The role of microbes in geological processes is discussed with particular reference to the geochemical cycle involving iron. Microbial oxidation of Fe(II) minerals can occur via at least three mechanisms, the most important involving acidophilic prokaryotes which promote oxidation of iron sulphides. Accelerated breakdown of arsenopyrite is a good example, where multi-step electrochemical reactions are facilitated by the presence of organisms such as Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Other organisms actively promote the reduction of Fe(III) to more soluble Fe(II). Reduction rates are highly variable, depending on mineral substrate, with oxyhydroxides being most reactive. Proper understanding of such redox processes requires knowledge of interactions at the molecular scale. Advances are being made through genetic studies of relevant organisms, and of mineral surfaces as exemplified by our experimental and computational studies of iron oxides such as magnetite, the reaction of which with simple organic molecules shows diverse behaviour. Mineral-organic interactions precede formation of bacterial biofilms, which can create local geochemical environments causing mineral precipitation. Biofilms and precipitate phases can have a major influence on fluid flow through fractures or porous media as we demonstrate using experiments from micro- to macro-scales.  相似文献

Climate change mitigation via a reduction in the anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principle requirement for reducing global warming, its impacts, and the degree of adaptation required. We present a simple conceptual model of anthropogenic CO2 emissions to highlight the trade off between delay in commencing mitigation, and the strength of mitigation then required to meet specific atmospheric CO2 stabilization targets. We calculate the effects of alternative emission profiles on atmospheric CO2 and global temperature change over a millennial timescale using a simple coupled carbon cycle-climate model. For example, if it takes 50 years to transform the energy sector and the maximum rate at which emissions can be reduced is ?2.5% $\text{year}^{-1}$ , delaying action until 2020 would lead to stabilization at 540 ppm. A further 20 year delay would result in a stabilization level of 730 ppm, and a delay until 2060 would mean stabilising at over 1,000 ppm. If stabilization targets are met through delayed action, combined with strong rates of mitigation, the emissions profiles result in transient peaks of atmospheric CO2 (and potentially temperature) that exceed the stabilization targets. Stabilization at 450 ppm requires maximum mitigation rates of ?3% to ?5% $\text{year}^{-1}$ , and when delay exceeds 2020, transient peaks in excess of 550 ppm occur. Consequently tipping points for certain Earth system components may be transgressed. Avoiding dangerous climate change is more easily achievable if global mitigation action commences as soon as possible. Starting mitigation earlier is also more effective than acting more aggressively once mitigation has begun.  相似文献

The summit region of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, consists of late Silurian to Early Devonian age volcanic rocks originally interpreted as a thick sequence (> 600 m) of andesite lavas and agglomerates that were down‐faulted during caldera subsidence. New digital field mapping of the Ben Nevis area, including both the steep north and south faces of the mountain, has revealed that the volcanic rocks consist largely of volcaniclastic debris flows, and extensive block and ash flow deposits with minor air‐fall tuff units. There is no evidence of any andesite lava flows or a volcanic vent. The volcanic detritus was derived from a volcanic centre situated to the NW of Ben Nevis, perhaps several tens of kilometres away. The rocks forming the summit region of the mountain have been re‐interpreted as a large roof pendant or keel of the former late Silurian to Early Devonian volcanic land surface that once covered much of the SW Highlands of Scotland.  相似文献

This paper advances the theoretical argument for moving beyond the conventional/alternative divide in the analysis of emerging ‘alternative’ agri-food networks (AAFNs). In order to understand how ‘place’, ‘nature’ and ‘quality’-based food networks emerge and develop, we argue that careful attention needs to be paid to the way in which specific political-economic environments shape the options available to farmers and consumers. Australia's ‘competitive productivism’ is the outcome of an export-oriented economy and a neoliberal political orientation, and this environment affects the development of AAFNs in various ways. Most notably, a case study of farmers that sell at farmers' markets in the State of Victoria shows that the competitive-productivist policies pursued by Australian governments entice some farmers who participate in AAFNs to develop their ideas into higher output businesses tailored to compete in emerging export markets. Other farmers deliberately choose to keep marketing through alternative channels despite competitive-productivist pressures to expand. These findings demonstrate the centrality to the experience of AAFN participants of negotiating productivist pressures, adding nuances to the story of the complex relations between AAFNs and conventional supply chains.  相似文献

Abstract

Landscape stewardship is considered an important place-based approach to addressing sustainability challenges. Working at landscape-level requires collaboration between diverse landscape stakeholders. In this study, we partnered with local stewardship practitioners across six cases in South Africa to investigate how they facilitate collaboration towards social-ecological sustainability outcomes. We found that practitioners facilitate collaboration among stakeholders by operating as relational hubs in the landscape. Through these hubs, they build new inter-personal relationships among stakeholders, creating social networks which enable stewardship practice. The hubs deepen human-nature relationships by creating enabling conditions for stewards to put stewardship ethics into action. Drawing on insights from these cases, we call for a relational approach to landscape stewardship which focuses on human-to-human and human-to-nature relationships. Moreover, we argue that landscape stewardship initiatives need to re-focus stewardship on stewards, recognizing them as key agents of change in addressing the conflict between agriculture and conservation inherent in many landscapes.  相似文献

