The climate of the South China Sea (SCS) is dominated by the East Asian monsoon (EAM) and can be related to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) owing to the interaction between ENSO and the EAM. An annually-banded coral (Porites sp.) collected from Con Dao Island in the southern SCS was measured for Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios at near-monthly resolution through the annual bands of AD 1948–1999. This island is only ~ 90 km from the Mekong Delta coast and thus significantly influenced by riverine discharge, suggesting relatively severe environmental stress on corals. The Sr/Ca time series shows a clear annual cyclicity chiefly modulated by sea-surface temperature (SST), whereas the Mg/Ca time series exhibits an indistinct annual cyclicity, indicating that the previously-proposed coral Mg/Ca thermometry is greatly disturbed. An instrumental SST record in Con Dao Island (since 1980) has been compared with the Sr/Ca time series to calibrate a Sr/Ca thermometer. The Sr/Ca vs. SST comparison shows that the Sr/Ca thermometer is sometimes disturbed by some factor and that almost all of the disturbances occur around the annual-maximum SST in the warm/wet season. The Sr/Ca data around the annual-minimum SST in the cool/dry season is almost free from the disturbance and thus useful as a SST proxy. The disturbances of the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca thermometers may be ascribed to the Mekong River discharge and its accompanying phenomena (i.e., large freshwater input, suspended-sediment loads, intense phytoplankton blooms, etc.), which are likely to disturb coral physiological processes. Applying the Sr/Ca thermometer to the whole Sr/Ca time series provides a SST reconstruction from 1948 through 1999. Reconstructed annual-minimum SSTs show a clear quasi-biennial oscillation significantly correlated with ENSO, indicating that the annual-minimum SST in the southern SCS tends to be higher (lower) in El Niño (La Niña) phases. This is compatible with previous observations that the East Asian winter monsoon is weakened (strengthened) in El Niño (La Niña) phases. The reconstructed SST record suggests a warming of 1.0 °C for the latter half of the 20th century. The Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca time series exhibit similar decadal-to-bidecadal variations, which do not seem to be primarily due to SST variability but rather due to some other factor possibly related to disturbance or fluctuation of coral physiological processes. Although both of our Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca data are affected, to a greater or lesser extent, by some non-temperature factor, a part of the Sr/Ca data provides a useful SST proxy and suggests that coral-based SST reconstruction in the southern SCS may be an effective means for monitoring the EAM and ENSO. 相似文献
CONT08 was a 15 days campaign of continuous Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) sessions during the second half of August 2008 carried out by the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS). In this study, VLBI estimates of troposphere zenith total delays (ZTD) and gradients during CONT08 were compared with those derived from observations with the Global Positioning System (GPS), Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS), and water vapor radiometers (WVR) co-located with the VLBI radio telescopes. Similar geophysical models were used for the analysis of the space geodetic data, whereas the parameterization for the least-squares adjustment of the space geodetic techniques was optimized for each technique. In addition to space geodetic techniques and WVR, ZTD and gradients from numerical weather models (NWM) were used from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) (all sites), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) (Tsukuba), and the High Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM) (European sites). Biases, standard deviations, and correlation coefficients were computed between the troposphere estimates of the various techniques for all eleven CONT08 co-located sites. ZTD from space geodetic techniques generally agree at the sub-centimetre level during CONT08, and??as expected??the best agreement is found for intra-technique comparisons: between the Vienna VLBI Software and the combined IVS solutions as well as between the Center for Orbit Determination (CODE) solution and an IGS PPP time series; both intra-technique comparisons are with standard deviations of about 3?C6?mm. The best inter space geodetic technique agreement of ZTD during CONT08 is found between the combined IVS and the IGS solutions with a mean standard deviation of about 6?mm over all sites, whereas the agreement with numerical weather models is between 6 and 20?mm. The standard deviations are generally larger at low latitude sites because of higher humidity, and the latter is also the reason why the standard deviations are larger at northern hemisphere stations during CONT08 in comparison to CONT02 which was observed in October 2002. The assessment of the troposphere gradients from the different techniques is not as clear because of different time intervals, different estimation properties, or different observables. However, the best inter-technique agreement is found between the IVS combined gradients and the GPS solutions with standard deviations between 0.2 and 0.7?mm. 相似文献
