Abstract— We present here ion microprobe analyses of rare earth and other selected trace and minor elements in pyroxenes of shergottite Queen Alexandra Range 94201 and lunar basalt 15555. Pyroxene zonation patterns record the crystallization histories of these two basaltic samples from Mars and the Moon, respectively, and allow a comparison of mafic melt evolution on these two planetary bodies. Elemental abundances and trends in pyroxenes of these two rocks indicate that their minerals formed by continuous, closed system fractional crystallization of their respective parent melts. This further supports the idea that QUE 94201 closely represents the composition of a true Martian basaltic melt (McSween et al., 1996). The main differences in pyroxene elemental zonation patterns in these two objects are attributed to earlier crystallization of whitlockite in QUE 94201 (i.e., before the Fe-rich pyroxenes) than in 15555 (after the Fe-rich pyroxenes). The size of Eu anomalies in pyroxenes of QUE 94201 is intermediate between that in pyroxenes of 15555 and the other shergottites and may imply that fO2 conditions during crystallization of this Martian basalt were significantly more reducing than for other shergottites, although not quite as reducing as for lunar basalts. Cerium anomalies appear to be less prevalent in pyroxenes of QUE 94201 than other Antarctic shergottites and could be indicative of lesser degree of weathering in the Antarctic. 相似文献

The purpose of the paper is to present the statistical characterictics of mid-latitude VLF emissions (both unstructured hiss and structured emissions) based on the VLF data obtained at Moshiri in Japan (geomag. lat. 35°; L = 1.6) during the period January 1974–March 1984. Local time dependence of occurrence rate and the association with geomagnetic disturbances have been studied for both types of emissions. Both types (unstructured and structured) of mid-latitude VLF emissions are found to have definite correlations with geomagnetic disturbances. Then, the time delay of the emission event behind the associated geomagnetic disturbance has enabled us to estimate the resonant electron energy for VLF hiss to be 5 keV at L = 3–4 and that for structured VLF emissions to be considerably larger, such as 20 keV at L 4. Combined considerations of these estimated resonant energies, theoretical electron drift orbits and the local time dependences, allow us to construct the following model to explain the experimental results in a reasonable way. Electrons in a wide energy range are injected during disturbances around the midnight sector, followed by the eastward drift. Lower energy ( 5 keV) electrons tend to drift closer to the Earth, resulting in the dawnside enhancement of VLF hiss within the plasmasphere. Further, these lower energy electrons are allowed to enter the duskside asymmetric plasmaspheric bulge and to generate VLF hiss there. On the other hand, higher energy (20 keV) electrons tend to drift at L shells farther away from the Earth and those substorm electrons are responsible for the generation of structured VLF emissions around dawn due to an increase of plasma density from the sunlit ionosphere. However, such higher energy electrons are forbidden from entering the duskside of the magnetosphere and so we cannot expect a duskside peak in the occurrence of structured VLF emissions, which is in agreement with the experimental result. 相似文献

Using entropy theory, a methodology was developed for the evaluation and redesign of groundwater quality monitoring wells in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. Essential to the methodology is the development of a Transinformation Model (TM) which yields the amount of information transfer and the dependency between the wells as a function of distance. The TM parameters, such as the minimum transinformation and the range, were employed for evaluating the network which revealed that most of the distances between wells were less than the range. It also indicated that a high percentage of redundant information existed in the network. Therefore, the network was reduced by superimposing a square pattern over the monitored area and selecting one well per square block in a stratified pattern. The methodology was tested using the chloride data collected from 1972–2000 from 417 groundwater quality monitoring wells in the Gaza Strip. The number of the groundwater quality monitoring wells in the Gaza Strip was reduced by 53%, while there was 26% redundant information based on the minimum existing distance between wells. High-resolution Hα filtergrams (0.2″) obtained with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope resolve numerous very thin, thread-like
structures in solar filaments. The threads are believed to represent thin magnetic flux tubes that must be longer than the
observable threads. We report on evidence for small-amplitude (1 – 2 km s−1) waves propagating along a number of threads with an average phase velocity of 12 km s−1 and a wavelength of 4″. The oscillatory period of individual threads vary from 3 to 9 minutes. Temporal variation of the
Doppler velocities averaged over a small area containing a number of individual threads shows a short-period (3.6 minutes)
wave pattern. These short-period oscillations could possibly represent fast modes in accordance with numerical fibril models
proposed by Díaz et al. (Astron. Astrophys.

