Most state-of-the art global coupled models simulate a weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC)
in climate change scenarios but the mechanisms leading to this weakening are still being debated. The third version of the
CNRM (Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques) global atmosphere-ocean-sea ice coupled model (CNRM-CM3) was used to
conduct climate change experiments for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC AR4).
The analysis of the A1B scenario experiment shows that global warming leads to a slowdown of North Atlantic deep ocean convection
and thermohaline circulation south of Iceland. This slowdown is triggered by a freshening of the Arctic Ocean and an increase
in freshwater outflow through Fram Strait. Sea ice melting in the Barents Sea induces a local amplification of the surface
warming, which enhances the cyclonic atmospheric circulation around Spitzberg. This anti-clockwise circulation forces an increase
in Fram Strait outflow and a simultaneous increase in ocean transport of warm waters toward the Barents Sea, favouring further
sea ice melting and surface warming in the Barents Sea. Additionally, the retreat of sea ice allows more deep water formation
north of Iceland and the thermohaline circulation strengthens there. The transport of warm and saline waters toward the Barents
Sea is further enhanced, which constitutes a second positive feedback. 相似文献

A preindustrial climate experiment was conducted with the third version of the CNRM global atmosphere–ocean–sea ice coupled
model (CNRM-CM3) for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (IPCC AR4). This experiment is
used to investigate the main physical processes involved in the variability of the North Atlantic ocean convection and the
induced variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC). Three ocean convection sites are simulated,
in the Labrador, Irminger and Greenland–Iceland–Norwegian (GIN) Seas in agreement with observations. A mechanism linking the
variability of the Arctic sea ice cover and convection in the GIN Seas is highlighted. Contrary to previous suggested mechanisms,
in CNRM-CM3 the latter is not modulated by the variability of freshwater export through Fram Strait. Instead, the variability
of convection is mainly driven by the variability of the sea ice edge position in the Greenland Sea. In this area, the surface
freshwater balance is dominated by the freshwater input due to the melting of sea ice. The ice edge position is modulated
either by northwestward geostrophic current anomalies or by an intensification of northerly winds. In the model, stronger
than average northerly winds force simultaneous intense convective events in the Irminger and GIN Seas. Convection interacts
with the thermohaline circulation on timescales of 5–10 years, which translates into MOC anomalies propagating southward from
the convection sites. 相似文献

A tensor magnetotelluric test survey was carried out in the region of Santa Catarina, located in the Chalco sub-basin of the Mexico Basin. The objective was to define the stratification at depth with an emphasis on the geometry of the main aquifer of that region which is partially known from DC resistivity soundings and drilling. High-quality magnetotelluric soundings could be recorded in the immediate vicinity of large urban zones because the sub-surface is very conductive. Interpretation shows that the solid bedrock is located at a depth of at least 800 m to the south and 1300 m to the north; it could, however, be much deeper. Using complementary DC resistivity sounding and well-logging data, three main layers have been defined overlying the bedrock. These layers are, from surface to bottom, an unsaturated zone of sand, volcanic ash and clay about 10 m thick, followed by a very conductive (1.5 ohm·m) 200 m thick layer of sand and ash with intercalated clay, saturated with highly mineralized water, and finally a zone with resistivity increasing gradually to 60 ohm·m. The investigated deep aquifer constitutes most of this third layer. It consists of a sequence of sand, gravel, pyroclastites and mainly fractured basalts. MT resistivity soundings and magnetic transfer functions also indicate that a shallow resistive structure is dipping, from the northwest, into the lacustrine deposits of the basin. This geologic feature is likely to be highly permeable fractured basaltic flows, which provide a channel by which water contaminated by the Santa Catarina landfill may leak into the basin. 相似文献

Time-lapse resistivity investigations for imaging saltwater transport in glaciofluvial deposits 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Five intersecting resistivity sections have been measured in glaciofluvial deposits hosting an aquifer of regional importance
situated along a heavy traffic highway in Sweden. The winter salt spreading has caused a regular salinity increase through
the years. For imaging the transport of saltwater in the aquifer, the sections were measured exactly in the same location
before and after winter, and interpreted using a time-lapse inverse procedure. Some auger drilling and RCPT data were available
for correlation. After winter, the resistivity had generally decreased under the water table and increased above it. The decrease
in resistivity in the saturated zone is interpreted as a plume of more saline groundwater created by de-icing salt from the
road. The increase in the upper layer can be explained by changes in temperature and soil moisture. The study shows that time-lapse
resistivity investigations has potential for imaging hydraulic pathways in complex hydrogeological environments. 相似文献

Madagascar is one of the most important gem-producing countries in the world, including ruby and sapphires. Gem corundum deposits formed at different stages in the geological evolution of the island and in contrasting environments. Four main settings are identified: (1) Gem corundum formed in the Precambrian basement within the Neoproterozoic terranes of southern Madagascar, and in the volcano-sedimentary series of Beforona, north of Antananarivo. In the south, high-temperature (700 to 800 °C) and low-pressure (4 to 5 kbar) granulites contain deposits formed during the Pan-African orogenesis between 565 and 490 Ma. They accompany mafic and ultramafic complexes (ruby deposits of the Vohibory group), skarns at the contact between Anosyan granites and the Proterozoic Tranomaro group (sapphire deposits of the Tranomaro–Andranondambo district), and shear-zone corridors cross-cutting feldspathic gneisses, cordieritites and clinopyroxenites in the Tranomaro, Vohimena and Androyan metamorphic series (biotite schist deposits of Sahambano and Zazafotsy, cordieritites of Iankaroka and Ambatomena). The circulation of fluids, especially along discontinuities, allowed in-situ alkaline metasomatism, forming corundum host rocks related to desilicified granites, biotitites, “sakenites” and “corundumites”. (2) Gem corundum also occurs in the Triassic detrital formations of the Isalo group, as giant palaeoplacers in the Ilakaka–Sakaraha area. Here, sapphires and rubies may come from the metamorphic granulitic terranes of southern Madagascar. (3) Gem corundum deposits occur within the Neogene-Quaternary alkali basalts from Ankaratra (Antsirabe–Antanifotsy area) and in the Ambohitra Province (Nosy Be, Ambato and Ambondromifehy districts). Primary deposits are rare, except at Soamiakatra where ruby in gabbroic and clinopyroxenite xenoliths within alkali-basalts probably derive from mantle garnet peridotites. The blue-green-yellow sapphires typical of basaltic fields are always recovered in palaeoplacer (in karst formed upon Jurassic limestones from the Montagne d'Ambre, Antsiranana Province) and alluvial and soil placers (Ankaratra volcanic massif). (4) Deposits occur within Quaternary eluvial, colluvial and alluvial concentrations, such as high-quality rubies from the Andilamena and Vatomandry deposits. 相似文献

