We simulate the rise through the upper convection zone and emergence through the solar surface of initially uniform, untwisted,
horizontal magnetic flux, with the same entropy as the nonmagnetic plasma, that is advected into a domain 48 Mm wide by 20 Mm
deep. The magnetic field is advected upward by the diverging upflows and pulled down in the downdrafts, which produces a hierarchy
of loop-like structures of increasingly smaller scale as the surface is approached. There are significant differences between
the behavior of fields of 10 kG and 20 or 40 kG strength at 20 Mm depth. The 10 kG fields have little effect on the convective
flows and show small magnetic-buoyancy effects, reaching the surface in the typical fluid rise time from 20 Mm depth of 32
hours. 20 and 40 kG fields significantly modify the convective flows, leading to long, thin cells of ascending fluid aligned
with the magnetic field and their magnetic buoyancy makes them rise to the surface faster than the fluid rise time. The 20 kG
field produces a large-scale magnetic loop that as it emerges through the surface leads to the formation of a bipolar, pore-like

We propose a kinematic approach to searching for the stars that could be formed with the Sun in a common “parent” open cluster.
The approach consists in preselecting suitable candidates by the closeness of their space velocities to the solar velocity
and analyzing the parameters of their encounters with the solar orbit in the past in a time interval comparable to the lifetime
of stars. We consider stars from the Hipparcos catalog with available radial velocities. The Galactic orbits of stars have
been constructed in the Allen-Santillan potential by taking into account the perturbations from the spiral density wave. We
show that two stars, HIP 87382 and HIP 47399, are of considerable interest in our problem. Their orbits oscillate near the
solar orbit with an amplitude of ≈250 pc; there are short-term close encounters to distances <10 pc. Both stars have an evolutionary

The equation of state for the structure of the Sun and stars has to be precise to allow comparisons with observations, i.e., helioseismic inversions of thermodynamic quantities. Among the two of the most popular formalisms are (1) the OPAL equation of state developed at Livermore and (2) the Mihalas-Hummer-Däppen (MHD) equation of state. While OPAL has a solid theoretical foundation, and matches the observational data better, the MHD formalism is more intuitive, easy to realize, and has the possibility of adjustable parameters. Furthermore, it an open-source product in contrast to the proprietary OPAL. Recently a version of MHD has been obtained by including the so-called “Plank-Larkin partition function” and by adding scattering-state terms. The resulting formalism matches OPAL rather well. Here, we report on the next logical step, the implementation of this MHD upgrade into the simple and popular CEFF equation of state. Such an implementation will make it a flexible and convenient tool, allowing an approximative on-line implementation of OPAL in solar and stellar models. 相似文献

During the Pleistocene, the Rhine glacier system acted as a major south–north erosion and transport medium from the Swiss
Alps into the Upper Rhine Graben, which has been the main sediment sink forming low angle debris fans. Only some aggradation
resulted in the formation of terraces. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating have been applied to
set up a more reliable chronological frame of Late Pleistocene and Holocene fluvial activity in the western Hochrhein Valley
and in the southern part of the Upper Rhine Graben. The stratigraphically oldest deposits exposed, a braided-river facies,
yielded OSL age estimates ranging from 59.6 ± 6.2 to 33.1 ± 3.0 ka. The data set does not enable to distinguish between a
linear age increase triggered by a continuous autocyclical aggradation or two (or more) age clusters, for example around 35 ka
and around 55 ka, triggered by climate change, including stadial and interstadial periods (sensu Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles).
The braided river facies is discontinuously (hiatus) covered by coarse-grained gravel-rich sediments deposited most likely
during a single event or short-time period of major melt water discharge postdating the Last Glacial Maximum. OSL age estimates
of fluvial and aeolian sediments from the above coarse-grained sediment layer are between 16.4 ± 0.8 and 10.6 ± 0.5 ka, and
make a correlation with the Late Glacial period very likely. The youngest fluvial aggradation period correlates to the beginning
of the Little Ice Age, as confirmed by OSL and radiocarbon ages. 相似文献