We will present detailed observations of the asymmetrical eruption of a large quiescent filament on 24 November 2002, which was followed by a two-ribbon flare, three coronal dimmings, endpoint brightenings, and a very fast halo-type coronal mass ejection (CME). Before the eruption, the filament lay along the main neutral line (MNL) underneath a single-arcade helmet streamer with a simple bipolar configuration. However, photospheric magnetic fields on both sides of the filament showed an asymmetrical distribution, and the filament and MNL were not located just at the center of the streamer base but were closer to the eastern leg of the streamer arcade. Therefore, instead of erupting along the streamer’s symmetrical axis, the filament showed a nonradial and asymmetrical eruption. It lifted from the eastern flank of the streamer arcade to impact the western leg directly, leading to an asymmetrical CME that expanded westward; eventually the streamer was disrupted significantly. Accordingly, the opposite-polarity coronal dimmings at both sides of the filament forming in the eruption also showed an asymmetrical area distribution. We thus assume that the streamer arcade could guide the filament at the early eruption phase but failed to restrain it later. Consistent with previous results, these observations suggest that the global background magnetic field can impose additional action on the initial eruption of the filament and CME, as well as the dimming configuration. 相似文献

Abstract— The age, structure, composition, and petrogenesis of the martian lithosphere have been constrained by spacecraft imagery and remote sensing. How well do martian meteorites conform to expectations derived from this geologic context? Both data sets indicate a thick, extensive igneous crust formed very early in the planet's history. The composition of the ancient crust is predominantly basaltic, possibly andesitic in part, with sediments derived from volcanic rocks. Later plume eruptions produced igneous centers like Tharsis, the composition of which cannot be determined because of spectral obscuration by dust. Martian meteorites (except Allan Hills 84001) are inferred to have come from volcanic flows in Tharsis or Elysium, and thus are not petrologically representative of most of the martian surface. Remote‐sensing measurements cannot verify the fractional crystallization and assimilation that have been documented in meteorites, but subsurface magmatic processes are consistent with orbital imagery indicating thick crust and large, complex magma chambers beneath Tharsis volcanoes. Meteorite ejection ages are difficult to reconcile with plausible impact histories for Mars, and oversampling of young terrains suggests either that only coherent igneous rocks can survive the ejection process or that older surfaces cannot transmit the required shock waves. The mean density and moment of inertia calculated from spacecraft data are roughly consistent with the proportions and compositions of mantle and core estimated from martian meteorites. Thermal models predicting the absence of crustal recycling, and the chronology of the planetary magnetic field agree with conclusions from radiogenic isotopes and paleomagnetism in martian meteorites. However, lack of vigorous mantle convection, as inferred from meteorite geochemistry, seems inconsistent with their derivation from the Tharsis or Elysium plumes. Geological and meteoritic data provide conflicting information on the planet's volatile inventory and degassing history, but are apparently being reconciled in favor of a periodically wet Mars. Spacecraft measurements suggesting that rocks have been chemically weathered and have interacted with recycled saline groundwater are confirmed by weathering products and stable isotope fractionations in martian meteorites. 相似文献

We derive astrophysical and structural parameters of the poorly studied open clusters NGC 6866, NGC 7062, and NGC 2360 based on filtered 2MASS (J, J ? H) diagrams, and stellar radial density profiles. The field star decontamination technique is utilised for selecting high-probability cluster members. The E(B ? V) reddening values of the three clusters derived from 2MASS JHKs agree with those inferred from UBV and uvby ? β photometries. We find that the core mass function slopes are flatter than the halo’s for the three clusters. The large core and cluster radii of NGC 6866 and NGC 2360 indicate an expanded core, which may suggest the presence of stellar mass black-holes. NGC 2360 is located in the third quadrant (? = 229°.80), where Giant Molecular Clouds are scarce that, together with its relatively large mass (~1800 m⊙), might explain its longevity (~1.8 Gyr) in the Galaxy. 相似文献

We report simultaneous multicolour observations in 5 bands (UBVRI) of the flickering variability of the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr. Our aim is to estimate the parameters (colours, temperature, size) of the fireballs that produce the optical flares. The observed rise times of the optical flares are in the interval 220‐440 s. We estimate the dereddened colours of the fireballs as (U ‐B)0∼0.8‐1.4, (B ‐V)0∼0.03‐0.24, and (V ‐I)0∼0.26‐0.78. We find for the fireballs temperatures of 10000‐25000 K, masses of (7‐90)x1019 g, and sizes of (3‐7)x109 cm (using a distance of d = 86 pc).
