of the precipitation events dominating recharge. Analysis of the deuterium excess d at the scale of the Mediterranean basin and at the regional scale allows us to understand the isotopic context of the study area: Campo de Dalias and the Sierra de Gador (Almería province). The origin of precipitation can be determined from its d value. The d value changes as a function of the initial evaporation condition. It depends on the relative humidity and temperature during the evaporation producing the water vapour of the clouds. The water vapour, which dominates the study area, is generated in two areas: the Atlantic Ocean (d = 10‰) and the western Mediterranean basin (d = 15‰). With increasing precipitation volume, the western Mediterranean character dominates. These heavier storms contribute mainly to recharge, as illustrated by the d value of 13·6‰ in deep groundwater of the Campo de Dalias. Weighted d values increase with the volume of precipitation, giving a significant relationship for the southern and eastern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. This selectivity of d to monthly precipitation was used to estimate the return period of precipitation leading to aquifer recharge at 0·9–4·9 years. Moderate rainfall, which occurs more frequently, still represents ~60–90% of the total precipitation. One of the challenges to meet ever‐growing water demands is to increase recharge from moderate events yielding intermediate quantities per event, but forming the bulk of the annual precipitation. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and the evolution of the fracture process zone during fracture and damage in quasi‐brittle materials. A model taking into account the material details at the mesoscale is used to describe the failure process at the scale of the heterogeneities. This model is used to compute histograms of the relative distances between damaged points. These numerical results are compared with experimental data, where the damage evolution is monitored using acoustic emissions. Histograms of the relative distances between damage events in the numerical calculations and acoustic events in the experiments exhibit good agreement. It is shown that the mesoscale model provides relevant information from the point of view of both global responses and the local failure process. © 2015 The Authors. The cosmological event horizon entropy and the apparent horizon entropy of the ΛCDM and the Bianchi type I Universe model with viscosity has been calculated numerically, and analytically in the large time limit. It is shown that for these Universe models the cosmological event horizon entropy increases with time and for large times it approaches a finite maximum value. The effect of viscosity upon the entropy is also studied and we have found that its role is to decrease the entropy. The bigger the viscosity coefficient is the less the entropy will be. Furthermore, the radiation entropy for the ΛCDM Universe model with and without viscosity is investigated, and together with the cosmological event horizon entropy are used to examine the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics, which states that the total rate of change of entropy of the Universe is never negative, in this Universe model. 相似文献

To understand the process of cosmic dust particle impacts and translate crater morphology on smoothed metallic surfaces to dust properties, correct calibration of the experimental impact data is needed. This article presents the results of studies of crater morphology generated by impacts using micron‐sized polypyrrole (PPy)‐coated olivine particles. The particles were accelerated by an electrostatic dust accelerator to high speeds before they impacted onto polished aluminum targets. The projectile diameter and velocity ranges were 0.3–1.2 μm and 3–7 km s?1. After impact, stereopair images of the craters were taken using scanning electron microscope and 3‐D reconstructions made to provide diameter and depth measurements. In this study, not just the dimensions of crater diameters and depths, but also the shape and dimensions of crater lips were analyzed. The craters created by the coated olivine projectiles are shown to have complicated shapes believed to be due to the nonspherical shape of the projectiles. 相似文献

We present a geomorphologic analysis of an east‐west transect located east of the southern Andes of Argentina (~37°S). We observe a succession of zones that underwent erosion and deposition during the Pleistocene. If the proximal Andean foothills are incised, a proximal depozone receives sediments feeding the megafan of the Rio Colorado on the Chadileuvú plain. More distally, the abandoned palaeo‐valleys and bending of the valley floors reflect a localized uplift. Further to the east, another depozone corresponds to the Pampa Deprimida lowland. This pattern is consistent with the presence of a classical flexural geometry of the lithosphere. The distal uplift of the foreland corresponds in terms of location, length (150 km) and amplitude (240 m) to the Andean forebulge modelled by a geophysical approach. In this study, we identify the morphological imprint of this bulge and show its effect on the fluvial activity. 相似文献

