The Patiho Formation sandstones, which crop out in Aregud neighborhood in Eastern Paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high pro- portion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolu- tion and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipita- tion of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of inter- nal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low tem- perature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source. 相似文献

An intense search is under way to identify the `missing sink' in the world carbon budget of perhaps 2 Pg year–1 (petagrams, or billiontonnes) of carbon, but its location and mechanism have proved elusive. Here we use a new forest inventory data set to estimate the carbon sink and the carbon pool of woody biomass in 55 countries that account for nearly all temperate or boreal forests and approximately half the world's total forest area. In each country there was a net accumulation of biomass; together, the carbon sink of woody biomass was 0.88 Pg year–1 during the 1990swith estimated uncertainty from 0.71 to 1.1 Pg year–1. Thisestimate, already about half of the missing sink, would probably be even larger if carbon accumulation in soil and detritus were also accounted for, but we are unable to quantify that additional sink. The sink is twice that estimated for the woody biomass of these forests a decade ago due to higher estimates for tree growth throughout the region and decreased timber harvests in Russia. In contrast, the new data indicate a carbon pool that is smaller than earlier estimates because of improved data for Russia and Australia. 相似文献

The response of the climate at high northern latitudes to slowly changing external forcings was studied in a 9,000-year long simulation with the coupled atmosphere-sea ice-ocean-vegetation model ECBilt-CLIO-VECODE. Only long-term changes in insolation and atmospheric CO2
and CH4 content were prescribed. The experiment reveals an early optimum (9–8 kyr BP) in most regions, followed by a 1–3°C decrease in mean annual temperatures, a reduction in summer precipitation and an expansion of sea-ice cover. These results are in general agreement with proxy data. Over the continents, the timing of the largest temperature response in summer coincides with the maximum insolation difference, while over the oceans, the maximum response is delayed by a few months due to the thermal inertia of the oceans, placing the strongest cooling in the winter half year. Sea ice is involved in two positive feedbacks (ice-albedo and sea-ice insulation) that lead regionally to an amplification of the thermal response in our model (7°C cooling in Canadian Arctic). In some areas, the tundra-taiga feedback results in intensified cooling during summer, most notably in northern North America. The simulated sea-ice expansion leads in the Nordic Seas to less deep convection and local weakening of the overturning circulation, producing a maximum winter temperature reduction of 7°C. The enhanced interaction between sea ice and deep convection is accompanied by increasing interannual variability, including two marked decadal-scale cooling events. Deep convection intensifies in the Labrador Sea, keeping the overall strength of the thermohaline circulation stable throughout the experiment. 相似文献

Density functional theory calculations have been used to study the pressure-induced changes of the hydrogen bond of Fe-free
orthozoisite and clinozoisite and the concomitant shifts of the OH-stretching frequencies. Two independent parameter-free
lattice dynamical calculations have been employed. One was based on a plane-wave basis set in conjunction with norm-conserving
pseudopotentials and a density functional perturbation theory approach, while the other used a localised basis set and a finite
displacement algorithm for the lattice dynamical calculations. Both models confirm the unusually large pressure-induced red-shift
found experimentally (−33.89 cm−1/GPa) in orthozoisite, while the pressure-induced shifts in clinozoisite are much smaller (−5 to −9 cm−1/GPa). The atomistic model calculations show that in orthozoisite the nearly linear O–H⋯O arrangement is compressed by about
8% on a pressure increase to 10 GPa, while concomitantly the O–H distance is significantly elongated (by 2.5% at 10 GPa).
In clinozoisite, the O–H⋯O arrangement is kinked at ambient conditions and remains kinked at high pressures, while the O-H distance is elongated by only 0.5% at 10 GPa. The
current calculations confirm that correlations between the distances and dynamics of hydrogen bonds, which have been established

Rapid high‐T decompression recorded by Archean granulites in the northern Wyoming Province: Insights from petrological modelling 下载免费PDF全文
This study places new constraints on the pressure–temperature (P–T) path and duration of high‐temperature (HT) metamorphism recorded by Archean granulite facies metasedimentary rocks from the northern Wyoming Province in the eastern Beartooth Mountains, MT and WY, USA. These rocks exist as m‐ to km‐scale xenoliths within a c. 2.8 Ga calc‐alkaline granitoid batholith. Different interpretations of the timing of HT metamorphism relative to batholith intrusion in previous works have led to ambiguity over the mechanism by which these rocks were heated (i.e. batholith intrusion v. a later, cryptic event). The P–T path recorded by these rocks and the duration of this path may be indicative of the heating mechanism but are not currently well constrained. Here, we combine phase equilibria thermobarometry and diffusion modelling of major element zonation in garnet in order to constrain the P–T path of HT metamorphism and the durations of different parts of this path. It is shown that these rocks record a tight, clockwise P–T path characterized by near‐isobaric heating at ~6.5–7 kbar to ?770–800°C, HT decompression to ~6 kbar, 780–800°C, followed by limited decompression while cooling. Diffusion modelling of major element zonation in garnet suggests that HT decompression was brief (likely <1 Ma), and that cooling rates following this decompression were on the order of 10–100°C/Ma. Substantial changes in apparent thermal gradient along this P–T path indicate that the rocks record a significant but short‐lived thermal anomaly that occurred in the Wyoming mid‐crust in the Late Archean. 相似文献

