Permeameter data verify new turbulence process for MODFLOW 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A sample of Key Largo Limestone from southern Florida exhibited turbulent flow behavior along three orthogonal axes as reported in recently published permeameter experiments. The limestone sample was a cube measuring 0.2 m on edge. The published nonlinear relation between hydraulic gradient and discharge was simulated using the turbulent flow approximation applied in the Conduit Flow Process (CFP) for MODFLOW-2005 mode 2, CFPM2. The good agreement between the experimental data and the simulated results verifies the utility of the approach used to simulate the effects of turbulent flow on head distributions and flux in the CFPM2 module of MODFLOW-2005. 相似文献

It is suggested that leakage currents flow across Devon, north of Exeter, from large-scale electric-current systems induced in the Atlantic Ocean by the geomagnetic variations incident on the Atlantic Ocean from the ionosphere. Garnets in an amphibolite-facies metasediment from Sulitjelma, North Norway yield precise and concordant SmNd, UPb and RbSr ages that relate directly to the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of mineral growth. Differential mineral reaction between graphitic and non-graphitic layers within this sample preserves a record of theP-T and time (t) history experienced during Barrovian regional metamorphism. Garnets in graphitic layers grew during prograde metamorphism at462 ± 16°C and5.2 ± 0.5 kbar under conditions of lowaH2O, and yield indistinguishable147Sm143Nd and238U206Pb ages of434.1 ± 1.2 Ma and433.9 ± 1.0 Ma, respectively. In contrast, garnet growth in adjacent graphite-free layers did not occur untilP-T conditions of540 ± 18°C and8.0 ± 1.0 kbar were attained, with continued growth in response to minor heating and decompression with final matrix equilibration at544 ± 16°C and7.0 ± 1.0 kbar. The inclusion-free garnet rims in this assemblage record indistinguishable147Sm143Nd and238U206Pb ages of424.6 ± 1.2 Ma and423.4± 1.7 Ma, respectively. These results provide precise estimates for average heating and burial rates during prograde metamorphism of 8.6−4.4+7.5°C Ma−1 and 0.8−0.5+0.9 km Ma−1, respectively. Rb and Sr exchange between coexisting silicates in the graphite-free assemblage continued for some 37 Ma after the “peak” of metamorphism, and require an average cooling rate of about 4.0°C Ma−1 during uplift. These results illustrate a clear relationship between reaction history and the timing of mineral growth and provide definitive constraints on the rates of thermal and tectonic processes accompanying regional metamorphism. 相似文献

Papago Park, Arizona, is a pediment-inselberg complex that hosts a variety of well developed tafoni and alveolar weathering forms. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the nature of chemical weathering associated with the tafoni using backscatter electron microscopy (BSE) and quantitative wavelength dispersive X-ray analysis (WDS). Calcium-rich and iron-rich coatings occur on the outer shells of the tafoni. Calcium carbonate precipitation within mineral microfractures occurs on the underside of the tafoni. Chemical weathering of primary mineral grains provides a source of material found in the coatings. The WDS analyses show a near-complete lack of salt-forming elements. When subjected to major earthquakes, core-stiffened buildings may begin to tip. That is, the overturning moment on the core's footing becomes so large that the footing breaks contact with the ground and begins to rock. A method is described for including the effects of tipping in the analysis of multistorey core-braced structures. Curves are presented which summarize the maximum response to both pulse and earthquake excitations; these data are elucidated via a typical design example. By comparison to fixed-base behaviour, tipping greatly reduces the base shear and moment. This makes possible a more economical design. However, attention must be devoted to avoiding potential soil-mechanics problems associated with the wobbling behaviour of the tipping core. 相似文献

It is shown that the so-called Kirchhoff-summation operator is of a very wide-band nature and even contains an evanescent part. As a consequence, discretization may cause serious aliasing errors, particularly for small extrapolation steps. Cerro Pinto is a Pleistocene rhyolite tuff ring-dome complex located in the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The complex
is composed of four tuff rings and four domes that were emplaced in three eruptive stages marked by changes in vent location
and eruptive character. During Stage I, vent clearing produced a 1.5-km-diameter tuff ring that was then followed by emplacement
of two domes of approximately 0.2 km3 each. With no apparent hiatus in activity, Stage II began with the explosive formation of a tuff ring ~2 km in diameter adjacent
to and north of the earlier ring. Subsequent Stage II eruptions produced two smaller tuff rings within the northern tuff ring
as well as a small dome that was mostly destroyed by explosions during its growth. Stage III involved the emplacement of a
0.04 km3 dome within the southern tuff ring. Cerro Pinto’s eruptive history includes sequences that follow simple rhyolite-dome models,
in which a pyroclastic phase is followed immediately by effusive dome emplacement. Some aspects of the eruption, however,
such as the explosive reactivation of the system and explosive dome destruction, are more complex. These events are commonly
associated with polygenetic structures, such as stratovolcanoes or calderas, in which multiple pulses of magma initiate reactivation.
A comparison of major and trace element geochemistry with nearby Pleistocene silicic centers does not show indication of any
co-genetic relationship, suggesting that Cerro Pinto was produced by a small, isolated magma chamber. The compositional variation
of the erupted material at Cerro Pinto is minimal, suggesting that there were not multiple pulses of magma responsible for
the complex behavior of the volcano and that the volcanic system was formed in a short time period. The variety of eruptive
style observed at Cerro Pinto reflects the influence of quickly exhaustible water sources on a short-lived eruption. The rising
magma encountered small amounts of groundwater that initiated eruption phases. Once a critical magma:water ratio was exceeded,
the eruptions became dry and sub-plinian to plinian. The primary characteristic of Cerro Pinto is the predominance of fall
deposits, suggesting that the level at which rising magma encountered water was deep enough to allow substantial fragmentation
after the water source was exhausted. Isolated rhyolite domes are rare and are not currently viewed as prominent volcanic
hazards, but the evolution of Cerro Pinto demonstrates that individual domes may have complex cycles, and such complexity
must be taken into account when making hazard risk assessments. 相似文献
