The Middle Miocene Tobe hornfels in the Sanbagawa metamorphic belt, western Shikoku, southwest Japan, is characterized by
an abnormally steep metamorphic gradient compared with other hornfelses associated with intrusive bodies. The basic hornfels,
originally Sanbagawa greenschist rocks, is divided into the following three metamorphic zones: plagioclase, hornblende, and
orthopyroxene. The plagioclase zone is defined by the appearance of calcic plagioclase, the hornblende zone by the assemblage
of hornblende+calcic plagioclase+quartz, and the orthopyroxene zone is characterized by the assemblage of orthopyroxene +
clinopyroxene + plagioclase + quartz. Calcic amphibole compositions change from actinolite to hornblende as a result of the
continuous reactions during prograde metamorphism. Petrographical and thermometric studies indicate a metamorphic temperature
range of 300–475°C for the plagioclase zone, 475–680°C for the hornblende zone, and 680–730°C for the orthopyroxene zone.
The temperature gradient based on petrological studies is approximately 5°C/m, which is unusually high. Geological and petrological
studies demonstrate that the hornfelses were formed by the focusing of high-temperature fluids through zones of relatively
high fracture permeability. The steep thermal gradient in the Tobe hornfels body is consistent with a large fluid flux, greater
than 8.3 × 10–7 m3 m–2S–1, over the relatively short duration of metamorphism, approximately 100 years.

Application of an optimum design technique for determining the coefficient of consolidation by using piezocone test data 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
For normally consolidated clay, several researchers have developed a number of theoretical time factors to determine the coefficient of consolidation from piezocone test results. However, depending on assumptions and analytical techniques, it could vary considerably, even for a specific degree of consolidation. In this paper a method is proposed to determine a consistent coefficient of consolidation by applying the concept of an optimum design technique over all ranges of the degree of consolidation. Initial excess pore pressure distribution is assumed to be capable of being obtained by the successive spherical cavity expansion theory. The dissipation of pore pressure is simulated by means of a two-dimensional linear-uncoupled axi-symmetric consolidation analysis. The minimization of differences between measured and predicted excess pore pressure was carried out by the BFGS unconstrained optimum design algorithm with a one-dimensional golden section search technique. By analyzing numerical examples and in-situ test results, it was found that the adopted optimum design technique gives consistent and convergent results. 相似文献

Strontium and Nd isotopic compositions and trace element abundances were determined for Cretaceous to late Cenozoic igneous
rocks from the Japan Sea side of Southwest Japan in order to investigate the effect of the opening of the Japan Sea on igneous
activity. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios for both high and low silica rocks decrease with decreasing age since the middle Miocene, when the opening occurred.
Similarly, 143Nd/144Nd values for these rocks increase with decreasing age, and are negatively correlated with 87Sr/86Sr ratios. A two-component mixing process can best account for these isotopic and chemical characteristics. One end-member
is likely the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and its derivative mafic to intermediate materials which had ɛNd values of around +3. The other endmember consists of mafic to intermediate rocks with low ɛNd values (e.g., −8), probably located in the lower crust. The mantle upwelling associated with the opening of the Japan Sea
did not supply typical MORB or MORB-source materials to the crust, but did provide the heat that caused the melting of lithospheric
mantle and lower crust.

H2O activities in supercritical fluids in the system KCl-H2O-(MgO) were measured at pressures of 1, 2, 4, 7, 10 and 15 kbar by numerous reversals of vapor compositions in equilibrium
with brucite and periclase. Measurements spanned the range 550–900 °C. A change of state of solute KCl occurs as pressures
increase above 2 kbar, by which H2O activity becomes very low and, at pressures of 4 kbar and above, nearly coincident with the square of the mole fraction
(x
H2O). The effect undoubtedly results primarily from ionic dissociation as H2O density (ρH2O) approaches 1 gm/cm3, and is more pronounced than in the NaCl-H2O system at the same P-T-X conditions. Six values of solute KCl activity were yielded by terminal points of the isobaric brucite-periclase T-x
H2O curves where sylvite saturation occurs. The H2O mole fraction of the isobaric invariant assemblage brucite-periclase-sylvite-fluid is near 0.52 at all pressures, and the
corresponding temperatures span only 100 °C between 1 and 15 kbar. This remarkable convergence of the isobaric equilibrium
curves reflects the great influence of pressure on lowering of both KCl and H2O activities. The H2O and KCl activities can be expressed by the formulas: a