Hydrothermal volatile-solubility and partitioning experiments were conducted with fluid-saturated haplogranitic melt, H2O, CO2, and S in an internally heated pressure vessel at 900°C and 200?MPa; three additional experiments were conducted with iron-bearing melt. The run-product glasses were analyzed by electron microprobe, FTIR, and SIMS; and they contain ??0.12 wt% S, ??0.097 wt% CO2, and ??6.4 wt% H2O. Apparent values of log fO2 for the experiments at run conditions were computed from the [(S6+)/(S6++S2?)] ratio of the glasses, and they range from NNO ?0.4 to NNO?+?1.4. The C?CO?CH?CS fluid compositions at run conditions were computed by mass balance, and they contained 22?C99?mol% H2O, 0?C78?mol% CO2, 0?C12?mol% S, and <3 wt% alkalis. Eight S-free experiments were conducted to determine the H2O and CO2 concentrations of melt and fluid compositions and to compare them with prior experimental results for C?CO?CH fluid-saturated rhyolite melt, and the agreement is excellent. Sulfur partitions very strongly in favor of fluid in all experiments, and the presence of S modifies the fluid compositions, and hence, the CO2 solubilities in coexisting felsic melt. The square of the mole fraction of H2O in melt increases in a linear fashion, from 0.05 to 0.25, with the H2O concentration of the fluid. The mole fraction of CO2 in melt increases linearly, from 0.0003 to 0.0045, with the CO2 concentration of C?CO?CH?CS fluids. Interestingly, the CO2 concentration in melts, involving relatively reduced runs (log fO2????NNO?+?0.3) that contain 2.5?C7?mol% S in the fluid, decreases significantly with increasing S in the system. This response to the changing fluid composition causes the H2O and CO2 solubility curve for C?CO?CH?CS fluid-saturated haplogranitic melts at 200?MPa to shift to values near that modeled for C?CO?CH fluid-saturated, S-free rhyolite melt at 150?MPa. The concentration of S in haplogranitic melt increases in a linear fashion with increasing S in C?CO?CH?CS fluids, but these data show significant dispersion that likely reflects the strong influence of fO2 on S speciation in melt and fluid. Importantly, the partitioning of S between fluid and melt does not vary with the (H2O/H2O?+?CO2) ratio of the fluid. The fluid-melt partition coefficients for H2O, CO2, and S and the atomic (C/S) ratios of the run-product fluids are virtually identical to thermodynamic constraints on volatile partitioning and the H, S, and C contents of pre-eruptive magmatic fluids and volcanic gases for subduction-related magmatic systems thus confirming our experiments are relevant to natural eruptive systems. 相似文献
This study investigated temporal variations in the vertical structure and water properties of a warm-core ring that migrated
into the western subarctic gyre of the North Pacific, based on analyses of temperature and salinity data derived from two
profiling floats, together with shipboard and satellite observation data. The floats were initially deployed into cold and
fresh Oyashio water in September 2003, and were entrained into a warm-core ring in October 2003, remaining within the ring
until detrainment in December 2004. Drastic cooling and freshening of the upper core water of the ring were observed during
the above entrainment of the floats with cold and fresh water into the ring, whereas moderate variations in structure and
water properties were observed during a quasi-isolated phase from November 2003 to November 2004 when the ring did not experience
major interactions with ambient hydrographic features. The upper part of the core water (upper core), with relatively warm/saline
water above 26.6 σθ, was under the influence of the atmosphere in winter via the formation of a deep mixed layer exceeding 300 dB, and had a
prominent pycnostad below the seasonal pycnocline from spring to autumn. In contrast, the lower core, with relatively cold
and fresh water below 26.6 σθ, was not ventilated throughout the observation period. Isopycnal surfaces showed a shoaling trend of about 50 dB/year during