Understanding past climate change is critical to the interpretation of earth history. Even though relative temperature change has been readily assessed in the marine record, it has been more difficult in the terrestrial record due to restricted taxonomic distribution and isotopic fractionation. This problem could be overcome by the use of multiple paleoproxies. Therefore, the δ18O isotopic composition of five paleoproxies (rodent tooth enamel, δ18OPhosphate = +17.7 ± 2.0‰ n = 74 (VSMOW); fish scale ganoine δ18OPhosphate = +19.7 ± 0.7‰ n = 20 (VSMOW); gastropod shell δ18OCalcite = −1.7 ± 1.3‰ n = 50 (VPDB); charophyte gyrogonite δ18OCalcite = −2.4 ± 0.5‰ n = 20 (VPDB); fish otolith δ18OAragonite = δ18O = −3.6 ± 0.6‰ n = 20 (VPDB)) from the Late Eocene (Priabonian) Osborne Member (Headon Hill Formation, Solent Group, Hampshire Basin, UK) were determined. Because diagenetic alteration was shown to be minimal the phosphate oxygen component of rodent tooth enamel (as opposed to enamel carbonate oxygen) was used to calculate an initial δ18OLocal water value of 0.0 ± 3.4‰. However, a skewed distribution, most likely as a result of the ingestion of evaporating water, necessitated the calculation of a corrected δ18OLocal water value of −1.3 ± 1.7‰ (n = 62). This δ18OLocal water value corresponds to an approximate mean annual temperature of 18 ± 1°C. Four other mean paleotemperatures can also be calculated by combining the δ18OLocal water value with four independent freshwater paleoproxies. The calculated paleotemperature using the fish scale thermometry equations most likely represents the mean temperature (21 ± 2°C) of the entire length of the growing season. This should be concordant with the paleotemperature calculated using the Lymnaea shell thermometry equation (23 ± 2°C). The lack of concordance is interpreted to be the result of diagenetic alteration of the originally aragonitic Lymnaea shell to calcite. The mean paleotemperature calculated using the charophyte gyrogonite thermometry equation (21 ± 2°C), on the other hand, most likely represents the mean temperature of a single month toward the end of the growing season. The fish otolith mean paleotemperature (28 ± 2°C) most likely represents the mean temperature of the warmest months of the growing season. An approximate mean annual temperature of 18 ± 1°C, in addition to a mean growing season paleotemperature of 21 ± 2°C (using fish scale only) with a warmest month temperature of 28 ± 2°C, and high associated standard deviations suggest that a subtropical to warm temperate seasonal climate existed during the deposition of the Late Eocene Osborne Member.  相似文献

Rapid deposition of mud on the beach along the shoreface of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil dramatically influences the normal operations in the littoral zone. In the surf zone, fluid and suspended mud opposes water-wave movement and dissipates water-wave energy; on the beach, mud limits trafficability. As part of a multinational, multidisciplinary program to evaluate the influence of mud strength, density and viscosity on water-wave attenuation, sediments were evaluated in situ or collected for evaluation from an area offshore of Cassino Beach, slightly south of the Patos Lagoon mouth. Shear strength of deposited sediments ranged from 0.6 kPa at the seafloor to 3.4 kPa at ∼1 m below the seafloor. Mud sediments were also collected to simulate the in situ response of fluid mud to shear stresses. For this determination, rheological evaluations were made using a strain-controlled Couette viscometer on numerous remixed samples that ranged in density from 1.05 to 1.30 g/cm3. It was determined that this mud is a non-ideal Bingham material in that it has a true initial yield stress as well as a upper Bingham yield stress. Initial yield stress ranged from 0.59 to 2.62 Pa, upper Bingham yield stress ranged from 1.05 to 7.6 Pa. Apparent viscosity ranged from 0.02 to 4.7 Pa s with the highest viscosities occurring between the two yield stresses. Sediment strength in the remixed samples is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower than the horizontal shear strength of the sediment bed as determined by shear vane or predicted from penetrometer measurements. This difference is partially due to the fact that rheological evaluations are made on fully remixed sediments, whereas horizontal shear strength is determined within relatively undisturbed sediments. Similar values of viscosity and shear strength are comparable to those determined for mud in other coastal areas where fluid mud deposits occur.  相似文献

The food consumption (recorded in kg of individual fish species), body length and mass of 11 Atlantic bottlenose dolphins kept first at Windsor Safari Park, UK (1979-1993/1994), and later at Harderwijk Marine Mammal Park, The Netherlands (1993/1994-1995) are reported. This broad-scale, longitudinal study is based on historical data that were originally recorded for short-term husbandry purposes. The chemical composition and caloric value of the diet were variable and were not recorded. The food intake quantities should therefore be viewed as rough weight estimates of what wild conspecifics might eat (depending on their diet). The average annual food consumption of adult males and non-pregnant, non-lactating females was approximately 2000 kg of fish (estimated at 176 x 10(5) kJ). Food consumption showed little increase during gestation, but was 58-97% higher during lactation than during similar periods in non-reproductive years. All six calves began to eat solid food within a year of birth although suckling continued for 14-37 months after birth. The pattern of food intake of mothers and calves varied substantially between suckling periods. No seasonal changes in food consumption were detected, although there were small seasonal changes in water temperature. Births occurred at various times of year, since the timing of mating varied between years. The animals' body length increased rapidly during the first 3 years of life after which the growth rate decreased. Body length reached asymptote at approximately 270 cm. Adults of both sexes weighed around 260 kg. The relationship between standard body length (in cm) and body mass (in kg), although based on a small sample size (n = 16), can be expressed as body mass = 17.261e(0.0156(body length-100)). Animals weighing 155-225 kg consumed between 2 and 4% of their body mass per day.  相似文献