The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a major public health issue across the globe, and it is of particular concern in sub-Saharan Africa. Utilization of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services can significantly impact HIV prevention, transmission, and treatment. SRH service utilization may be determined by individual characteristics, such as education and economic status, but also by the location and accessibility of health care facilities. Using population-based survey data, this study applies exploratory spatial analysis techniques to examine spatial patterns of SRH service utilization among rural married women in southern Mozambique. Clustering among those using services is found as are spatial associations, indicating significant spatial variability in the utilization of health services. The findings provide valuable insights for current and future health care program planning and configuration. 相似文献

Rapid urbanization, intense infra-structure development and increased tourism related activities have resulted in the change of landscape of the Kodaikkanal town and its surrounding, a popular hill town in Tamilnadu, South India. As an after effect, the numbers of landslides and rock-falls have increased steadily in the past decade. Landslide susceptibility analysis is carried out for this area using conditional probability analysis. The geo-spatial database for mapping landslide susceptibility consists of the factors - Relief, Slope, Aspect, Curvature, Weathering, Land use, Topographic Wetness Index and Proximity to road. Two sampling strategies ?C point and seed-cell are compared for landslide susceptibility mapping. The Landslide Susceptibility map developed using conditional probability method is verified using R index for both sampling strategies. The study shows that both the sampling strategies perform with good accuracy, seed cell technique excels slightly over point sampling. 86.11% of the landslides fall in the high and critical susceptible zones. The results show that conditional probability technique provides a simple tool for susceptibility analysis. The method can be used at regional scale and is a valuable input for planning purpose. 相似文献

The Gamma Ray Spectrometer (Mars Odyssey spacecraft) has revealed elemental distributions of potassium (K), thorium (Th), and iron (Fe) on Mars that require fractionation of K (and possibly Th and Fe) consistent with aqueous activity. This includes weathering, evolution of soils, and transport, sorting, and deposition, as well as with the location of first-order geomorphological demarcations identified as possible paleoocean boundaries. The element abundances occur in patterns consistent with weathering in situ and possible presence of relict or exhumed paleosols, deposition of weathered materials (salts and clastic minerals), and weathering/transport under neutral to acidic brines. The abundances are explained by hydrogeology consistent with the possibly overlapping alternatives of paleooceans and/or heterogeneous rock compositions from diverse provenances (e.g., differing igneous compositions). 相似文献

Vulture volcano displays a wide range of mafic to alkaline, carbonate-, and/or CaO-rich volcanic rocks, with subvolcanic and plutonic rocks together with mantle xenoliths in pyroclastic ejecta. The roles of magmatic volatiles such as CO2, S, and Cl have been determined from compositions and trapping temperatures of inclusions in phenocrysts, which include the Na-K-Ca-carbonate nyerereite within melilite. We surmise that this alkali carbonate crystallised from an appropriate carbonatitic melt at relatively high temperature. Carbonatitic metasomatic features are traceable throughout many of the mantle xenoliths, and various carbonatitic components are found in the late stage extrusive suite. There is no evidence that alkali carbonatite developed as a separate magma, but it may have been an important evolutionary stage. We compare the rare occurrence of nyerereite at Vulture with other carbonatites and with an unaltered kimberlite from the Udachnaya pipe. We review the evidence at Vulture for associated carbonatitic metasomatism in the mantle, and we suggest that low viscosity alkali carbonatitic melts may have a primary and much deeper origin than previously considered. 相似文献

We examined the copper isotope ratio of primary high temperature Cu-sulfides, secondary low temperature Cu-sulfides (and Cu-oxides) as well as Fe-oxides in the leach cap, which represent the weathered remains of a spectrum of Cu mineralization, from nine porphyry copper deposits. Copper isotope ratios are reported as δ65Cu‰ = ((65Cu/63Cusample/65Cu/63CuNIST 976 standard) − 1) ? 103. Errors for all the analyses are ± 0.14‰ (determined by multiple analyses of the samples) and mass bias was corrected through standard-sample-standard bracketing. The overall isotopic variability measured in these samples range from − 16.96‰ to 9.98‰. 相似文献
