The potential of a geothermal area is primarily dependent on volume and temperature of the reservoir and adequacy of fluid supply. Inadequate fluid supply may be a more common limiting factor than inadequate heat supply, for heat stored in the upper 10,000 ft of many hot spring systems is 1,000 to 10,000 times their annual natural heat flow. Except in very porous reservoirs, most of this heat is stored in rocks rather than in pore fluids. Geothermal fields can be classified as hot spring systems or as deep insulated reservoirs with little surface expression; gradations also exist. Hot spring systems have high near-surface permeability, at least locally on faults and fractures, permitting fluids to escape at high rates. Owing to vigorous circulation and escaping fluids and heat, near-surface temperatures are high, but temperatures deep in the system are lower than would prevail with inhibited escape. Deep reservoirs with little surface expression require permeable reservoir rocks capped by insulating rocks of low permeability. Larderello, Italy, and Salton Sea, California, have slight leakage, but others may have no leakage. Liquid water, which can be at temperatures far above 100° C because of existing pressures, is generally the dominant fluid. Steam can form by boiling as hot water rises to levels of lower pressure. However, in several explored systems the heat supply is so high and rate of discharge of water so low that steam exists even deep in the system. Dry steam areas are probably rare. About 30 areas in the United States have been explored for geothermal energy, but dry steam has been proved only at « The Geysers ». Extensive utilisation of geothermal energy must therefore depend largely upon steam « flashed » from hot water with decrease in pressure. Problems that confront broad utilisation of geothermal energy include: 1) discovery of reservoirs with adequate supply of energy and natural fluids; 2) deposition of CaCO; or SiO2; 3) chemical corrosion; 4) objectionable chemicals in some effluents; and 5) inapplicability of existing public laws. The optimum environment for a geothermal reservoir includes:

A depth of at least two miles provides enough pressure to insure water of high temperature; 5 miles may be too deep for effective transfer of heat to circulating water. This paper outlines in general terms the role of metamorphic transformations during rock deformation. Long duration, triaxial stress relaxation tests at 600°C. 160 MPa confining pressure on wet crushed basalt, sheared in sawcuts made in intact basalt cylinders are reported. Mechanical data are interpreted in terms of a material which shows a small strain-rate sensitivity to large variations in applied stress, but which work hardens dramatically as a result of marked microstructural changes which occur during straining. Permanent distortions of c. 20% were produced in the samples.Tests at 100 MPa pore-water pressure resulted in the formation of oriented overgrowths of amphibole, preferentially developed on less stressed interfaces between original grains and in pore spaces. Substantial redistribution of feldspar also occurred. At low pore pressures no amphibole formed and only feldspar was recrystallized. Much of the original porosity of the rock was eliminated in all cases.The mechanical and microstructural data are interpreted in terms of flow by some combination of grain sliding and diffusional accommodation, with the reprecipitated, diffused material being the product of a chemical reaction involving all original solid phases plus water. From a consideration of the effects of the reaction on the chemical potential gradients driving diffusion, it is concluded that although the syntectonic hydration exerts a profound effect on the microstructural and mineralogical development of the rock during deformation, there is no substantial enhancement of the rate of strain.Similar microstructural developments also occur in natural rocks deformed during retrogressive metamorphic events, and examples are described for comparison. 相似文献

The continental margin off the Makran coast of Iran and Pakistan is an excellent example of active deformation of sediments at a compressive plate boundary. Seismic reflection profiles across the margin suggest that relatively flat-lying sediments from the Oman abyssal plain are being scraped off the Arabian plate and accreted onto the Eurasian plate in a series of tightly folded sediment ridges aligned parallel to the coast. The most active folding appears to be occurring in the southernmost of the ridges, where it has formed a frontal fold up to 750 m high, with a width of 3–4 km. Filling of the basins between the ridges with later sediment becomes progressively more complete towards the north, and produces a smooth continental shelf near the coast, where the ridges are completely buried by sediment. Evidence for the possible presence of northward-dipping thrust faults which uplift the ridges towards the coast is seen in the consistent back-tilting of the sediments in the inter-fold basins.Below the abyssal plain to the south of the folded zone the sediments are divided by a prominent reflector, horizon A, into an upper group of flat-lying beds that overlie strata which dip gently to the north. A sharp velocity increase occurs across this horizon. The deepest observable reflector, horizon B, is seen as a series of diffraction hyperbolae which dip conformably northwards at about 1°. Velocity determinations from refraction and variable-angle reflection stations over the abyssal plain indicate a thick pile of low-velocity material which is probably sediment lying above horizon B. The material directly below horizon B has a velocity of 4.5 ± 0.2km/s and is probably volcanic in origin. 相似文献