Sediment–water incubations were used to study effects of episodic anoxia on filamentous Ulva sp. Treatments included undisturbed sediment with (AnoxSed) and without (NatSed) exposure to 5 days of anoxia, and cores
with only the top 0.5 cm of sediment (SurfSed; no macrofauna, restricted pore-water nutrient pool). All three treatments contained
Ulva propagules. An Ulva mat developed in the SurfSed, and after the anoxic period in the AnoxSed cores. No growth was observed in the NatSed treatment.
In the AnoxSed, Ulva was progressively removed upon reoxygenation through grazing by Nereis. The results suggest that episodic anoxia stimulates the growth of macroalgal mats not only by increasing the availability
of nutrients from the sediment, but also by reducing macrofaunal grazing pressure. Infauna (grazing and bioturbation), benthic
microalgae (nutrient competition and retention), and pore-water nutrients appear key components in a biogeochemical network
with complex feedbacks controlling the growth of green-algal mats in shallow-water systems. 相似文献

Multiphase flow modelling is a major issue in the assessment of groundwater pollution. Three-phase flows are commonly governed by mathematical models that associate a pressure equation with two saturation equations. These equations involve a number of secondary variables that reflect the fluid behaviour in a porous medium. To improve the computational efficiency of multiphase flow simulators, several simplified reformulations of three-phase flow equations have been proposed. However, they require the construction of new secondary variables adapted to the reformulated flow equations. In this article, two different approaches are compared to quantify these variables. Chondrules are microscopic, recrystallized melt droplets found in chondritic meteorites. High-resolution isotope analyses of minor elements require large enough element quantities which are obtained by dissolving entire chondrules. This work emphasizes the importance of X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to detect features that can significantly affect the bulk chondrule isotope composition. It thereby expands on other works by looking into chondrules from a wide range of chondrites including CR, CV, CB, CM, L, and EL samples before turning toward complex and time-consuming chemical processing. The features considered are metal and igneous rims, compound chondrules, matrix remnants, and metal contents. In addition to the identification of these features, computed tomography prevents the inclusion of non-chondrule samples (pure matrix or metal) as well as samples where two different chondrule fragments with potentially different isotope compositions are held together by matrix. Matrix surrounding chondrules is also easily detected and the affected chondrules can be omitted or reprocessed. The results strongly encourage to perform XCT before dissolution of chondrules for isotope analysis as a non-invasive method. 相似文献

Changes in the persistence of dry and wet periods are of particular interest for many sectors, as long-term deviations from normal precipitation strongly affect the water availability. Here, an indicator is introduced to explore variability and trends of long-lasting dry and wet periods by using decile based thresholds. The test of three different thresholds for ending those periods revealed only slight influences of the chosen threshold on the spatiotemporal pattern and trends. The methodology of the deciles indicator is illustrated and studied exemplarily for a spatially highly resolved data set for Saxony, Germany within 1901–2010. Within that region decile wet and dry periods, respectively, occur approximately four times within 10 years, last on average 11 months and cover on average more than 35 % of the stations. Several years to decades long periods with particularly frequent and/or long decile dry or wet periods were identified. The computed trends strongly depend upon the analysis period, as frequency, duration and spatial coverage of decile periods show strong variations up to multi-decadal time scales. Nonetheless, there is some indication that dry period coverage increased within the 20th century, while wet period coverage decreased. The southern Congo Craton is widely overlain by Meso- to Cenozoic sediments of the northern Kalahari Basin, which hamper any correlation of basement units. The latter are represented by the Archaean Angola and Kasai Blocks, while the southern cratonic margin is framed by several Meso- to Neoproterozoic orogenic belts. For provenance analysis of the sedimentary cover and reconstruction of the main zircon-forming events, we studied zircons from recent sediments of the largest rivers at the southern margin of the Congo Craton. U–Pb zircon ages suggest a major amount of the sediments to originate from E Lufilian and Kibaran Belts, while input from the S Damara Belt seems to increase to the W. Ages related to the Angola Block were only noticed in the westernmost parts of the working area, which is not in accordance with the SE-trending drainage pattern, proposed to have been onset during the Cretaceous. Thus, it is assumed that the Meso- to Cenozoic sedimentary cover extended further west than today prior to the Mesozoic to Neogene uplift of the Angola Block and that subsequent erosion exhumed the basement stepwise from west to east. A recurrent destabilisation of the southern margin of the Congo Craton at ~2.7, 1.9, 1.0 and 0.6 Ga is supposed to be represented by major peaks in the age distribution pattern of the total amount of concordant zircons. This is in accordance with similar studies in adjacent areas. Additionally, the obtained data fit well to several hypothesised major events during the supercontinent cycle. 相似文献
