This study documented the use of chemicals and biological products in marine and brackish water shrimp farming in Thailand, the world's top producer of farmed shrimp. Interviews were conducted with 76 shrimp farmers in three major shrimp producing regions, the eastern Gulf coast, the southern Gulf coast and the Andaman coast area. Farmers in the study used on average 13 different chemicals and biological products. The most commonly used products were soil and water treatment products, pesticides and disinfectants. Farmers in the southern Gulf coast area used a larger number of products than farmers in the other two areas. In the study, the use of more than 290 different chemicals and biological products was documented. Many of the pesticides, disinfectants and antibiotics used by the farmers could have negative effects on the cultured shrimps, cause a risk for food safety, occupational health, and/or have negative effects on adjacent ecosystems. Manufacturers and retailers of the products often neglected to provide farmers with necessary information regarding active ingredient and relevant instructions for safe and efficient use. 相似文献

U–Pb and Rb–Sr dating was undertaken in combination with P–T estimates to (1) constrain the time of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) eclogite formation in the Stadlandet UHP province of Norway, (2) date later crustal melting–migmatization of the eclogite country gneisses, and (3) temporally trace post-migmatite cooling and retrogression under amphibolite facies metamorphic conditions. In contrast to earlier U–Pb studies which used accessory minerals from the gneisses, we focused on the direct dating of minerals defining the HP assemblage. For the eclogite, rutile and omphacite fractions were analyzed for U–Pb, and from an adjacent migmatite leucosome titanites and K-feldspar. For Rb–Sr dating, phengite was measured for the eclogite, and biotite for two leucosome layers of the migmatite–eclogite complex. A U–Pb age of 389±7 (2σ) Ma is obtained if the full set of 12 rutile and five omphacite analyses is regressed (MSWD: 16), and 389±2 Ma for those nine data which strictly satisfy isochron conditions (MSWD: 0.78). The 389-Ma age is interpreted to date equilibration and freezing of the eclogite paragenesis at maximum temperatures of 770 °C, reached during decompression to 1.8 GPa. Decompression from 2.8 to 1.8 GPa occurred in the partial melting domain of granitic crust, with the migmatites being dated at 375±6 Ma by titanite and K-feldspar from an eclogite-adjacent granitic leucosome. This titanite age also shows that the U–Pb chronometer in rutile is very robust to high temperatures—it remained a closed system for at least 14 million years, at temperatures in excess to 650 °C. After decompression and migmatization, exhumation is accompanied by rapid cooling to reach the 300 °C isograde by 357± 9 Ma, determined by a biotite isochron for a leucosome in a slightly shallower structural level. In considering that the time of maximum pressure is bracketed by early zircon crystallization during subduction and later omphacite–rutile equilibration in the eclogites, an exhumation rate of 5 mm/year is deduced for initial exhumation, occurring between 394 and 389 Ma. For subsequent cooling from 770 to 600 °C, we obtain a rate of 2.3±1.3 mm/year. First stages of exhumation most likely occurred under an overall compressional regime, whereas Devonian basin formation is associated to detachment movements during 389–375 Ma exhumation. This period of extension is followed by a much younger, decoupled thermal phase at 327±5 Ma, occurring under static conditions within very restricted zones, most likely in association with the circulation of fluid phases along old discontinuities. Initial isotopic signatures of Sr and Pb substantiate Paleo- to Meso-Proterozoic crust formation times of the Stadlandet UHP province precursor lithologies. 相似文献

Polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) defoamers are used to improve process efficiency under extreme conditions during gas-oil separation, when other chemicals fail to perform. They are also used to reduce the oil content of process waters discharged to the marine environment, thereby serving an important function in reducing oil pollution. As a consequence of these applications small quantities of PDMS may also be released into the environment. This paper reviews the fate of PDMS in the marine environment and the extensive effect studies that have been conducted. The highest grade of metamorphism and associated structural elements in orogenic belts may be inherited from earlier orogenic
events. We illustrate this point using magmatic and metamorphic rocks from the southern steep belt of the Lepontine Gneiss
Dome (Central Alps). The U-Pb zircon ages from an anatectic granite at Verampio and migmatites at Corcapolo and Lavertezzo
yield 280–290 Ma, i.e., Hercynian ages. These ages indicate that the highest grade of metamorphism in several crystalline
nappes of the Lepontine Gneiss Dome is pre-Alpine. Alpine metamorphism reached sufficiently high grade to reset the Rb-Sr
and K-Ar systematics of mica and amphibole, but generally did not result in crustal melting, except in the steep belt to the
north of the Insubric Line, where numerous 29 to 26 Ma old pegmatites and aplites had intruded syn- and post-kinematically
into gneisses of the ductile Simplon Shear Zone. The emplacement age of these pegmatites gives a minimum estimate for the
age of the Alpine metamorphic peak in the Monte Rosa nappe. The U-Pb titanite ages of 33 to 31 Ma from felsic porphyritic
veins represent a minimum-age estimate for Alpine metamorphism in the Sesia Zone. A porphyric vein emplaced at 448±5 Ma (U-Pb
monazite) demonstrates that there existed a consolidated Caledonian basement in the Sesia Zone.