the quasi-isolated phase, suggesting viscous decay over a timescale of several years. Markedly cold and thick water was also
frequently observed within the ring, indicating the intrusion of water from the Sea of Okhotsk. 相似文献
The steady velocity, perturbation pressure and perturbation magnetic field, driven by an isolated buoyant parcel of Gaussian shape in a rapidly rotating, unconfined, incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the presence of an imposed uniform magnetic field, are obtained by means of the Fourier transform in the limit of small Ekman number. Lorentz and inertial forces are neglected. The solution requires at most evaluation of a single integral and is found in closed form in some spatial regions. The solution has structure on two disparate scales: on the scale of the buoyant parcel and on the scale of the Taylor column, which is elongated in the direction of the rotation axis. The detailed structures of the flow and pressure depend linearly on the relative orientation of gravity and rotation, with the solution for arbitrary orientation being a linear combination of two limiting cases in which these vectors are colinear (polar case) and perpendicular (equatorial case). The perturbation magnetic field depends additionally on the relative orientation of the imposed magnetic field, and three limiting cases of interest are presented in which gravity and rotation are colinear (polar–toroidal case), gravity and imposed field are colinear (equatorial–radial case) and all three are mutually perpendicular (equatorial–toroidal case). Visualization and analysis of the velocity and perturbation magnetic field vectors are facilitated by dividing these vector fields into geostrophic and ageostrophic protions. In all cases, the geostrophic and ageostrophic portions have different structure on the Taylor-column scale. The buoyancy force is balanced by a pressure force in the polar case and by a flux of momentum in the equatorial case. The pressure force and momentum flux do not decay in strength with increasing axial distance. Far from the parcel, the axial mass flux varies as the inverse one-third power of distance from the parcel. The velocity has a single geostrophic vortex in the polar case and two vortices in the equatorial case. The perturbation magnetic field has two, four and one geostrophic vortices in the polar–toroidal, equatorial–radial and equatorial–toroidal cases, respectively. To facilitate comparison of the present results with numerical simulations carried out in a finite domain, a set of boundary conditions are developed, with may be applied at a finite distance from the parcel. 相似文献
Tokyo Bay is one of the estuaries in Japan with a high population of almost 26 million people in the basin area. One of the major concerns for the environment in this water area is the decreasing ecosystem functions including the deterioration of water and sediment qualities caused by various anthropogenic activities. Since the bottom sediments around almost the entire area of the inner bay consist of fine materials with a high organic content, which cause the deterioration of water quality through processes such as hypoxia, an understanding of the fine sediment dynamics in the Bay is crucial for an environmental assessment of the water area. This paper proposes a model for the key processes of fine sediment dynamics, which reflects field data about muddy bed structures and their dynamics obtained during the monitoring campaign in 2007. One of the specific features of the sediment in the Bay at present is the persistent existence of fluid mud layers (water content over 300 %) with a thickness of around a few decimeters, which might be caused by deposition of abundant organic particles due to eutrophication. The present study shows that diffusion flux model delivers quite reliable results for estimating erosion flux from the top of fluid mud layers after calibrating the model parameter against the time series data of vertical flux measured by an acoustic Doppler velocimeter system. This study also derives analytical solutions, based on the Bingham fluid concept, of advection flux in the fluid mud layer on which external shear stress force is applied.
The distributions of various kinds of molecular ions in the atmospheres of new and old comets made up from dirty ice of the second kind (H2O ice and hydrate clathrates of CO and N2) have been computed at various heliocentric distances, by taking into account photoionization, ionmolecular reactions, electron-ion recombinations, and some transport effects. The results have been compared with observations and other computations. It is argued that dirty ice of the second kind model will impose a restriction on the theory of the origin of the solar system. 相似文献