KCl)](1 + α), where α is a degree of dissociation parameter which increases from zero at the lowest pressures to near one at high pressures
and the γ's are activity coefficients based on an empirical regular solution parameter W: ln γi = (1 − xi)2W. Least squares fitting of our H2O and KCl activity data evaluates the parameters: α = exp(4.166 −2.709/ρH2O) − 212.1P/T, and W = (−589.6 − 23.10P) /T, with ρH2O in gm/cm3, P in kbar and T in K. The standard deviation from the measured activities is only ± 0.014. The equations define isobaric liquidus curves,
which are in perfect agreement with previous DTA liquidus measurements at 0.5–2 kbar, but which depart progressively from
their extrapolation to higher pressures because of the pressure-induced dissociation effect. The great similarity of the NaCl-H2O and KCl-H2O systems suggests that H2O activities in the ternary NaCl-KCl-H2O system can be described with reasonable accuracy by assuming proportionality between the binary systems. This assumption
was verified by a few reconnaissance measurements at 10 kbar of the brucite-periclase equilibrium with a Na/(Na + K) ratio
of 0.5 and of the saturation temperature for Na/(Na + K) of 0.35 and 0.50. At that pressure the brucite-periclase curves reach
a lowest x
H2O of 0.45 and a temperature of 587 °C before salt saturation occurs, values considerably lower than in either binary. This
double-salt eutectic effect may have a significant application to natural polyionic hypersaline solutions in the deep crust
and upper mantle in that higher solute concentrations and very low H2O activities may be realized in complex solutions before salt saturation occurs. Concentrated salt solutions seem, from this
standpoint, and also because of high mechanical mobility and alkali-exchanging potential, feasible as metasomatic fluids for
a variety of deep-crust and upper mantle processes.

In situ seismic attenuationQ−1logs are derived from borehole velocity profiles and reveal sharp boundaries between morphologies of the extrusive volcanic layers in intermediate- and slow-spreading oceanic crust.Q−1logs are calculated from the scattering attenuation associated with vertical velocity heterogeneity in Ocean Drilling Program Holes 504B and 896A and in Hole 395A, located in 5.9–7.3 Ma crust on the Pacific and Atlantic plates, respectively. Our results strongly tie crustal properties to seismic measurables and observed geological structures: we find that the scattering attenuation can be used to identify the extrusive volcanic sequence because it is closely related to changes in the degree of vertical heterogeneity. We interpret a distinct decrease in the Q−1log at the transition below the extrusive volcanic layer to correspond with the seismic layer 2A/2B boundary. The boundary is located at 465 m depth below the sea floor in both Hole 395A and 504B, although this is likely to be a coincidence of the sediment thickness at these sites. Layer 2A is estimated to be approximately 150 m thick in Hole 504B and > 300 m thick in Hole 395A. Cyclic sequences of high-porosity pillows and low-porosity massive units in the uppermost 100 m of volcanics in Hole 395A result in large velocity heterogeneities which cause > 5 times more attenuation in this layer than in Hole 504B. In Hole 896A, by contrast, fewer pillows, more massive flows, and a greater volume of carbonate veins decrease the velocity heterogeneity and attenuation significantly over only 1 km distance from Hole 504B. We conclude that the attenuation in the extrusive volcanics of the ocean crust is largely controlled by variation in local heterogeneity and morphology as well as by subsequent hydrothermal alteration. The observed differences inQ−1profiles and layer 2A thickness at these sites may be attributed to variations in the volume and duration of volcanic activity at mid-ocean spreading centers for these Pacific and Atlantic ridge segments. 相似文献

Hydrologic regionalization is a useful tool that allows for the transfer of hydrological information from gaged sites to ungaged
sites. This study developed regional regression equations that relate the two parameters in Nash's IUH model to the basin
characteristics for 42 major watersheds in Taiwan. In the process of developing the regional equations, different regression
procedures including the conventional univariate regression, multivariate regression, and seemingly unrelated regression were
used. Multivariate regression and seeming unrelated regression were applied because there exists a rather strong correlation
between the Nash's IUH parameters. Furthermore, a validation study was conducted to examine the predictability of regional
equations derived by different regression procedures. The study indicates that hydrologic regionalization involving several
dependent variables should consider their correlations in the process of establishing the regional equations. The consideration
of such correlation will enhance the predictability of resulting regional equations as compared with the ones from the conventional

For four geomagnetic storms of middle intensity the relationship between the low-latitude magnetic field asymmetry using ASY indices and the intensity of the auroral eastward and westward electro-jet was considered. It was asked whether there exists a connection between ASY and the eastward electrojet. To answer this question equivalent current systems were estimated in mid-latitudes. It was found that the observations obviously show no correlative relationship between the low-latitude magnetic-field asymmetry and the eastward electrojet, whereas one exists between ASY and the westward electrojet. To explain the generally accepted common three-dimensional current system between the partial ring current and the eastward electrojet, a condensor model of the three-dimensional current system was developed. It could be shown that the short periodic variations of the partial ring current are shielded by the condensor and cannot influence the eastward-electrojet current. 相似文献
