This paper presents the background, objectives, and preliminary outcomes from the first year of activities of the Polish–Norwegian project CHIHE (Climate Change Impact on Hydrological Extremes). The project aims to estimate the influence of climate changes on extreme river flows (low and high) and to evaluate the impact on the frequency of occurrence of hydrological extremes. Eight “twinned” catchments in Poland and Norway serve as case studies. We present the procedures of the catchment selection applied in Norway and Poland and a database consisting of near-natural ten Polish and eight Norwegian catchments constructed for the purpose of climate impact assessment. Climate projections for selected catchments are described and compared with observations of temperature and precipitation available for the reference period. Future changes based on those projections are analysed and assessed for two periods, the near future (2021–2050) and the far-future (2071–2100). The results indicate increases in precipitation and temperature in the periods and regions studied both in Poland and Norway. 相似文献

We enhance a robust parallel finite element model for coasts and estuaries cases with the use of N-Best refinement algorithms,
in multilevel partitioning scheme. Graph partitioning is an important step to construct the parallel model, in which computation
speed is a big concern. The partitioning strategy includes the division of the research domain into several semi-equal-sized
sub-domains, minimizing the sum weight of edges between different sub-domains. Multilevel schemes for graph partitioning are
divided into three phases: coarsening, partitioning, and uncoarsening. In the uncoarsening phase, many refinement algorithms
have been proposed previously, such as KL, Greedy, and Boundary refinements. In this study, we propose an N-Best refinement
algorithm and show its advantages in our case study of Xiamen Bay. Compared with original partitioning algorithm in previous
models, the N-Best algorithm can speed up the computation by 1.9 times, and the simulation results are in a good match with

The 4-year data sets (1998–2001) of PM10 and other gaseous pollutants at four rural and urban monitoring sites provided by Environmental Protection Department of
Hong Kong have been analyzed for days of extremely high and low PM10 levels. The annual means of PM10 concentrations are between 37 and 57 μg/m3. The level of high PM10 concentration is defined from the comparison of local and international standards. Episode days are mainly controlled by
different meteorological conditions: the continental outflow, the land-sea breeze/weak synoptic forcings and the approaching
tropical cyclones. Integrated approaches have been used to distinguish between the predominantly “territory wide” and “long-range
transport” (LRT) episode days. Case studies of these types of episodes are presented and the number of episode days per year
for each type has been estimated. It is found that the LRT contributions are significant and account for ∼66% of the PM10 episode days. Very high correlations between CO and PM10 concentrations, and between SO2 and PM10 concentrations, can be found during the “territory wide” episode days which implies the important contributions of fossil
fuel combustion to the PM10 episodes. The number of “low level” PM10 days per year has decreased by a factor near 3 from 1998 to 2001. Precipitation scavenging is the major process causing low
levels of PM10, irrespective of the associated weather systems. The regional annual background level is ∼9 μg/m3. With the exception of seasalt components, the average elemental concentrations of major inorganic species are similar for
all of the sites during LRT events and constitute representative compositions of PM10 during such events. 相似文献

In this paper, a finite difference scheme with an efficient 2-D numerical wave absorber for solving the extended Boussinesq equations as derived by Nwogu (Nwogu, O., 1993. Alternative form of Boussinesq equations for nearshore wave propagation. J. Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, ASCE 119, 618–638) is proposed. The alternate direction iterative method combined with an efficient predictor-corrector scheme are adopted for the numerical solution of the governing differential equations. To parameterize the contribution of unresolved small-scale motions, the philosophy of the large eddy simulation is applied on the horizontal plane. The proposed method is verified by two test cases where experimental data are available for comparison. The first case is wave diffraction around a semi-infinite breakwater studied by Briggs et al. (Briggs, M.J., Thompson, E.F., Vincent, C.L., 1995. Wave diffraction around breakwater. Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, ASCE 121, 23–35). The other case is wave concentration by a navigation channel as reported by Yu et al. (Yu, Y.-X., Liu, S.-X., Li, Y.S., Wai, O.W.H., 2000. One of the potential solutions to steel-corrosion-related problems is the usage of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) as a replacement of steel bars. In the past few decades, researchers have conducted a large number of experimental and theoretical studies on the behavior of small size glass fiber reinforce polymer (GFRP) bars (diameter smaller than 20 mm). However, the behavior of large size GFRP bar is still not well understood. Particularly, few studies were conducted on the stress relaxation of grouted entirely large diameter GFRP soil nail. This paper investigates the effect of stress levels on the relaxation behavior of GFRP soil nail under sustained deformation ranging from 30% to 60% of its ultimate strain. In order to study the behavior of stress relaxation, two B-GFRP soil nail element specimens were developed and instrumented with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors which were used to measure strains along the B-GFRP bars. The test results reveal that the behavior of stress relaxation of B-GFRP soil nail element subjected to pre-stress is significantly related to the elapsed time and the initial stress of relaxation procedure. The newly proposed model for evaluating stress relaxation ratio can substantially reflect the influences of the nature of B-GFRP bar and the property of grip body. The strain on the nail body can be redistributed automatically. Modulus reduction is not the single reason for the stress degradation. 相似文献