U-series ages measured by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) are reported for a Last Interglacial (LI) fossil coral
core from the Turtle Bay, Houtman Abrolhos islands, western Australia. The core is 33.4 m long the top of which is approximately
5 m a.p.s.l. (above present sea level). From the232Th concentrations and the reliability of the U-series ages, two sections in the core can be distinguished. Calculated U/Th
ages in core section I (3.3 m a.p.s.l to 11 m b.p.s.l) vary between 124±1.7 ka BP (3.3 m a.p.s.l.) and 132.5±1.8 ka (4 m b.p.s.l.,
i.e. below present sea level), and those of section II (11–23 m b.p.s.l.) between 140±3 and 214±5 ka BP, respectively. The
ages of core section I are in almost perfect chronological order, whereas for section II no clear age-depth relationship of
the samples can be recognised. Further assessments based on the ϖ234U(T) criteria reveal that none of the samples of core section II give reliable ages, whereas for core section I several samples
can be considered to be moderately reliable within 2 ka. The data of the Turtle Bay core complement and extend our previous
work from the Houtman Abrolhos showing that the sea level reached a height of approximately 4 m b.p.s.l at approximately 134
ka BP and a sea level highstand of at least 3.3 m a.p.s.l. at approximately 124 ka BP. Sea level dropped below its present
position at approximately 116 ka BP. Although the new data are in general accord with the Milankovitch theory of climate change,
a detailed comparison reveals considerable differences between the Holocene and LI sea level rise as monitored relative to
the Houtman Abrolhos islands. These observation apparently add further evidence to the growing set of data that the LI sea
level rise started earlier than recognised by SPECMAP chronology. A reconciliation of these contradictionary observations
following the line of arguments presented by Crowley (1994) are discussed with respect to the Milankovitch theory. 相似文献

Based on model calculations, the moisture of soil for sites with and without a cover of trees under the current and rising temperature was studied assuming a 5 °C increase in annual mean temperature over a period of 100 years. The calculation for southern Finland (61°N) showed that the soil moisture under elevated temperature could be reduced compared to that under current temperature conditions. This was also true for northern Finland (66°N), but there the reduction in soil moisture was less substantial. In particular, when trees were present, the soil moisture during the growing season was reduced due to enhanced evapotranspiration. In the presence of trees, the moisture content of the surface soil was only half that under the current temperature. In these conditions, reduced accumulation of snow and a thin humus layer allowed the soil to freeze to deep layers, thereby causing further reduction in soil moisture due to poor transfer of water deeper in the soil. 相似文献

Participatory Integrated Assessement (IA) methods complement analytical methods like IA-modeling in their explicit inclusion of stakeholders and decision-makers in the assessment. Integrated Assessment is perceived as a process of social learning involving scientists, stakeholders, policymakers and the society at large. We introduce a new approach to provide expert knowledge for participatory integrated assessments of regional climate change: `Interactive Citizen's Information Tools' (ICITs). ICITs provide citizens with expert knowledge about causes of climate change, potential impacts, and policy options to address anthropogenic climate change. In this paper we discuss the development and application of IMPACTS in IA-focus groups in Switzerland. IMPACTS is based on user-friendly hypermedia technologies and allows citizens to get informed on a broad range of potential climate change impacts – with an emphasison prevailing uncertainties. IA-focus groups are deliberative group discussions that make use of computer tools to support the discussion and assessment. The goal of IA-focus groups is to elicit how informed citizens judge the risks of anthropogenic climate change. Experiences with IMPACTS showed that the combination of focus groups with ICITs is a feasible and promising approach for a participatory IA of regional climate change, in particular, and of complex environmental issues, in general. 相似文献

We have studied particulate and dissolved arsenic species in sediment and porewaters at sites in the Bay of Biscay, France, ranging in depths from 150 to 2,800 m. At all stations, major redox species (oxygen, nitrate, ammonia, total and reactive iron and manganese, sulphate and sulphur) reflect early diagenetic depth sequences of redox reactions comparable to other marine environments. Vertical distributions of dissolved and particulate As species and major redox species are related to changes in redox conditions and their major carrier phases, such as Fe and Mn-oxides. Arsenic diagenesis appears strongly dependent on Fe cycling. A subsurface maximum of dissolved As and surface enrichment of particulate As correspond to dissolution and precipitation of Fe (III) phases. Except for the shallowest and most bioturbated site, flux calculations show three different vertical diffusive As fluxes: two upwards and one downwards. Phase changes of recycled As result in local accumulations of reactive As at different redox fronts. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the upward As flux toward the oxidized layer can explain the enrichment of HCl extractable particulate As in this layer. A portion of the upward diffusing As can escape the sediment and may be fixed onto settling Fe-oxides by adsorption or co-precipitation and contribute to reactive particulate As input (i.e., As is recycled across the water sediment interface). 相似文献