Daily stream temperatures are needed in a number of analyses. Such analyses might focus on aquatic organisms or industrial activities. To protect aquatic systems, industrial activities, for example, water withdrawals or discharges, are sometimes restricted. To evaluate where new industrial settings should be placed or if climate change will affect already existing industrial settings, the simulation of stream temperature is needed. Stream temperature models with weekly or monthly time scale might not be sufficient for this kind of analysis. Different regression models to simulate daily stream temperature for the river Elbe (Germany) are developed and their performance is estimated. For the calibration period the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient (NSC) for the simplest model is 0·97, and the root mean squared error (RMSE) is 1·48 °C. For the most sophisticated model the NSC also is 0·97. However, the RMSE is 1·32 °C. For the validation period the NSC for the simplest model is 0·96, and the RMSE is 1·45 °C. Taking into account meteoroid measurements by in situ experiments, zodiacal light observations, and oblique angle hypervelocity impact studies, it is found that the observed size distributions of lunar microcraters usually do not represent the interplanetary meteoroid flux for particles with masses ?10?10g. From the steepest observed lunar crater size distribution a “lunar flux” is derived which is up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than the interplanetary flux at the smallest particle masses. New models of the “lunar” and “interplanetary” meteoroid fluxes are presented. The spatial mass density of interplanetary meteoritic material at 1 AU is ~10?16g/m3. A large fraction of this mass is in particles of 10?6 to 10?4 g. A detailed analysis of the effects of mutual collisions (i.e., destruction of meteoroids and production of fragment particles) and of radiation pressure has been performed which yielded a new picture of the balance of the meteoritic complex. It has been found that the collisional lifetime at 1 AU is shortest (~104years) for meteoroids of 10?4 to 1 g mass. For particles with masses m > 10?5g, Poynting-Robertson lifetimes are considerably larger than collisional lifetimes. The collisional destruction rate of meteoroids with masses is about 10 times larger than the rate of collisional production of fragment particles in the same mass range. About 9 tons/sec of these “meteor-sized” (m > 10?5g) particles are lost inside 1 AU due to collisions and have to be replenished by other sources, e.g., comets. Under steady-state conditions, most of these large particles are “young”; i.e., they have not been fragmented by collisions and their initial orbits are not altered much by radiation pressure drag. Many more micrometeoroids of masses m ? 10?5g are generated by collisions from more massive particles than are destroyed by collisions. The net collisional production rate of intermediate-sized particles 10?10g ? m ? 10?5g is found to be about 16 times larger at 1 AU than the Poynting-Robertson loss rate. The total Poynting-Robertson loss rate inside 1 AU is only about 0.26 tons/sec. The smallest fragment particles (m ? 10?10g) will be largely injected into hyperbolic trajectories under the influence of radiation pressure (β meteoroids). These particles provide the most effecient loss mechanism from the meteoritic complex. When it is assumed that meteoroids fragment similarly to experimental impact studies with basalt, then it is found that interplanetary meteoroids in the mass range 10?10g ? m ? 10?5g cannot be in temporal balance under collisions and Poynting-Robertson drag but their spatial density is presently increasing with time. 相似文献

U-Pb isotopic analyses have been determined on four size splits from an orthogneiss zircon population and on seven size and magnetic splits from a paragneiss zircon population from the Ceneri Zone, Southern Switzerland. The orthogneiss zircon results suggest that a severe isotopic disturbance occurred in this region between 400–450 m. y. ago which, besides initiating new zircon growth, almost completely reconstituted older zircon. The U-Pb systems of the orthogneiss zircons are nearly concordant, except the coarsest size split where some older lead is present.The paragneiss zircon U-Pb systems have Precambrian apparent ages and appear to be an old detrital zircon suite which has been severely isotopically disturbed by the same Caledonian event which affected the orthogneiss zircons. Zircon U-Pb data-points of paragneiss size-and-magnetic fractions are linearly correlated on a concordia plot. The age significance of this is not fully understood, however these results indicate that Precambrian crustal rocks, at least 1,500 m. y. old, contributed detritus to the original sediments of the Alpine gneisses.The gneissic rocks in Southern Switzerland have been postulated as a possible source or root zone for petrologically and chemically similar gneisses in the Silvretta Nappe to the north. The close similarity of zircon U-Pb systems of orth- and para-gneisses between the two regions supports this hypothesis. 相似文献

Numerous ultramafic xenoliths occur within the A??n–Temouchent volcanic complex (Northwestern Oranie, Algeria). Most of them are type I mantle tectonites (lherzolites and harzburgites) and composite xenoliths (harzburgite/clinopyroxenite) are rare. Only a few samples of spinel lherzolites display relatively fertile compositions when the major part of type I xenoliths have refractory major element compositions but enriched LREE contents showing that they have been affected by mantle metasomatism. The composite xenoliths are witnesses of reactions of alkaline magmas with the upper mantle. An asthenospheric rising, in relation with the large strike slip fault affecting the North African plate margin at Trias time is proposed as a possible geodynamical setting. To cite this article: M.