Tongue-shaped and lobate rock glaciers are recognized in most alpine regions today. For the tongue-shaped, two situations emerge: those with buried glacier ice (debris-covered glaciers) called ice-cored rock glaciers, and those with interstitial ice known as ice-cemented rock glaciers. Those with ice cores are revealed by depressions between rock glacier and headwall cliff (where a former glacier melted), longitudinal marginal and central meandering furrows, and collapse pits. Ice-cemented rock glaciers ordinarily do not possess these features. As applied to 18 rock glaciers in the Colorado Front Range, 11 of 12 east of the Continental Divide are ice-cored, 6 west of the Divide are ice-cemented. The majority of lobate rock glaciers in the Colorado Front Range are on the south sides of valleys, and, except for talus, are the most voluminous form of mass wasting. All those active and above treeline have characteristics common to all rock glaciers. In addition, they originate from talus, contain interstitial ice, move outward from valley walls at 1–6 cm/yr, and transport more debris as a process of erosion than heretofore realized. Block fields and block slopes, in polar and alpine regions, are thin accumulations of angular to subrounded blocks, on bedrock, weathered rock, or transported debris. They extend along slopes parallel to the contour. Block streams are similar but extend downslope normal to the contour and into valleys. They are made of interlocked blocks without interstitial detritus, but many have finer material deeper inside. The fabric of surface blocks indicates that motion most likely occurred during a periglacial time when interstitial debris, now washed or piped out, permitted movement of the whole deposit. 相似文献

Electrochemical modelling may provide fast order-of-magnitude estimates of energy and mass transfer in crops and partly fill the gap between rigid, expensive field experiments and oversimplified mathematical modelling. The technique comprises breaking up a flowing electrolyte in a manner analogous — but not necessarily completely similar — to the way the atmospheric flow is broken up by crops and studying the flow of ions in the electrolyte.The effects of variations in free-flow velocity, plant spacing, row spacing and orientation on velocity field, transfer coefficients and eddy diffusivities have been studied in an electrochemical model under conditions relevant to well-ventilated crops with relatively simple canopy structure. A one-dimensional analytical model is developed for the transfer at solid surfaces, with direct proportionality between transfer coefficient and eddy diffusivity. The proportionality constant has values in the model of (3.5±0.5)×10–3cm–1 at the ground and (5+-2)×10–4cm–1 (for a cylindrical probe) near canopy top. The latter is not too different from the values proposed for foliage surfaces in real canopies, viz., approximately 1×10–3 cm–1 (Philip, 1964) and 7×10–4 cm–1 (Uchijima, 1966). may therefore become a useful parameter in scaling transfer coefficients from systems with different molecular diffusion properties.A tentative extrapolation of measured data to corresponding values in air is given. The spatial and temporal changes in element and mineral concentrations in regolith profiles in a chronosequence developed on marine terraces along coastal California are interpreted in terms of chemical weathering rates and processes. In regoliths up to 15 m deep and 226 kyrs old, quartz-normalized mass transfer coefficients indicate non-stoichiometric preferential release of Sr > Ca > Na from plagioclase along with lesser amounts of K, Rb and Ba derived from K-feldspar. Smectite weathering results in the loss of Mg and concurrent incorporation of Al and Fe into secondary kaolinite and Fe-oxides in shallow argillic horizons. Elemental losses from weathering of the Santa Cruz terraces fall within the range of those for other marine terraces along the Pacific Coast of North America.Residual amounts of plagioclase and K-feldspar decrease with terrace depth and increasing age. The gradient of the weathering profile bs is defined by the ratio of the weathering rate, R to the velocity at which the profile penetrates into the protolith. A spreadsheet calculator further refines profile geometries, demonstrating that the non-linear regions at low residual feldspar concentrations at shallow depth are dominated by exponential changes in mineral surface-to-volume ratios and at high residual feldspar concentrations, at greater depth, by the approach to thermodynamic saturation. These parameters are of secondary importance to the fluid flux qh, which in thermodynamically saturated pore water, controls the weathering velocity and mineral losses from the profiles. Long-term fluid fluxes required to reproduce the feldspar weathering profiles are in agreement with contemporary values based on solute Cl balances (qh = 0.025-0.17 m yr−1).During saturation-controlled and solute-limited weathering, the greater loss of plagioclase relative to K-feldspar is dependent on the large difference in their respective solubilities instead of the small difference between their respective reaction kinetics. We present a result of cross-correlating the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalogue with the spectroscopic catalogues of galaxies in the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Final Data Release of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Second Data Release of the 6dF Galaxy Survey. We have identified 324 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) including 190 newly discovered ULIRGs, and two hyperluminous infrared galaxies. Adding these new ULIRGs, we increase the number of known ULIRGs by about 30 per cent. The reliability of the cross-correlation is estimated using the likelihood ratio method. The incompleteness of our sample introduced by the identification procedure in this study is estimated to be about 5 per cent. Our sample covers the redshift range of z = 0.037–0.517 with a median redshift of , which is larger than that of the sample of previously known ULIRGs. 相似文献
