Trophic State Index (TSI) of Nainital lake has been determined using secchi disk transparency as well as using Landsat 7 ETM bands. The insitu water quality parameters like pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) have been measured using multiparameter water quality instrument TROLL 9500. Various interpolation techniques have been tested and the best one has been applied to prepare the water quality images of Nainital lake. The analysis of Landsat images have shown that the lake water is in eutrophic condition from the year 2000 to 2010. However, the trophic state index values are found to be relatively less during the year 2006 to 2008. This may be due to the lake restoration programmes undertaken by the Lake Development Authorities.  相似文献

A total of 240 water-borne bacteria including 72 Escherichia coli, 83 Enterobacter, 30 Klebsiella, 36 Salmonella and 19 Shigella spp. isolates from drinking and recreational water sources were assessed for antibiotic resistance and genetic diversity. Escherichia coli (88.89 %) and species of Enterobacter (86.75 %), Klebsiella (83.33 %) and Salmonella (100 %) were resistant to cefadroxil, while >94 % Shigella spp. were resistant to cefaclor and cefuroxime. Ofloxacin was the most effective antibiotic against isolates of all the genera. Multiple antibiotic resistance index identified dug well, pond and piped water supplies as high risk sources of enteric pathogens. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis and restriction fragment length polymorphism of amplified 16S rRNA gene were studied for genetic relatedness of Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Primer P1254 identified 10, 16, 4, 4 and 1 distinct random amplified polymorphic DNA group(s) of E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella species, respectively. Unlike random amplified polymorphic DNA, restriction fragment length polymorphism using AluI and HaeIII could not segregate isolates in different genetic profiles. 16S rRNA gene of three Enterobacter spp. strains from different sources with similar restriction fragment length polymorphism but different random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns was sequenced, and identified as Enterobacter hormaechei strains skg0061, 0062 and 0063. The sequence information has been submitted to GenBank (HQ322393-95). Biochemically similar but genetically diverse Enterobacteriaceae members from drinking and recreational water sources exhibited varying antibiotic sensitivity. Contamination of water sources with such multiple antibiotic-resistant enteric pathogens poses threat to human health.  相似文献

Addressing the challenges of global warming requires interventions on both the energy supply and demand side. With the supply side responses being thoroughly discussed in the literature, our paper focuses on analyzing the role of end use efficiency improvements for Indian climate change mitigation policy and the associated co-benefits, within the integrated assessment modeling framework of Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM). Six scenarios are analyzed here in total- one no climate policy and two climate policy cases, and within each of these one scenario with reference end use energy technology assumptions and another with advance end use energy technology assumptions has been analyzed. The paper has some important insights. Final energy demand and emissions in India are significantly reduced with energy efficiency improvements, and the role of this policy is important especially for the building and transportation sector under both reference and climate policy scenarios. Though energy efficiency policy should be an integral part of climate policy, by itself it is not sufficient for achieving mitigation targets, and a climate policy is necessary for achieving mitigation goals. There are significant co-benefits of energy efficiency improvements. Energy security for India is improved with reduced oil, coal and gas imports. Significant reduction in local pollutant gases is found which is important for local health concerns. Capital investment requirement for Indian electricity generation is reduced, more so for the climate policy scenarios, and finally there are significant savings in terms of reduced abatement cost for meeting climate change mitigation goals.  相似文献

Abstract

A comparison study is presented of three methods for evaluating trends in drought frequency: the standardized precipitation index (SPI), the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), and a new method for estimation of dry spells (DS), which is based on average daily temperature and precipitation, and takes into account the length of a spell. The methods were applied to climate data from 450 stations in the Elbe River basin for the period 1951–2003, as well as data from several stations with longer observed time series. Statistical methods were used to calculate trend lines and evaluate the significance of detected trends. The dry spells estimated with the new method show significant trends in the whole lowland part of the Elbe basin during the last 53 years, and at the 10% level almost everywhere in the German part of the basin excluding mountains and the area around the river mouth. The SPI and PDSI methods also revealed significant trends, but for smaller areas in the lowland. The new DS method provides a useful supplement to other drought indices for the detection of trends in drought frequency. Furthermore, the DS method was able to detect statistically significant trends in areas where the other two methods failed to find significant trends, e.g. in the loess region in the southwest of the German part of the basin, where small insignificant changes in climate can lead to significant changes in water fluxes. This is important, because the loess region is the area within the basin having the highest crop yields. Therefore, additional research has to be done to investigate possible impacts of detected trends on water resources availability, and possible future trends in drought frequency under climate change.  相似文献