The ability of inorganic geochemistry to record environmental change and especially human impact has been evidenced by several studies across Europe, especially in peat, where it is possible to record the impact of agriculture, mining and other industries. However, despite the numerous investigations on the impact of ancient human activities such as ore mining and smelting, little attention has been paid to geochemistry as a tool to solve problems of palaeopollution in the surroundings of archaeological sites. This paper presents geochemical evidence of the impact of a possible early Roman road built in SE Belgian peatland. Increased Zn and Pb concentrations suggest that Pb–Zn ores were transported on the road. Lead isotope analyses suggest that these ores are locally derived, being compatible with those found in the nearby Pb–Zn ore deposits from East Belgium. Present results provide direct evidence that East Belgian Pb–Zn ores were already being mined during Roman times, i.e. earlier than previously suspected (i.e. 14th century) and that Zn appears to be relatively immobile here. On a broader scale, it also demonstrates that such an early road already had an impact on the environment in terms of metal pollution. This paper enlarges on the range of possibilities offered by geochemistry in the field of geoarchaeology. 相似文献

This article explores the websites of the key institutions of the European Union to consider whether these applications of the new information and communication technologies may become a functional equivalent of the national capital city in the emerging supranational political arena. Three functions of capital cities are evaluated: that of command centre, showcase and cultural arena. The websites under consideration do provide a representation of the EU command centre, and they also offer detailed information useful for those monitoring and partaking in the EU decision-making process. They are underused as supranational showcase, with the noticeable exception of their institutionalisation of multilingualism. And they do offer a rudimentary EU-wide public space. The findings suggest that there is a real potential that could be exploited by the EU institutions to foster the expression of the supranational community. 相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic element and its presence in the environment needs to be closely monitored. Recent systematic
surveys in French soils have revealed the existence of areas in eastern and central France, which show systematically high
cadmium concentrations. It has been suggested that at least part of these anomalous levels are of natural origin. For the
Lower Burgundy area in particular, a direct heritage from the Jurassic limestone bedrock is highly suspected. This potential
relationship has been studied in several localities around Avallon and this study reports new evidence for a direct link between
anomalously elevated cadmium contents of Bajocian and Oxfordian limestone and high cadmium concentrations in deriving soils.
Soils in this area show cadmium concentrations generally above the average national population values, with contents frequently
higher than the ‘upper whisker’ value of 0.8 μg g−1 determined by statistical evaluation. In parallel, limestone rocks studied in the same area exhibit cadmium concentrations
frequently exceeding the mean value of 0.030–0.065 μg g−1 previously given for similar rocks by one order of magnitude, with a maximum of 2.6 μg g−1. Mean ratios between the cadmium concentrations of limestone bedrock and deriving soils (Cdsoil/Cdrock), calculated for different areas, range from 4.6 to 5.7. Calculations based on the analyses of both soils from a restricted
area and fragments of bedrock sampled in the immediate vicinity of high-concentration soils are around 5.5–5.7. Cdsoil/Cdrock is useful in determining the potential of soils in Lower Burgundy to reflect and exacerbate the high concentrations of cadmium
present in parent bedrocks. 相似文献

Physical evidence for the drainage of glacial lakes remains relatively rare in depositional records, giving rise to much debate on the location of outlets and discharge pathways, as well as on the climate impact of the attendant meltwater forcing. Lake Ojibway developed following the withdrawal of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in northern Ontario and Quebec, Canada. The late‐stage evolution of this large ice‐dammed lake was influenced by the complex dynamics of the retreating ice margin, which highly complicates the identification of the termination of Lake Ojibway in glaciolacustrine sediment records. Here, we document the composition of sections of rhythmites that contain in their upper part an anomalously thick and whitish bed (10–15 cm) that is in turn overlain by ~1 m of faintly bedded rhythmites. Grain‐size analyses showed that the thick whitish bed consists primarily of fine to coarse silt (2–63 μm), contrasting with the lower and upper rhythmites that are largely dominated by clay (<2 μm). The detrital carbonate content of the thick silt bed is characterized by consistently high values (2.5 to 2.8%), whereas the bounding rhythmites show lower and highly variable values. Oxygen isotope measurements further show a marked change going from typical glacial meltwater values (~ ?29.6 to ?27.7‰; VSMOW) for the lower rhythmites and the silt bed to modern‐like meteoric values (?18.4 to ?14.6‰) for the uppermost rhythmites. These data suggest that this marker bed may be associated with a major drawdown event that possibly corresponds to the final drainage of Lake Ojibway. AMS radiocarbon dating of ostracods extracted from the drainage bed also documents an important hardwater effect within the Ojibway basin. 相似文献
