This paper describes a pilot study into the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting and the derivation of physical parameters for 19 galaxies observed as part of the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) survey as observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. For this we have used the pan-spectral fitting tools developed in a series of papers by Dopita and his co-workers. We show that the standard Lee and Draine ??astronomical silicate?? model cannot provide a good fit to the silicate absorption features as observed in the heavily dust-extinguished (A V??50 mag.) starbursts. We have derived an empirical fit to the ??starburst silicate?? absorption in these objects. This absorption curve is consistent with the silicate grains being systematically larger in starburst environments than in the local Galactic interstellar medium. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the SED fitting to each of the fitted parameters, and derive these parameters for those galaxies which do not have an embedded AGN. This technique is simple and provides reasonably robust and uniform parameters for the starburst, especially as far as the star formation rate, population of old stars, compactness of the starburst region and total foreground extinction are concerned. However, the chemical abundances and the optical extinction cannot be reliably determined by this analysis, and optical SEDs will also be required to provide a complete characterization of the starburst region and of the surrounding galaxy. 相似文献

The ground improvement technique of stone columns has been effectively used over the last decades in order to accelerate the consolidation rate of soft soils by providing a drainage path, reduce foundation settlements, improve the bearing capacity of the soil, and limit the risk of liquefaction due to seismic activity. Because of the time consumption of a three dimensional (3D) calculation, most stone column projects are presently studied by axisymmetric finite element computations. Otherwise, it is the analytical method of Priebe that is commonly used to predict the final settlements of a single stone column and the corresponding settlement reduction factor. Both methods, axisymmetric finite element analysis and Priebe’s analytical method make use of the axisymmetric theory of unit cell. The main objective of this study is to examine and compare the three dimensional response of stone column reinforced soils with the axisymmetric analysis results. A proposed analytical method, governed by the failure mechanism of a cylindrical cone is also presented. The comparison between these different approaches is studied and evaluated in conjunction with in situ measurements. It is proved that the beneficial effect of this ground improvement technique, especially on the foundation soil with the lower strength characteristics, is more pronounced. Also, it is concluded that due to unit cell theory, the settlement reduction factor is usually under predicted and the failure of the composite system is impossible, even under high applied pressures. The proposed analytical method of the cylindrical cone failure mechanism is proved to be in good agreement with the 3D results. 相似文献

ABSTRACTEvaporation is one of the most important components in the energy and water budgets of lakes and is a primary process of water loss from their surfaces. An artificial neural network (ANN) technique is used in this study to estimate daily evaporation from Lake Vegoritis in northern Greece and is compared with the classical empirical methods of Penman, Priestley-Taylor and the mass transfer method. Estimation of the evaporation over the lake is based on the energy budget method in combination with a mathematical model of water temperature distribution in the lake. Daily datasets of air temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, sunshine hours and evaporation are used for training and testing of ANN models. Several input combinations and different ANN architectures are tested to detect the most suitable model for predicting lake evaporation. The best structure obtained for the ANN evaporation model is 4-4-1, with root mean square error (RMSE) from 0.69 to 1.35 mm d?1 and correlation coefficient from 0.79 to 0.92.

The spatial distribution of the stress field around a fault, before its failure, depends on the focal mechanism of the ensuing
rupture. In the preseismic stage, the main fault is locked and background seismicity is distributed in the surrounding area
along small faults due to the raise of the stress level. This distribution is well correlated with changes of the stress field,
when these are calculated considering the fault slipping on the opposite sense (back-slip model), before the incoming strong
event. Studies of the seismicity around faults with known geometry, dimensions and slip properties could contribute in the
seismic hazard assessment.
In the present work, the spatio-temporal distribution of the smaller magnitude seismic activity before the occurrence of the
four most recent (1995–2008) strong (M ≥ 6.4) shallow earthquakes in Greece is compared with the stress pattern necessary for the generation of the strong earthquakes.
Studying the annual rate of occurrence it is found that in areas of positive pre-stress changes a sharp increase of the number
of earthquakes is observed several years before the occurrence of the main shock. This increase lasts for a few years and
then for several years before the main shock the occurrence rate declines but usually remains higher than it was before the
sharp increase. Seismicity distribution in the respective areas of negative pre-stress changes shows a rather stable occurrence
rate. 相似文献

The implications of the earthquakes that took place in the central Ionian Islands in 2014 (Cephalonia, M w6.1, M w5.9) and 2015 (Lefkas, M w6.4) are described based on repeat measurements of the local GPS networks in Cephalonia and Ithaca, and the available continuous GPS stations in the broader area. The Lefkas earthquake occurred on a branch of the Cephalonia Transform Fault, affecting Cephalonia with SE displacements gradually decreasing from north (~100 mm) to south (~10 mm). This earthquake revealed a near N–S dislocation boundary separating Paliki Peninsula in western Cephalonia from the rest of the island, as well as another NW–SE trending fault that separates kinematically the northern and southern parts of Paliki. Strain field calculations during the interseismic period (2014–2015) indicate compression between Ithaca and Cephalonia, while extension appears during the following co-seismic period (2015–2016) including the 2015 Lefkas earthquake. Additional tectonically active zones with differential kinematic characteristics were also identified locally. 相似文献

A multiplet of moderate-magnitude earthquakes (5.1?≤?M?≤?5.6) took place in Zakynthos Island and offshore area (central Ionian Islands, Greece) in April 2006. The activity in the first month occupied an area of almost 35 km long, striking roughly NNW–SSE, whereas aftershocks continued for several months, decaying with time but persisting at the same place. The properties of the activated structure were investigated with accurate relocated data and the available fault plane solutions of some of the stronger events. Both the distribution of seismicity and fault plane solutions show that thrusting with strike-slip motions are both present in high-angle fault segments. The segmentation of the activated structure could be attributed to the faulting complexity inherited from the regional compressive tectonics. Investigation of the spatial and temporal behavior of seismicity revealed possible triggering of adjacent fault segments that may fail individually, thus preventing coalescence in a large main rupture. In an attempt to forecast occurrence probabilities of six of the strong events (M w?≥?5.0), estimations were performed following the restricted epidemic-type aftershock sequence model, applied to data samples before each one of these strong events. Stochastic modeling was also used to identify “quiescence” periods before the examined aftershocks. In two out of the six cases, real aftershock rate did decrease before the next strong shock compared to the modeled one. The latter results reveal that rate decrease is not a clear precursor of strong shocks in the swarm and no quantitative information, suitable to supply probability gain, could be extracted from the data. 相似文献