Agricultural water management (AWM) is the adaptation strategy for increasing agricultural production through enhancing water resources availability while maintaining ecosystem services. This study characterizes groundwater hydrology in the Kothapally agricultural watershed, in hard rock Deccan plateau area in India and assesses the impact of AWM interventions on groundwater recharge using a calibrated and validated hydrological model, SWAT, in combination with observed water table data in 62 geo‐referenced open wells. Kothapally receives, on average, 750 mm rainfall (nearly 90% of annual rainfall) during the monsoon season (June to October). Water balance showed that 72% of total rainfall was converted as evapotranspiration (ET), 16% was stored in aquifer, and 8% exported as runoff from the watershed boundary with AWM interventions. Nearly 60% of the runoff harvested by AWM interventions recharged shallow aquifers and rest of the 40% increased ET. Water harvesting structures (WHS) contributed 2.5 m additional head in open wells, whereas hydraulic head under natural condition was 3.5 m, resulting in total 6 m rise in water table during the monsoon. At the field scale, WHSs recharged open wells at a 200 to 400 m spatial scale.  相似文献

Snowmelt is an important component of any snow-fed river system.The Jhelum River is one such transnational mountain river flowing through India and Pakistan.The basin is minimally glacierized and its discharge is largely governed by seasonal snow cover and snowmelt.Therefore,accurate estimation of seasonal snow cover dynamics and snowmeltinduced runoff is important for sustainable water resource management in the region.The present study looks into spatio-temporal variations of snow cover for past decade and stream flow simulation in the Jhelum River basin.Snow cover extent(SCE) was estimated using MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) sensor imageries.Normalized Difference Snow Index(NDSI) algorithm was used to generate multi-temporal time series snow cover maps.The results indicate large variation in snow cover distribution pattern and decreasing trend in different sub-basins of the Jhelum River.The relationship between SCE-temperature,SCE-discharge and discharge-precipitation was analyzed for different seasons and shows strong correlation.For streamflow simulation of the entire Jhelum basin Snow melt Runoff Model(SRM) used.A good correlation was observed between simulated stream flow and in-situ discharge.The monthly discharge contribution from different sub-basins to the total discharge of the Jhelum River was estimated using a modified version of runoff model based on temperature-index approach developed for small watersheds.Stream power - an indicator of the erosive capability of streams was also calculated for different sub-basins.  相似文献

Water infiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity in vegetated soil are two vital hydrological parameters for agriculturists to determine availability of soil moisture for assessing crop growths and yields, and also for engineers to carry out stability calculations of vegetated slopes. However, any effects of roots on these two parameters are not well‐understood. This study aims to quantify the effects of a grass species, Cynodon dactylon, and a tree species, Schefflera heptaphylla, on infiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity in relation to their root characteristics and suction responses. The two selected species are commonly used for ecological restoration and rehabilitation in many parts of the world and South China, respectively. A series of in‐situ double‐ring infiltration tests was conducted during a wet summer, while the responses of soil suction were monitored by tensiometers. When compared to bare soil, the vegetated soil has lower infiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity. This results in at least 50% higher suction retained in the vegetated soil. It is revealed that the effects of root‐water uptake by the selected species on suction were insignificant because of the small evapotranspiration (<0.2 mm) when the tests were conducted under the wet climate. There appears to have no significant difference (less than 10%) of infiltration rates, hydraulic conductivity and suction retained between the grass‐covered and the tree‐covered soil. Hyperion is a space borne sensor which provides powerful tool in discriminating land cover features including urban area and in preparation of urban maps. It gives hyperspectral images in 242 bands within 400?nm to 2,500?nm wavelength range with 10?nm band-width. The Hyperion image in raw form is badly affected with several atmospheric effects which cause haziness. In this study hyperspectral image is atmospherically corrected by using FLAASH model of ENVI. After atmospheric correction the urban area was mapped using the spectral endmember collected by the procedure which includes minimum noise fraction (MNF), pixel purity index (PPI) and n-dimensional visualization in ENVI software. The aim of this study is to map the urban area using several mapping techniques such as Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), Mixture Tune Matched Filtering (MTMF) and Linear Spectral Unmixing. The urban land covers displayed noticeable differences from one another in the spectral responses in the Hyperion image. The overall accuracy of the SAM classified map was 89.41%, which indicated good potential of Hyperion image for Classification. Use of the other approaches, linear spectral unmixing and MTMF have improved the classification results.  相似文献

To utilize the full potential of multispectral data acquired from aerial photographs/satellite imagery increased knowledge of the spectral reflectance characteristics of Landuse/Landcover features are required. Spectro-Radiometer was used to collect the spectral reflectance values in wavelength regions ranging from 0.48 to 0.96 u m, of some Landuse/Landcover features, in Roorkee and its surrounding areas. Spectral reflectance values, thus collected, were used to draw spectral reflectance curves of each feature separately and to determine the optimum wavelength regions for identifying each Landuse/Landcover feature. The wavelength regions, in which two dissimilar Landuse/Landcover features exhibit nearly same tonal variation in B&W aerial photographs/satellite imagery, were also determined from these curves.  相似文献

Concepts from the Theory of Interacting Continua are employed to develop constitutive relations for thermoelastic fluid-saturated porous media; these constitutive relations are shown to be equivalent to those of Biot in isothermal limit. For uniaxial compaction, the constitutive theory is simplified to give formation compaction as a function of changes in fluid pressure and temperature. The formation compaction due to thermal cooling is equal to 3hη[(1 + v)/3(1 − v)]ΔT.  相似文献
